numbers, numbers, numbers

ok i have three questions. about numbers.
1. is it coincidence McKee and LeNeveu are/were both 31? and both named David?
2. Chabot is 1. Other goalies are 1 too. 'Nuther coincidece? or are 1 and 30s traditional golie numbers?
3. is Princeton just weird that they have numbers up to the 60s?

ok i guess that was really 5 questions.

1. Yes, I'm sure it's a coincidence
2. Traditionally, all goalies wore 1. That later expanded to 1, 30-35 as traditional goalie numbers. Schafer seems to frown upon odd number selection, so the goalies tend to use predictable numbers
3. There are plenty of players who pick unusual numbers if their coach lets them. Take a look at rosters around the NCAAs. Sometimes it's a year that holds some significance, a lucky number, or God-knows-what else.

Along these lines, anyone remember Yan Turgeon, who played for Clarkson up to 2000? He wore 77, which happens to be Pierre Turgeon's number. Anyone know if they're related or something?

Numbers in the 30s and 1 are traditional for goalies. Until the 80's (e.g. Gretzky #99) it was rare for any hockey players to have numbers above the 30s.

McKee and Lenny having the same first name is a total coincidence, unless Schafer is superstitious .

1, 30, 31 are traditional goaltender uniform numbers. With Lenny leaving and Chabot (1) and Marr (30) returning, 31 was given to McKee. Yes, it's a coincidence they are both named David.

Yep. I always find myself criticizing college hockey players who demand non-traditional numbers (#1-31). Especially on a team as bad as Princeton. #84, #60, #90. #44. Give me a break. My least favorite was Clarkson's Jan Turgeon who wore #77 to be like Pierre, even though there's no relation. I was OK with Syl Apps wearing his dad's jersey #, but I don't remember what that was. I like that Cornell hasn't had any above 31 in my days (as well as the no #13 "rule". It reinforces the belief that no individual is above the team.

maybe...just maybe...both of these guys were big fans of the legendary goalie Grant Fuhr who was number 31? I mean...lots of athletes wear their favorite players numbers...just a thought. I don't know that the number choice is completely coincidence...their first names on the other hand...

I always thought that was cool, though I'm sure all teams have a specific way they line up for the anthems, even if it's not numerically. They are all superstitious, after all . This reminds me though......I noticed (as I'm sure others did too) that, this past weekend, they lined up slightly differently for the introduction of the starting lineups, with the starters on the goal line as opposed to the side boards with the rest of the team.

Actually her question isn't a no brainer. (Maybe the name part). There certainly could be a reason why they wear the same number, (i.e. same favorite player) and if somebody wants to ask that here, they shouldn't be attacked for it.

Hynes wore 57 in Juniors. I thought that was appropriate.

I still think the best non-traditional number is Jagr's #68. It's the year of the "Prague Spring" and his uncle was a freedom fighter against the Russians.

I have another question about numbers, actually--
I saw that Murray and Lenny "got to keep" their numbers, but Bâby received #25 (Brian Swanson has - or already had; I don't know the chronology of the team - #21).

Do most teams allow their new players to keep their numbers? Is this a "selling point" when they're trying to acquire new players?

We've talked about the significance of #9, the lack of #13 on our team... are there any other numbers that have particular widespread significance?

From what I understand on the Cornell team, anyway, players can request numbers the summer before they arrive, and are given a choice among the available numbers. This, however, does not guarantee they'll get a number they request. I know someone who listed his top three jersey numbers and got a fourth. C'est la vie, I guess. The process is probably similar for other teams. I remember when Rick DiPietro played for Boston University, he had an odd number (too lazy to look up what it was), and I believe Parker said something to the effect of, "I thought it was pretty ballsy that this guy came in and requested a number out of the ordinary for our team."

Seriously, what is your problem? And how does asking a "no-brainer" question make someone look like they "know shit?"

Although you've done a pretty good job sharpening up your posts this year, I would like to remind you that you used to say that McKee sucked, let in goals because he spazzed out at the end of games, and that you could have saved some of his goals against. So don't criticize anyone on the forum for stupidity.

i remembered the another one i had...in a team picture i got at the beginning of the year, McKee is wearing twenty-something and is not wearing all the goalie stuff...what's with that?

David McKee has been 41 since he played hockey, he was promise 41 when he signed with cornell but then he found out that cornell only goes to 31 so he had to take that #.
