USCHO's Dave Hendrickson waxes comedic on Sucks's team nickname:

"Rotting Corpses" would even offer some interesting twists. A reporter could write, "the Harvard Rotting Corpses came to life last night, rallying from a three-goal deficit to defeat Cornell, 5-4."
I'm not sure which is less likely. Harvard changing their name to 'Rotting Corpses', or someone overcoming a 3 goal Cornell advantage ;)

Okay, its just a joke, to the woofing gods and everyone else, but it had to be made :)

harvard should be familiar with that score though...

Maine 5 Harvard 4 with a three goal lead blown

Fixed the headline. :-)

While the article only mentions the 3 color-nicknamed schools that happen to have Division-I hockey programs, it's nice trivia to list all of them:

Cornell Big Red
Dartmouth Big Green
Harvard Crimson
North Texas Mean Green (men only)
Stanford Cardinal
Syracuse Orange (with the recent name change)

If anyone can point out one that I missed, or don't know about, feel free to post it.

Well, the Alabama Crimson Tide isn't a purely color-nicknamed team like those, but it does suffer from the same "collective singular" problem Dave spends half his column on.

Same story with the Tulane Green Wave. Also, there are a couple DIII schools with plural color nicknames - NYU Violets (although that could be the flower, not the color), and the University of Chicago Maroons.

This is what's called a rainy day column (or story): You always keep one or two silly column ideas on tap in case you suffer writer's block and need something in a hurry. (Ask me how I know.) Sometimes those turn out to be your best columns. Other times ...

There's nothing wrong with a singular team nickname other than it forces challenged scribes to remember to say "is" not "are." Coaches (who might have the same problem the writers do in matching subject and verb) love that "There is no 'I' in 'team'" nonsense and could appreciate it.

I think Big Red is kind of cool. "Big Reds" sounds like a left-leaning grad school intramural team.

Our English forebears, who know a lot about journalism, or at least about what people want to read (Page 3 Girls) simply make everything plural. Thus, "Manchester United were in a spot of trouble until local boy Theo Hamonides lifted them with an 88th minute goal ... "

How did Dave Hendrickson manage to write a column without mentioning the Red Sox? B-]

Bah. Who needs 'em when you've got the Go Red girls... or in the case of Placid '00, the CU girls...

I'm not sure what the school's official stance was, but on the club hockey team, we (grad students were eligible) considered it the flower and our tongue-in-cheek battle cry was "NYU Violets! We don't wilt!"

I figured this thread was going to be about Harvard doing the ECAC proud, yet again, in the Beanpot.
