Don't look now, but the ECAC has put together its best OOC season in a long while so far this year.

There's a long way to go, but the ECAC is sporting a 30-16-2 OOC record and is 16-12-5 vs. "big three" opponents. [www.uscho.com] The ECAC is the only conference that can brag that it's at or over .500 against all other conferences.

Let's hope the trend holds through the holiday tournament season.

It makes a huge difference. Look at PWR right now:

3. Dartmouth
5. Yale
6. Union
12. Quinnipiac
13. Harvard
---
18. Cornell
21. SLU
22. Colgate

The conference could be headed for 4 teams in the NCAAs for the first time since the Hockey East split after 1984.

I was talking about this with a friend after Cornell kicked Michigan's ass even though we've struggled against ECAC teams (plus our 4 points against CC). Could it be the ECAC is really good this year?

I leave it to younger, more flexible brains to be able to adapt to that kind of revolutionary concept. ;)

Could someone explain the algorithm used for the decimal fractions beneath each "league vs. league" record?

In the total column on the right, it's winning percentage. In the other columns, it's bad programming.

And it was after inventing the eight track that he realized that "You never have to fix anything you leave out." These were hilariously unreliable. My wife's aunt even owned a Panasonic eight track recorder which I never was able to resuscitate in spite of many repair attempts.

If the season ended today, there would be six ECAC teams in the tournament with Colgate being first team out. Harvard is 16 but Niagara, presumptive AHA rep, is 14.

Rk
1 Boston College
2 New Hampshire
3 Dartmouth
4 Notre Dame
5 Boston University
6 Quinnipiac
7 Western Michigan
8 Yale
9 Cornell
10 Miami
11 North Dakota
12 Minnesota
13 Union
14 Niagara
15 Denver
16 Harvard

So far, the ECAC has only played 61 inter-conference games (as distinct from non-conference games) and has 37 remaining. The results are definitely encouraging, but let's not be counting chickens. IF we keep up our current .595 win % vs the Big 4 and IF our top teams don't start gacking up conference games to the bottom feeders, 4 teams is likely and 5 would be possible. On the other hand, a bad showing over Christmas (and there are quite a number of games against the BUs, BCs, and UNHs of the world) and we'll be right back to 2 maybe 3 as per usual.

I have no hard data to back up this claim, but my instinct is that several times over the past few seasons the ECAC has gotten out of the gate well only to get destroyed over the Christmas break. I really hope this year is different and the league holds up, and I think there are a couple systemic effects that are encouraging (1 - the gap between Haves and Have Nots in the ECAC has closed, 2 - the rest of the NCAA power teams except for BC seem to have come back to the pack).

We Ancients who enjoyed the ECAC's short-lived superiority over HE in the wake of the Great Divorce have been waiting more than 20 years for the ECAC to get back to parity with the other big conferences. We may be getting there (I mean, Notre Dame is 12-0, so anything can happen), but I'm going to remain somewhat pessimistic until after New Year's Day.

I came up with 39 remaining interconference games (ignoring Union-RPI non-conference game). Of those, only 15 are against current TUCs (16 depending on outcome of Beanpot first round). At least 7 (up to 9 depending on holiday tournament outcomes) against the WCHA, 17 (up to 19) against Hockey East, only 3 against the CCHA, and 10 against Atlantic Hockey.

You're probably right - I did a quick manual scan through the upcoming games, so it's not too surprising if I missed a couple. I had 7 or 8 against WCHA, 16 or 17 against HEA, and matched your CCHA and AHA games. Either way, there are still a lot of inter-conference games to go.

When one says "Notre Dame," football is logically implied. The term has no meaning in any other context.

It's like "Harvard" and "sucking."

And Harvard kicks things off with a 5-0 loss at home to Lowell thus dropping Harvard off the bubble and down to 23 while making Lowell a TUC.

Looks like they did it with class, too - 9 penalties for 34 minutes and they gave up a 5x3 powerplay goal in the last minute of the game.

Unfortunately for them, that's all they have left on their non-conference schedule: Northeastern and BU followed by BC in the first round of the Beanpot and the Beanpot consolation game.

Michigan salvaged a split with Western Michigan. CC was swept by St. Cloud. Denver dropped their second game with Bemidji.

Ferris is now the last TUC (27th). CC is 26th. Michigan is not a TUC. Maine and Duluth aren't either. The non-conference schedule looked good on paper.

Except that as of now, it looks like our SOS will actually be boosted by our *conference* games, so there's that. 5 of the top 13 teams are from the ECAC right now - crazy (that includes Cornell, of course, so we only get to play 4 of them).

For some reason the CHN mobile app isn't showing the Qunnipiac game as even taking place. The CHN website has the game listed in the "live scoreboard" section, but with no score. I checked the free video, available below, and Qunnipiac is up 4-3 heading into the third.

Quinnipiac and Dartmouth are 3 and 4, respectively, in Pairwise. Yale is 7 and Cornell 12. Union is 16 and would be out of the tournament if the season ended today due to Atlantic Hockey autobid.

(Edited to reflect Quinipiac's sweep of UNO caused them to swap places with Dartmouth.)

My bad. I had only been paying attention to Niagara. RMU really moved up this weekend.

edit: Actually, it depends how you look at it. When Jayson Moy does "Bracketology" on USCHO he awards the autobid to whichever team is in first place. Niagara is in first place in Atlantic Hockey by a large margin (9-0-1 for 19 points in league games, 10-3-4 overall ) but 19 in Pairwise. RMU is way back in the Atlantic Hockey standings at 4-3-1 for 9 points (9-4-2 overall). I think if Moy wrote that column today both RMU and Niagara would be in and Union would be out.

For those of us who remember Dartmouth in the 80's and 90's, this morning's PWR is the equivalent of hell freezing over.

They couldn't stand the success.

Dartmouth comes down to earth, losing to UMass 3-2.

In all, 23 penalties were called, totaling 87 minutes. That figure included two game misconducts (one aside), three five-minute majors and four 10-minute misconducts.

Each team got a SH and UMass had two on PP.

They're now 4th in PWR. I posted the new PWR on polls thread.

I remember 1980.:-)

I do too. My favorite memory is Bob Gaudet trying to shoot a puck at us during warm-ups in the Boston Garden because he got tired of us calling him an ugly sieve.

Well he was.

So you still think the ECAC gets no respect? Here's Paula Weston's, USCHO CCHA columnist, ballot for their poll.

1. Minnesota
2. Boston College
3. Notre Dame
4. New Hampshire
5. Denver
6. Miami
7. Boston University
8. North Dakota
9. Quinnipiac
10. Dartmouth
11. Western Michigan
12. Nebraska-Omaha
13. St. Cloud State
14. Minnesota State
15. Union
16. Cornell
17. Robert Morris
18. Ferris State
19. Niagara
20. Holy Cross

Read more: [www.uscho.com]
No, I don't think I want to read more. In a year when we have a good OOC league record and good pairwise, probably the same thing, we can hardly break the top ten.

Better than I thought it would. I think you're right her bracket was a bit harsh, but I tend to put more stock in KRACH than PWR when it comes to rating teams, so I'd probably hold off on declaring ECAC Hockey the best conference in the country or anything crazy like that.

Maybe she knew something we didn't. For the ECAC, a dismal start to the weekend. I'll take the blame. Q is second in PWR. Dartmouth 7, and Yale 12. We're hanging in at 15.
