The season gets underway tonight with the Red/White scrimmage with the same format as last year with both the men's and women's team. Admission is free and there's a great raffle with lots of prizes. The game starts at 7:30 so come on by after Homecoming!

It's on CornellRadio.com, not ILDN.

How did they do the switching between men and women? Were there whistles every minute or two or did they change on the fly? If on the fly, did they ever end up with mixed lines or did they always dump the puck and change whenever it was time?
Seems like this could make for a pretty disjointed game, even considering that it's an exhibition.

This is the 2nd year or so for this format. Women and men each on for about 2.5 minutes, then a team change on a whistle. So no mixed gender lines ever. The succeeding faceoff was wherever the puck was when the whistle blew. So each team, red and white had about four lines, 4 pairs of defense, and at least 2 goalies. In each 2.5 minute shift, both sets of lines got to play. The coaches setup different combinations 5x5, 5x4 going each way, 4x4, etc. Whenever a penalty was called, play stopped and the other team got a penalty shot. No one went to the box.
A few observations:
- This format is really tough on the goalies. Very hard to get into the flow of the game when they were on for only 2.5 minutes. Mitch Gillam and Hayden Stewart swapped sides during the two "periods" with Ryan Coon getting a few "shifts" in net. I thought Stewart looked really comfortable most of the night, while Gillam appeared to struggle at times.
- Ostensible top line of Lowery, Weidner, and John McCarron looked quite good. Various different combinations were used during the power plays.
- There were only 7 defenseman on the mens side. Ryan Bliss didn't play.
- Overall more scoring (both men and women) than I've seen in a red/white in quite some time.
- The upperclass women looked quite good--moved the puck well. They "know" each other really well, so very little chance for breakaways or letting Saulnier, Jenner, and Fulton to get open. Some of the freshman woman looked a bit "out of place", but I'm sure most will come along.
Can't wait for the exhibition games and for the season to start. We've talked about the Ivy League "late start" for years. It IS really about time that the Ivies catch up with the rest of the college hockey world and begin its season at the same time.

The little I heard of the radio PBP remarked that Stewart was REALLY aggressive, but looked good.
