While every one has a hot take nowadays, I do believe any hope for the post season start and end in LP and AZ. OOC wins are paramount. It starts today...Hopefully the boys are hungry after the break and they've tightened up the D. UMass is missing two players to the Junior Worlds. #LGR

As #21, they play #9 and #16 at least twice. This is that little springboard in front of the pommel horse.

Fegaras needs to get rid of that sooner. There was plenty of time to at least move it to one of the two nearby defenders

Perception is funny. In realtime I thought Bancroft did that on purpose and should be tossed. On slow mo I am not even sure he got the guy, who might have possumed.

Bancroft had a busy period. He got creamed and looked like he was injured. Then he took a penalty which we killed. Then he scored. And then there was The Incident.

Fegaras is getting pummeled. He took at least three big hits that period, one of which led to the goal.

If they give Bancroft a major for that it would be completely insane.

The ESPN announcers were good too—were they the UMass announcers?

I’m surprised shots were only 7-6 in the third period; seemed like Cornell had at most 4 minutes of O-zone time in the third. After playing really solidly the first two periods, Cornell could do almost nothing in the third besides dump and change. That is not the way to protect a lead—the way to protect a lead is to possess the puck.

Good result overall but obviously the late goal stings.

Interesting. The commentators both seemed slightly partial to UMass (though overall both were solid by college announcer standards).

Still getting very little production out of DeSantis and Psenicka. Robertson has 12 assists in his first 12 career games. I assume he is talking to NHL teams interested in drafting him after this season.

if i had to pick one thing it was that we were sometimes really sloppy getting out of the zone against the forecheck.

the EAG was a lucky bounce to a guy in front of an open net so no complaints about that.

I was surprised by how physical UMass was. Also, and I’m mentioning this only because it bothers some people on this forum, they have 13 draft picks. I would have though a Hockey East team with 13 draft picks would beat us with skill and speed rather than big hitting. In fact, UMass delivered around ten crushing hits and one of them led directly to a goal. The other goal was off a rebound. If UMass had a lot of skill, Cornell did a good job containing it. Outside of one series where Scott Morrow skated around some Cornell players to create a good chance, UMass created chances and possession mostly via hitting and winning battles.

It felt like looking in a mirror, to me. I like how they play because it's how we play now -- well-balanced between offense and defense.

One of the announcers kept talking about how Hockey East is the more physical conference while ECAC is more skill/finesse.

I was wondering what he was talking about, but to be fair, it's not like I ever watch Hockey East except when we play them.

Yeah lol, that’s one of the reasons I thought they were the UMass announcers. I thought the perception of Hockey East vs ECAC was the exact opposite.

The Elysium Arena is long gone, but this reminded me that when I lived in Shaker Heights, the Elysium Skating Club regularly skated at the city’s Thorton Park rink. The skaters were memorable because they skated as couples, they were old, or so I thought then (probably only in their 60s and 70s), and most everyone, both men and women, wore hockey skates. Interestingly, they were probably old enough to have skated at the Elysium Arena.

I'm not actually sure when Cornell becomes "Ivy" in spirit. By the letter, it's not until 1954 that anyone is officially Ivy. But in spirit, we were the poor bastard public stepchild compared to the other snoots.

Man, now I remember this after seeing it on the list. I went to the game at the Coliseum. It was ... not hard to get good seats. I also remember that they must have recently replaced a pane of glass with unenthusiastic arena workers because there was a lot of glass on the ground behind one of the nets. They did not really try to stop kids from walking around the area and getting up against the glass. The 20th century was a different time.

I'm not actually sure when Cornell becomes "Ivy" in spirit. By the letter, it's not until 1954 that anyone is officially Ivy. But in spirit, we were the poor bastard public stepchild compared to the other snoots.

Well, to be fair Yale was the Connecticut state "land-grant" college until 1893, Brown was Rhode Island's state "land-grant" until 1894. Dartmouth wanted to keep up the facade of educating "Indians," so it only "partnered" with the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts until 1891, when NHCAMA moved to Durham and became UNH.

An anti-intellectual populist movement -- sound familiar? -- led by the Grange was behind this movement stripping Ivies of their land-grant status. The Yale case, in particular, involved a very acrimonious lawsuit. I recall reading a doctoral dissertation (from tOSU, IIRC) which describes the movement in more detail. The Grange even developed a curriculum for first-year students at the new UConn antecedent. The dissertation says the curriculum lasted exactly one year.

Of course Dartmouth's involvement was bitterly ironic because the "land grant" was really a "land grab" of lands ripped off from Indians. But Cornell benefitted the most.

No conference back then. Those were invitational exhibitions at gorgeous barns in weird places.

There was sorta a conference then
