Cornell 4 vs. Maine 3 F, Consolation Game

moon Take that Maine!

rock Go Red! banana

First win away from Lynah for the Big Red. No team leaves the tournament with two losses.

Through the 1st: Maine put up 15 shots, Cornell 10. We really took control of the game after killing two penalties but Maine showed great poise to score two straight to tie up the game at 2-2 during the final three minutes of the period

Through the 2nd: Early in the second, Cornell went on its second power play. Topher's shot went wide and Moulson got the rebound and scored the PP goal. Cook makes Cornell 3/3 on the PP 4 minutes into the second after it sounded like Topher missed the goal a second time. Keep missing the goal, Topher! Maine had 4 shots and Cornell had 2 shots during the period (that seems really low).\

Through the 3rd: 7 goals during the first half of the game, zero goals during the final half. Penalties were plenty for Cornell during the period. Maine ends the night 1/10 on the power play and Cornell goes 3/4. "Cornell beats Maine for the first time since November, 1983." -GB Total shots were ?

Three stars were:
1. Matt Moulson, PP goal and two assists
2. Charlie Cook, GW goal and an assist
3. Matthew Deschamps, goal and an assist

Cornell is 8-3-2

1 8:30 Cor pp Pegoraro 2 (Moulson 7, Pokulok 5)
1 17:15 Cor Cam Abbott 3 (Sawada 3, Pokulok 6)
1 17:43 Mai Deschamps (Hopson, Clark)
1 19:53 Mai Jenkus (Hamilton)
2 1:38 Cor pp Moulson 9 (Scott, Cook)
2 4:04 Cor pp Cook 3 (Scott)
2 6:01 Mai pp Léveillé (?)

Game starts with another early penalty on Cornell. I came in a little too late to hear who caused the penalty but it occurred inside the first minute.

12:53 left to go in the first period...still no shots for us...sounds like Maine can't finish again...we're blocking shots, they're missing the net, or McKee is making easy saves.

O'Byrne will be interviewed during intermission and they keep talking about all of his penalties so maybe they'll ask him about it...Pegoraro gets our first shot, deflected by Cam and Howard makes a good save.

It sounds like Cornell sustained good pressure during the PP...Hynes breaks free and missed the breakaway...Howard barely got his left skate on the puck...and then Hynes takes out the net

I think a matchup against Howard, the guy who broke LeNeveu's record, is probably pretty important to McKee as a challenge to his skill and pride. No reason for Schafer to deny him that.

2-0!!!

This would be a major, major game - No. 9 playing No. 10 heading into the midpoint of the season - if we can forget for a moment it's the consolation game neither team wanted to be playing.

What other time this year do we get the chance to play to top ten teams back to back?

O'Byrne interview
Posted by: atb9 (---.nycap.rr.com)
Date: December 29, 2004 04:46PM

Ryan O'Byrne interview is underway:

-Confidence from scoring a goal allowed him to take more shots during the latter part of the game

-Improving the Powerplay from last night--confident in power play and he doesn't think there are any real problems

-Still a big game even though it's a consolation game (there you go)

-More confidence from being a sophomore. Hmmm...I think he said confident or confidence like 10 times.

Nothing about the penalties.

Y'all ever tried to interview an athlete? It's real hard to get a good discussion going. The athlete assumes the reporter is an idiot in some cases, and vice versa. Even if they have an ongoing relationship, if the athlete has any common sense, he's not going to say anything that gets him in trouble with the coach, or gives the other team ammunition, or makes it look like he wants to be promoted from the fourth to the second line.

It's another matter if you're Sports Illustrated and have 10 days to spend with the guy and you keep the tape recorder running. Over time as you build upa relatioship he or she opens up a bit more. Some of the most interesting material is stuff the athlete maybe wishes he hadn't said.

If the USCHO stats are up to date (usually are), Cornell PP has improved from 14x68 20.6% to 17x71 23.9%. Meanwhile Maine #4 on PK (we've dropped to #15) has fallen so far from 83x94 88.2% to 83x97 85.6% which puts them down at the bottom of the teens.

I'm at work with computers without speakers; updates greatly appreciated! Let's Go Red! And if you have Harvard tickets for sale or barter, let me know! :-) (Okay, okay, no more plugs).

Iggy knocks a Maine player off of the puck behind the Maine net and centers to Knoepfli but he is stoned by Howard

We have won a lot of faceoffs between last night and tonight...either we have significantly improved or Maine and BC are weak at faceoffs.

Interesting mention that Léveillé is from the Nanaimo Clippers and thus was a teammate of numerous Cornell players (O'Byrne, Bitz, Hynes, Sawada from the current roster, alone).

Moulson just missed a goal after Bellamy over skated the puck and Downs found Moulson open

Downs takes a shot off of the faceoff and Howard saves with his shoulder to knock the puck out of play...Cornell is still pressing

That's four solid periods in a row, outplaying good teams. Although it was a bummer to be exiled to the Consy, this is hardly an Estero Enema like '01 or '02.

Good interview with Everblades' president and tounry founder (and Cornell hockey alum) Craig Brush. Did I miss next year's field?

Clarkson, Maine, Ohio State and Cornell involved in first tournament.

Coach Walsh from Maine was very interested and helped with ideas for the tournament.

All of the seats weren't filled but all of the tickets were sold--over sold (there you go again ;-) )

Ned has a special place in Craig's heart...loves seeing him and seeing the response he gets from others

Has noticed that hockey knowledge has greatly improved...handed out a pamphlet "Hockey for dummies" during the first tournament

Future of tournament--Maine and Cornell will be main-stays, would love to keep BC on a semi-regular basis if York wants (SCSU is the bastard child apparently). Wants to keep top teams in the tournament and likes to rotate teams in the other two spots because of the large alumni associations in the area.

Maine has controlled the early part of the period...first time I've heard Cornell try to ice the puck during the tournament
