On paper, it's a great team. These five (of the 10 entering hockey recruits, more than usual) have a lot of promise based on their play and awards last year. Is Gillam our next goalie after Andy Iles' final season?

Holden Anderson,Defenseman — 6-feet, 185 pounds — Montreal, Quebec ... a two-time participant in the Central Canada Cup Challenge and a two-time invitee to the Team Canada World Junior A camp.

Matt Buckles, Forward — 6-foot-2, 205 pounds — Toronto, Ontario ... Buckles represented Team Canada East in the 2012 World Junior 'A' Challenge and was named a member of the South Division All-Stars at the Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge for a second straight season ... ranked 134th in the mid-term rankings and 117th in the final rankings. The CSS announced in May 2013 that Buckles was the recipient of the OJHL Top Prospect Award.

Mitch Gillam, Goalie — 6-feet, 180 pounds — Peterborough, Ontario — Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) ... nomination for the prestigious 2013 RBC Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year. He was named the Chiefs' most valuable player in both 2012 and 2013, as well as the rookie of the year in 2012.

Clint Lewis, Defense — 6-foot-2, 210 pounds ... fourth straight season the Big Red has added a player directly from the esteemed U.S. National Team Development Program, following in the footsteps of Andy Iles '14, Cole Bardreau '15 and Gavin Stoick '16. .... Lewis was ranked 164th among North American skaters on the NHL Central Scouting Service's mid-term rankings for the 2013 draft, then 181st in the final rankings.

Patrick McCarron, Defense — 6-foot-2, 210 pounds — Burnsville, Minnesota — U.S. National Team Development Program ... successful three-year stint with the St. Michael's Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, ... , helping the team capture the OJHL championship while being named the league's Defenseman of the Year and a first-team all star. McCarron was also the winner of the inaugural Canadian Junior Hockey League Defenseman of the Year honor, which was selected from a pool spanning all 10 of Canada's Junior A leagues.

I will be interested to see how Sade does. Hitmen are Tier 3 but turning out some good college players recently. They're a credible organization.

Is Rauter not coming in a surprise? He will nearly turn 21 as a freshman.

BTW, Patrick McCarron's height/weight etc on the Cornell site are a mistaken repeat of Lewis'.

His info should read:

6-foot-3, 185 pounds — Etobicoke, Ontario — St. Michael's Buzzers (OJHL)

Corrected above.

Has anyone ever attempted to study the correlation between junior stats and success (however you wish to defi it) at the college level? Every recruit seems to have impressive statistics but it's hard to say whether any of it means anything more than the kid is qualified to be a college player. You'd obviously have to correct for such things as league quality and age.

I'm pretty sure that at least some pro organizations do something like this. But I'm asking about public, not proprietary, studies.

I like we have a defenseman named "Sade". He will enjoy inflicting pain upon the opponents.

Rauter separated his shoulder and had surgery. He will turn 21 after his freshman season if he comes the season after next. He only has 27 junior games under his belt so probably needs some seasoning. I hope he makes it, my kids play for the same youth organization that he played for. Unbelievable sniper as a 16 year old......

And more on McCarron from CHN and USCHO.

In 49 games with the U-18 squad in 2012-13, McCarron posted 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points, while racking up 166 penalty minutes.

McCarron said that he had spent the previous two weeks working out in Kalamazoo, Mich., with Western Michigan’s strength and conditioning coach and some of his future Broncos teammates. His major junior rights, however, are held by the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, and both London and Kalamazoo are situated about two hours away from his home in Grosse Pointe, Mich.

“I’ll probably make a decision in the next week and get back to you guys,” he joked with media members.

He said there were positives to both choices. Playing in college would allow him to build up his legs and body more, and he added that education was also a priority in his family. At Western, he also would get to play for head coach and former NHL bench boss Andy Murray.

Concerning the OHL, he said it was more of a pro-style game that also permitted fighting, and might also get him to the NHL more quickly.

Why would he get to build up his legs and body more in college vs. the OHL?

Sounds like education is more a priority for his family than for himself.

The official spin is that college teams spend more time on practice and conditioning than CHL teams do.

Is it spin if it's true? OHL teams had 68 games last year. Generally 3 games each week.

The Barrie Colts played 22 addtional games in the post-season. That's a 90-game season. In the WHL: Edmonton played 72 + 22 = 94.

That's not counting 4 or 5 exhibition games.
