The first meeting between these two despite it being so late in the season. 8:30 start time instead of the usual 7:00 for whatever reason. I'm actually glad I didn't get tickets for this game considering the late start.

The Teevee Network airing the game is having a doubleheader tonight. Maine-Providence started at 6pm.

Now that was a period of hockey. Dominated SOG, carried play, only goal was a shortie, which sucks, but shit happens.
I didn't see the third goal but the first one from Rauter's was a sweet little slide across the crease into the corner off of beautiful blueline-to-blueline pass from (I think) Kaldis and the second was a PPG after a minute of domination (half of which, to be fair, was 5x3) that Angello finished with a sniped short-side wrister off a pass from behind the cage from Kubiak. And even though I didn't see the goal, nice to see @washer_dwyer get his first goal of the year.

Not a bad period but way too many penalties. Almost a full minute of 5x3 was too much and Vecchione banged one in with about 2 seconds left, leaving another 44 seconds of PK, which the team handled.
The biggest disappointment of the period was Starrett missing on the easiest lead pass he'll ever have, blowing a chance to give Angello a breakaway. And then he took the team's second dumb boarding penalty of the game.
Still, Gillam's looking solid and the team is mostly playing well. The broadcasters were talking about Union carrying play, but, come on they were on the PP the whole time.

if this team can stop with the dumb penalties they have a big up side.. when you add some marginal calls by the refs on top of the dumb ones it costs you goals and games.. 5x5 we were far the better team tonight and dartmouth as well.. 5x5 we allowed like 1 goal in three games.. thats enough to win with..
still left some goals out there with a bit better finishing.
it helps when the guys who can snipe get the shots though..
Angello needs to play at this level every game.
huge win

Now that was a period. The tying goal was a little fluky and a little weak but the Widener goal was a pretty short-angle shot that may have banked off of the goalie and the Angello goal was fucking awesome. Oh god I'll want to watch that one over and over again.
Huge win. This team needed a signature win and finally got one. Top five team on the road and to be honest we looked like the better team for most of the night.

The TUFFTV feed cut out at 11:00, when they switched to whatever was scheduled at that time. I wound up listening to the last few minutes, so didn't get to see the Weidner or Angello goals. Perhaps they'll be video posted somewhere.

Cornell had 5 2nd period penalties, with the embellishment penalty being a BS call.
Union looked good in the second when they played nearly half the period up at least one man.

NOW you tell me...
I just figured they had switched to what was scheduled, and there was no chance they were going to switch back. I went straight for the radio, and then tried to log on to the Union site, just to see if perhaps it was late enough in the game that the feed would be free. (I knew that was a long shot, and of course it was not.) Now I feel stupid for not checking the TUFFTV feed again, but in my defense, I was pacing instead of sitting at the computer.

In game emotional roller coaster. Elation/surprise to anger to elation/relief.
What is it with the effing penalties? TMMOTI?! Again? Really!?
This is a potentially great team that keeps shooting itself in the skates.
Last week it bit us twice in the gluteus. Last night we escaped with a win.
Can they avoid the same thing tonight!?
We will soon see.

I've only seen the goal highlights and they were pretty slick. Tough to pick a favorite, though I think Angello's second would get the nod. Good stick in the defensive end, the foot work to break out, enough speed to stay ahead of the Union players, and the finish while being dragged down.

the two penalties behind the play were just dumb. the hook behind the goal behind the puck was dumb and something normally not called, but still no reason for it. the embellishment penalty was a joke. never saw the high stick call in the 3rd, the too many men penalty by the letter was probably a good call, but he had no stick so tough to say he was really playing anything,
we had by far the better of the scoring chances, and it was nice to see so much puck control lead to getting the puck to the front of the net for once. Control the leading scorer in the country and Union didnt seem to do much else.
Was anyone aware the goalie was hurt before the game started?

I'm sure they will cut out enough stoppages to fit it into 2.5 hours. That's pretty common. It always happens when the NCAA regional games are delayed broadcasts.

From Brandon Thomas's recap on CU site.
I think I understand what coach was saying.
We've had games in our grasp, like last weekend, but took bad penalties and lost. But at Union we were able to overcome it.
Interesting that he talks about how he didn't handle it well. I'd think that would help the team to put past discretion behind them.
I still think Brandon is one of the best college hockey writers, at least in the ECAC.
"It's an intriguing game. We had in hand," said Mike Schafer, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey. "Similar things happened to us in the game where we're struggling to find out where we took some (penalty) calls. Our guys didn't respond very well; I didn't respond very well (last week). But I thought our team handled it well tonight."

It seems like one of the best moves by Schafer, in this part of the season, has been to break up the JAM line. Vanderlaan may have lost some scoring, but all the lines seem to be meshing well and are threatening.
Of course, as soon as I post this, he'll put it back together and they'll all get hat tricks.

