Riley Nash, playing on Carolina's second line with Jokinen and Skinner tonight against the Rangers, was flat out robbed in close by Lundqvist in the 2nd period. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the Rangers came right back and scored just a few seconds later.

But two players the Sharks must decide on before April 3 are Ryane Clowe and Douglas Murray -- two warriors of the Sharks’ contending teams of the past decade, but both also on expiring contracts and UFA-eligible after the season.

From column on espn.com NHL section. Any other news ?

Clearly you meant "as is often the case" in a general hockey context, not a Rangers context.

Indeed I did, apologies for confusing anyone who thought I was referring the offensive "prowess" of the Rangers.

Standings wise, Pittsburgh is in 1st place by 5 points. San Jose currently in 9th, out of a playoff spot by 1 pt. Given how the sharks perform (or not) in the playoffs, if Douglas wants to raise Lord Stanley's Cup, he has a better chance to do that in Pittsburgh.

Colin Greening scores a goal in Ottawa's shoot-out win over Brodeur and the Devils. The Sens had 14 shots on goal... for the game. They must lead the league in 1 goal/OT_L/shoot out games and so far are coming out on the good side of those games.

Any else surprised that SJ got a 2103 2nd pick and either a 2nd or 3rd round pick for 2014? His ice time has been falling and his role has changed the last couple of years. He seems like a 5th defenseman now, big and valuable, but two reasonably high high draft picks? IMO this is a good trade for San Jose, I'd be surprised if anyone else was offering a comparable package (it's understood that Pittsburgh's draft selection position will be lower than most teams). Good for Douglas though to go to a real contender, I don't know him but he seems loyal and a real team guy who will certainly help protect some very valuable teammates.

The Penguins could really use a defenseman like Murray. Right now, they've got Mark Eaton, who is okay-ish, and Deryk Engelland, who's pretty much just there to punch people, as 2nd/3rd line defensive-minded dmen. Murray's an upgrade over either, or at absolute worst, an upgrade over Engelland.

Riley Nash had a nice primary assist on the powerplay last night, but it ended up being Carolina's only goal in a 4-1 loss to Winnipeg. Matt Moulson and the Islanders fared a little better as he finished off a great individual forechecking effort by setting up John Tavares on the game-winning goal late in the 3rd.

Ben Scrivens also got the start for Toronto last night and was impressive, stopping 40 of 42 Florida shots in a 3-2 Toronto win.

How ridiculous is it that I'm a little upset that the bar is now so high for the Pens? "If we don't win it all, this season was a failure" is a lot less fun than "we have a real good shot this year."

Murray at kleast is slated to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. I wouldn't expect a high price for a 2-3 month rental.

Meanwhile, Murray +1 on 18+ minutes TOI tonight with Pittsburgh.

I've seen "primary assist" cropping up a lot lately. Is the result of somebody actually distinguishing between 1st and 2nd assists? Is it a saber thing?

The Chicago suburbs' Daily Herald headlines the Blackhawk's interest in trading for the Islanders' Frans Nielsen, but mentions Ryan O'Byrne as another possibility to shore up the defensive corps for a playoff run.

Among the other defensemen who might interest the Hawks are Buffalo's Robyn Regehr, Colorado's Ryan O'Byrne and Edmonton's Mark Fistric and Ryan Whitney.

Speaking of ESPN, it was neat hearing Darren Elliot talk about the 1980 run that took us to the NCAA tourney during one of the games. It brought back memories.
