I was reading up on this yesterday, after hearing about it during the broadcast of the Northeastern vs. North Dakota game.

I came across the following Facebook post (made before he had passed away, obviously) which I think is worth sharing:

In case the URL with photo can't be shared well, here's the text, copied and pasted:

I took this photo before Butch fell last Friday. I was taking selfies with all of the officials before the BGSU and Minnesota State game on Friday. I'm sure no one is surprised that Butch decided to be a clown when I took our selfie! I'm the scorekeeper for Ferris, and got asked to be the scorekeeper for the Final Five. It was such a great time, and Butch was surprised to see me. I think all the refs will forgive me if I admit he is my favorite ref. When he comes in for a game at Ferris he always gives me a big bear hug hello. The funniest thing that ever happened at Ferris is that he put a player in the box, then leaned in to the scorer's table and said "He's in the box for 2 minutes - you get to choose why." And he skated away! I still laugh about that. Can't remember what our crew chose for the penalty, but that will always be one of my best memories of Butch. I watched him fall, and it was terrifying. I haven't stopped praying for him since. We had his sweater with us at the scorer's table on Saturday night and I grabbed onto it and said a prayer for him. Get better Butch! I want another one of those hugs the next time you come to Ferris!
