I don't understand this question. What is a "support role?" I've never seen such a dissimilar selection of players in one list.

Formal definitlion: This award generally goes to an athlete whose contributions do not show up in the box score.
Informally, I personally think that Birch and Lowry are major players who are not "supporting." However, in opening the awards up to the public I did not feel right about censoring the nominations.

Nor should top-4 defensemen be considered supporting cast. Just because they're not on the scoresheet doesn't mean they aren't vital to every game and log a ton of ice time.