Agreed. The contrast with Union was stark -- they have great speed everywhere but that Vecchione line towers above the others. It reminds me of our HAD (Hughes-Andison-Derraugh) line in 91, where everybody got 50+ points but if you stopped them we were dead.
Vecchione belongs in the NHL right now. He's ridiculously better than anyone we've played this year, like Nieuwy in 87 when it just wasn't fair.

To continue my streak of posts:
Last night was the first time in a while where I had that great feeling of being in a visiting CU crowd and going home a winner. Some Union fans were mouthing off before and during the game, especially at 3-3. But our fans were really into it and never quit supporting the team. Of course having a band that comes in and takes over is really nice.
Comments from U fans as we were leaving, about how CU fans travel well and that we have one of the few bands that regularly travels, meant I didn't have to say anything, just walk out smiling.
I can remember that feeling going all the way back to the 60s in the Boston Garden. I hope it continues.
P.S. If you appreciate the pep band, give them a donation. More money means more travel and they really add to the fun at the rink.

I dunno if it was mic placement, but our crowd sounded tremendous on the TV broadcast. Towards the end of the game it did sound like Olden Days, with constant noise and a dominant presence, and going back and forth between the crowd and the band just blowing the home crowd out. If the Youngins want to know why we senile old bastards are always on about the crowd and how it can help, last night was Exhibit A.

I finally got to see the embellishment call on Weidner; WTF was that call? That about an all-time worst.
We certainly carried the play and the win was well-earned. Really like the way Angello played -- certainly one of his better performance.
Boy can Vecchione shoot. I can certainly see him being an effective NHL player.

I don't know if that particular play warrented a call, but he has deserved that call in several of our last games. I suspect the refs saw something earlier and were watching for it. Not behavior you like to see from a wearer of the C.scoop85

After the play, as Weidner was being helped off the ice, the announcers were suggesting that he may have had his skate broken on the play. Perhaps the way the broken skate caused him to look somewhat "wobbly" caused the ref to think he was embellishing.
That's the only thing I can think of, as little sense as that makes.

But he was almost immediately in the box. How could a skate be fixed that quickly? Loose Bauer pop off blade?
Is there any chance they could access the embellishment for the alleged acting job as he was getting up or pretending he couldn't get to his feet without difficulty?

One more leftover note from our win over Union, is that I don't recall the TV announcers saying anything about the fact that Union's starting senior goalie missed the game due to an injury, and the goalie who did play hadn't been in a game since November. That could have helped explain his struggles in the first period.

I just watched this all again.
The broadcast cuts to a commercial, showing the Union player in the box, and without any reference to Cornell even taking a penalty. When they come back from commercial, they talk about the penalty to Weidner. A little later he is shown in the penalty box, doing something to his right skate. It almost looked like he was tying it. I'm now wondering if before he went into the box, he was given a spare skate. (Do they bring more than one set of skates on the road for each player?)
In any case, he was definitely doing something involving the skate, while in the penalty box, before play had started again.

But not the fact that we outshot them 20-7 in the first period.

As near as I can tell we haven't beaten a higher ranked ECAC team than Union was last night (#4) in a league game since beating the #1 Elves in '96.

It took me a while to figure out that you meant "higher ranked ECAC team than Union was last night," not "higher ranked ECAC team than we were at the time." 'cause the latter happens pretty darn often.

That cuts both ways. I'd much rather we be ranked higher than all the other ECAC teams all the time.

By the way, this is another excellent opportunity for me to beg, again, that if anybody knows where I can find poll data prior to 1997 I'd essentially kill for it (and I know a guy...).
I assume that between 1966 and 1979 we spent most if not all of our time in the top 10, and it would be wonderful to see what our and our opponents' ranks were during that period. Those legendary games against BU, Denver, etc were often battles between the #1 and #2, and if only for completeness I'd love to have that data.

Watching my DVR recording of the Union game it is easy to see the blade of Weidner's right skate move away from him as he fell against the boards. The announcers showed the replay right after the commercial break following the penalties.

So are you suggesting that as I guessed, the skate being broken, causing Weidner to appear unstable, is what caused the ref to call the embellishment penalty?
Assuming that is what happened, once the penalty had been called, is there anything that would allow the ref to reverse the call if Weidner showed the ref the broken skate?

Yes, but not actually broken. Bauer skates have a neat trigger mechanism that allows for quick blade replacement. You can see that Jake as he is being helped of the ice has no blade connected to the white plastic under the skate.
I assume that if the refs realized their error that they could reverse themselves. One of the announcers chuckled as they showed the replay.
I've heard that some pros have the blades changed with sharp replacements after every shift. That seems unlikely but certainly Bauer has made a fortune with this patent.
