Cornell, Maine and Ohio State as regulars plus a fourth. Or maybe BC and OSU will alternate, but I think they said last year that OSU was only taking a one-year-absence.

Cornell returns to full strength.

OSU took the year off to host its own tournament because it's an NCAA host coming up and the NCAA wants you to do a small tournament before the big one. Don't know where, but I recall hearing also that Cornell, Maine, and (The) OSU are near-perpetual particpants and you bring in one other team on a yearly basis. (The) OSU also has a big fan base in Florida, in part because it's a big school, in part because (I believe) a disproportionate number of Ohioans who've struck in semi-rich buy a condo somewhere on the West Coast of Florida if they don't stop at the Destin area along the panhandle.

Maine calls a timeout...Maine was sitting a player today because of three penalties against SCSU. Time to start doing that for Cornell?

Coach knows best.

So if Cornell kills off all but one of nine or ten power plays, we're looking really good in the stats department. But in the meantime it's nail-biting time. Tempting fate too many times.

As we wind down to 3:00 left in the game and the Big Red up 4-3 despite what 11 penalties against Cornell, some dry humor from the announcers as McKee signals icing against Maine but no call: "This is just an educated opinion ... but Shafer is probably not too happy with that [non-icing on Maine] call."

Cornell vs. Maine: happy? unhappy with outcome?
Posted by: billhoward (---.union01.nj.comcast.net)
Date: December 29, 2004 06:19PM

4-3 win for Cornell over #15 Maine. So are we happy ...

- killed 10 of 11 penalties
- 3 power play goals in 4 tries
- beat one of two top fifteen teams
- came back from a heartbraking loss
- finally won a game away from Lynah in 2004-05

... or unhappy
- can manage only one even-strength goal in the consolation
- could've beaten two top fifteen teams
- called for 22, 23, something like that penalties in two games
- didn't make the final against a team (BC) we coulda, maybe shoulda beaten
- failed to get the added TV exposure the final would have brought

So let's say we're ... not unhappy with the tournament?

I'm happy. They played great, got a PWR-significant NC win, gained experience against two good teams, and proved they could win on the road. A big confidence-builder to end the NC schedule. Now they can concentrate on trying to win the conference.

Unhappy with the loss, but very happy with the win today. Good to hear the team score 4 goals against a quality opponent. Since we were 3 for 4 on the PP today, I think last night's result can partly be attributed to the long layoff, and part to facing a top ten team. For those who saw both games, was the Red a lot crisper with the passing and better on the breakout today?

No. I actually thought they played a little better yesterday. Cornell outplayed BC for the most part but had to face a really talented team on two 2-man advantages and that was the difference.
In general, it's tough to judge how well they played because there was so little 5-on-5, but I was pretty happy with both games.

Wasn't our power play a lot better today? It must have been unless BC has a significantly better penalty kill than Maine, who is generally a very good defensive team.

Powerplay was the best today that it has been all season. The inclusion of Cook on the point really seemed to get them going, which is sort of surprising considering Cook has played poorly the last few games. But they moved the puck extremely well and effectively used the one-time option to Cook (led to two of the goals).
This powerplay yesterday and Cornell would have won.
Hopefully the coaching staff leaves the first unit alone now that they have had success and doesn't change it if they have a bad game like they did early in the season.

BC beats St. Cloud in 2ot to win the Harkness Trophy. Short of a Cornell tourny win (obviously), I think we got the best possible permutation of results from the four games -- a head-to-head win against a mutual potential PWR bubble team, and a max-out of the opponents' SOS.

Just got back from the game this morning. Got held up by a BC fan at the Ft. Myers airport self service fuel pump who couldn't figure out how to put gas in his airplane. rolleyes

Living in Florida I haven't seen many games, but Cornell seemed to be much more agressive forechecking and attacking the puck on the powerplay than I've seen them in recent years. No real surprise they're starting to get some short handed goals out of it.

By the end of the Maine game the Maine power play unit looked so tired that I saw one of their guys leaning on the board catching his breath while he waited for the rest of his team to bring out the puck.

About 1/2 way through the first Topher came out of the game and headed for the locker room. A few minutes later someone ran over with a skate blade and he was back on the ice soon after, so probably just an equipment malfunction. He didn't look injured. Seeing him play for the first time it's obvious he'll be a Lynah fan favorite. Gave 100% on every shift and then some.

Carefoot, however, blocked a shot with his foot and immediately skated to the bench where he spent a few minutes pacing back and forth behind the bench in obvious pain. Hopefully just a bruise.

Schaffer & Howard exchanged words before the second period. It looked cordial with Howard saying something and Schaffer giving him a thumbs up. However, Cornell did score two quick goals after that so I guess Coach psyched him out ;-)

McCutcheon had some good shifts and a quality scoring opportunity that Howard made a good save on. Made one really nice defensive play.

Cook looked really happy after his power play goal. He posed after the shot instead of running down to first.

My wife thought it was cute that one of the Cornell players got a good luck kiss on the cheek from someone she thought was his mother before the 3rd period. She asked if it was a Cornell tradition or something ;-)

She also noted that of the 4 schools Cornell fans dressed the best and BC fans drank way too much. laugh

Cornell men are of course affectionate and make good spouses and sons. Mom probably whispered in his ear, "Good luck, dear. And [phew] you really should do something about that uniform after the game."

a) A nice thought; please thank her on our collective behalf. b) Intuitively obvious and also perhaps the reason for the refueling problem at RSW.
