Sports Illustrated On Campus has a pretty good article on Bowling Green's goalie, and current Hobey Baker candidate, Jordan Sigalet. It describes his once secret battle with MS while still playing hockey: [sportsillustrated.cnn.com]

The guys who won't take part in hobey stuff must have a real problem with the sympathy vote Jordan Sigalet (and his brother?) is getting. Is he the best college hockey player with MS? As far as we know, probably. Is he the best college hockey player?

Vote McKee! :-D

"Award criteria include strength of character on and off the ice, along with scholastic achievement and sportsmanship. Naturally, the player must contribute to the integrity of his team while displaying outstanding skills in all facets of the game. These qualities epitomize what the award's namesake was all about."

So, yeah, if it isn't a huge reach and the committee has the chance to generate lots of good publicity for college hockey, they likely will. That in itself is not enough to make a Sigalet a winner, but this year there are probably only two Hobey Hat Trick slots up for grabs.

I know what you're saying...but how about this quote from Jordan:

"That's great to hear," Sigalet says. "All I ever wanted is to be treated like a hockey player."

But by him saying that, it only increases his case, right? nut

No problem at all with the sympathy vote the guy is getting now, in the fan voting. The fan voting is arbitrary and (fortunately) has very littel to do with who eventually wins. Now, if Sigalet were to win the Hobey purely out of sympathy then I'd be somewhat annoyed.

[q]outstanding skills in all facets of the game[/q]

Not to be a curmudgeon, but the guy isn't in the top twenty goalies for the season. I'm impressed with his perseverance, but he doesn't belong at or near the top of a list of candidates for this particular award.

The kid should get an award from BG at the end of the season and a hearty ovation from any hockey fan that sees him play. But the Hobey? No.

Just out of curiousity, but is it possible to refuse to accept the award (or remove yourself from the running)?
