Sejna Scores

After signing a deal earlier today, Sejna joins the Blues and scores a PPG against arguably the best goalie in the NHL, Patrick Roy. Here's to hoping that NHL action doesn't influence the Hobey vote. But it is one hell of an accomplishment, kudos.

Wow, that was fast. Assisted by Tkachuk and Demitra on the PP.

Congrats to him.

Of course, since he was signed after the NHL trading deadline, he cannot play in the playoffs.

Pretty impressive what he did today though - never practiced with them, probably never met them. Wow.

My understanding is the voting's been over for awhile now. In fact the three "finalists" are simply the three players who received the most votes.

Would be nice if the winner was the only one of the 3 still in school.

It's amazing to me that they have so much confidence in him that they slotted him in on the power play with guys like Demetra. When it comes to the NHL, go Sejna! That's quite a jump.

When it comes to the Hobey, f*** Sejna! :-)

Okay, is CC on the quarter system? How come Sejna is off to NHL during school year?

It's called "a fuckload of cash," Tom. Nieuwendyk left between the end of Cornell's 1986-87 season and the end of the spring semester, too. If Sejna really cares about his CC degree, he'll finish it someday.

1) They are on the semester system.

2) The NHL is paying him more than CC.

I figure money motivated him to leavie early. At first, it seems strange to quit classes when you're almost done. Then, I read on USCHO forum that this is his last and only NHL game this season, since NHL won't allow him to play in the post season. So, he will finish the semester at CC.

Well seeing as he's a JR he'd still have quite a bit to go anyway, might as well take the money and run.

Is that a technical term?

Since when are there so many guys named Tom on this board, anyway? ;-)

And from the ESPN.com recap of the game:

"Rookie Eric Sejna made it 3-2 with 12 seconds left by lifting a rebound over Roy on a power play in his first NHL game.

Sejna, the NCAA's leading scorer this season with nearby Colorado College, signed with the Blues early Sunday."

No, that would be "a metric fuckload of cash." Or "an avoirdupois fuckload of cash."

Actually, I don't think it's that surprising to see Sejna on the PP in his first game. It was the last game of the season and was entirely meaningless to the Blues. So the team gets to see how the kid does in a low pressure debut while at the same time resting one of their regulars.

Kids often leave school as soon as their season ends. No big surprise here. Even if he were a senior he could easily return to school after missing a few days and still finish the season.

Actually, they're on a weird system where they take one course at a time (sort of like Cornell College). So a brief departure for the NHL might just mean he missed one "block".

Besides - wasn't the game in Denver? That's what - 2-3 hours from CC? He might have only missed a day or two of classes. I'm sure his much-touted GPA can withstand that hit. He'll probably miss more class time to attend the Hobey ceremony than he did to play that game....
