Well, it's silly for me to go to DC to see the Devils. Maybe I'll try to get tix to see them in NJ before the season's over, though it's not like I'm a huge font of free time right now...

I'd go see the Devils, especially if they're playing the Isles! Although, I haven't seen the Nieuwendyk trade anywhere. Anyone have a link?

There should be a law against that much sucking at one place at one time. I hope Nieuwy isn't consumed by it. ;-)

Ack! Now how am I supposed to root for him?

Welcome to my world. IMO, any team that abandoned a rabid hockey base to go to the desert, Dixie, or anywhere else where the word "puck" isn't in the local vernacular (Coyotes, Stars, Whore-icanes) is evil. And in general, I hate all teams south of St. Louis. And while I've got the soapbox all dusted off, let me say that Gary Bettman's regime has completely stripped me of any passion that I once had for the NHL.

So take it from me, it's possible to root for a specific player, but hate a team. I've been doing it for 7 years now...

No, I'd just like to forget Bettman as a fellow alumnus. I'd be interested to know how often he actually attended hockey games as a student.

I haven't had any problem rooting for the Stars with Joe. New Jersey will test me -- it would be hard to overestimate my loathing of the Devils and NJ in general. I suppose it could be worse. (Thinks about it.) Yes, if Joe were traded to a Florida or California team it would be worse.

On the upside, the Devils truly suck right now, and Joe could be a savior. Hopefully he will play out his contract and then bring it home one last time with a real team.

Random good thoughts: (anything is better than studying toxicology)

1) Joe on Jersey does make it easier to have my home jersey signed by another alum in the pros (already have Dryden's, but being in carribean limits my live hockey exposure)

2) Since i do have to study, i leave this in the more than capable hands of the eLF, is Doug Stienstra still in the Jersey farm system? If so, two alums on same team at same time possibility arises.

3) Cornell hockey alums in the news right before NCAA's = good omen. just a feeling.

4) on another thread for NCAA tix there is talk of UNH fans SELLING the FF tix on ebay and uscho NOW, its yet another good omen

5) I will be back in the states for next season (well half of it)

LET"S GO RED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doug Stienstra is playing in England with the Bracknell Bees. He'd been Ryan Moynihan's teammate for part of the year, before Moynihan's contract was sold to another team, so if you don't just mean NHL, there already were two alums on the same team. A quick glance at names shows PC Drouin to be playing in the same league.

In these days of rapidly changing rosters, it's hard to have any loyalty to organIzations. Plus, I've always admired Lou Lamorello (sp?) and the job he's done with the Devils - like I never understood why other teams didn't draft Brian Gionta before the Devils got a steal in the 3rd round. So Good Luck Joe and Let's Go Devils. There's an article on the trade at:

Two things:

1. As a Sharks fan, having Neiwendyk not play for the hated Stars is a good thing.

2. Brad Chartrand plays for the LA Kings nowdays. I just realized this as I was watching the Kings/Sharks game last night.

While this is a personal disruption for Joe and family, my sense is the Stars are headed into a ditch like a porky SUV on a slippery road. I find the following quote from the AP article in today's Ithaca Journal to be curious:

"He [Arnott] was the key for us,'' Stars general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He brings us some size, some strength and a different attitude at center ice.'

No clear idea other than this. Arnott is a more physical player than Joe N...at times he's downright nasty so maybe they were looking for his physical presence.

He also had a rather contentius contract squabble with Lamoriello a year or two ago resulting in his holding out.

Joe N will no doubt adjust easily to his new teammates, consumate pro that he is.

I'm so tired of hearing how the Devils and NJ suck suck suck. No one who has never lived in NJ can say it sucks. It's really not that bad. Nor are the Devils. They have been in the Stanley Cup finals the last two years, winning twice in the last 6 years. Congrats to Joe, and to the Devils, and best of luck to both. I'm personally a huge Devils fan and am sad to see Arnott go, but hey, at least they both wear the same number. (I think...)

Nothing wrong with being a "notorious Slu booster".

I should clarify. When I said "nasty" I mean in the hockey sense. I think of Joe N. more as a skilled, finesse player. Not to say he shies away from the physical aspect, but relatively speaking, Arnott is more of a banger and a stronger physical player. He's very tough to move in front and on the boards.

I have seen him get downright "nasty"...engaging in some stickwork...in a few heated Rangers/Devils games the past few years.

Can't speak for everyone here, Rich, but that's exactly the way I took your earlier comment.

Joe's been known to do some pretty heavy damage "in front"--with damage meaning scoring, not carving. His box lacrosse background gives him excellent stick skills for tipping/deflecting pucks.
