Meh. At least MSP would have been reasonable for travel purposes.

Milwaukee is only 2 hours away from Green Bay. Plenty of non-stops from NY and Philly (and Cleveland, FWIW). And last time I drove the four hours from Chicago.

And the bracket actually makes sense given the rules. Keep the 2-3 pairings correct (5-12, 6-11, etc.). Put Minnesota at home, then the highest 1-seed gets the lowest available 2-seed. And since we couldn't play Union and the 2 CCHA school couldn't play Michigan, we HAD to be in Green Bay.

From O'Hare it's just about 3 hours. You must've flown into Midway.

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in '06 and will be there again this year. It's also right by the arena. AAA rate and senior rate are $98. In '06 the Wisconsin team was staying there - don't know if they always host the #1 seeded team. I just canceled Worcester and St. Paul reservations also.

As a Michigan and Cornell grad, I am quite excited for this, given that I hate Michigan hockey with a passion inversely proportionate to that with which I root for Michigan football.

But also, and RichH and I discussed this in AC, I feel we match up best with Michigan, amongst the 1st seeds that we can play. Take a look at their scoring and defense by periods: they are overwhelmingly a first-period team. BC and NoDak are more balanced, and that's no fun for us, I think. If we can stay close, by which I mean even down by one heading into the second, I think we have a good chance of winning this game. I think we have the speed to stay with Michigan, and one would hope, the Hahvahd debacle fresh in the collective mind of the team, that we can play a disciplined shut down style from the start and then open it up in subsequent periods.

Things to Do in Green Bay

1) watch hockey Friday
2) Lambeau Field Tour - Lambeau's across the street from the rink.
3) National Railroad Museum
4) watch other regionals in a sports bar
5) watch hockey Saturday

Regional road crowds have been dwindling in recent years. I think Cornell sold 300 tickets for Minneapolis in '05, it was probably under 200 in GB in '06 and less for Grand Rapids in '09. Even for Easern regionals, there was a much much smaller Cornell contingent in Albany in '10 than in Providence in '03.

So if you can, get there - the team needs your support and I don't want to just listen to Michigan fans do all our cheers.

The Resch Center website shows that single game tickets will be available tomorrow (3/19) - in case you want to leave if we don't advance. Two game packages are currently available. Tickets through the schools have been two day packages in the past - not sure about this year.

I cannot speak to the crowds in Providence in '03, but I do know that there were a lot of conflicts during our series in Albany in 2010. I believe that was the same weekend that bball was playing in the Sweet Sixteen in Syracuse. And students may not have wanted to spend both weekends of their spring break in Albany, NY.

I may not go this year, but everyone should plan for next year. Regionals are Providence, Manchester, Toledo, and Grand Rapids. The Frozen Four is in Pittsburgh. All reasonable drives. It's too bad one of Toledo or Grand Rapids coudn't have been this year.

Five reasons why this seems to be a calm thread with no whining about why we're not placed in Bridgeport:

1. This was a rebuilding year
2. We don't have Brian Ferlin (though did Barry Melrose & Co. on the selection show make a present-tense reference to Ferlin?)
3. We were lucky to squeeze into the NCAAs at all
4. If we have to play a 1-seed, we match up reasonably well with Michigan
5. This could be a prelude to a Thanksgiving 2012 game at Madison Square Garden

1) Agreed
2) Yes
3) If we took care of business we could have been a 2 or a 3, so I'm not sure I'd call it lucky, but a fair amount of events did break our way.
4) Also agreed
5) Can't wait for either. Hopefully Michigan will be wanting revenge.

That, plus there were different expectations of the 2003 and 2010 teams. We were quite good in 2010, and won the ECAC tournament as a #2 seed, but 2003 was a Team of Destiny™ packed with ridiculous talent.

Add to that the fact that our 2010 first-round game against UNH was a Friday, and you might have actually gotten significantly better crowds for a Cornell vs. RIT regional final on Saturday. By contrast, 2003 vs. Minnesota State and Boston College were Saturday and Sunday respectively, so it was easier for people to attend both without taking a day off.

If you want to tour Lambeau Field, make reservations in advance. IIRC, tour tickets sold out in 2006 (as did that regional due to Wisconsin being there). There is a restaurant/bar in Lambeau where we hung out before the regional final and watched the other hockey games in progress. It is walking distance to the arena and there is quite a bit of cool packer stuff to look at in the Lambeau atrium.

2. It's pretty sad that ESPN didn't even know that Ferlin was out, and mentioned him as a strength going into the tournament.
3. You could just as easily say we were unlucky to be a 4 seed. Take away that quick whistle in the BU game and give us that win and we'd be #7 in PWR, everything else remaining the same.

Also, the night before Cornell played in Syracuse against Kentucky in the Sweet 16. That might have depressed attendance at the 2010 NCAA Regional in Albany. I know that I could not budget in as a student the ability to attend both. I remember vividly people leaving the Carrier Dome in Syracuse hoping that if they chose to spend the money on tickets to the Regional in Albany that our hockey team would not disappoint the next day. Sadly, the were even more disappointed the next day.

Or take away the 5x3 in the first period and the game would have been quite different (for or against us as BU would have been more aggressive had the first period ended 0-0).

Whatever obscene amount we paid for the Cornell-Kentucky Sweet Sixteen ticket ($80? $160? ... because I had to buy both days?) was worth it because this was a train that's not going to stop at Ithaca Station again for a long time. For Cornell students, how lucky can you get to have one of the four sites an hour away?

$160, if I recall (I might be wrong), but it was worth it. I know with the amount I had to weigh seeing my senior year's team play in the NCAA East Regional or the Sweet 16, because I couldn't afford both. I went with the latter. No regrets. I had seen Cornell win its twelfth ECAC Championship the weekend before in Albany, so I felt less guilty about opting out of the East Regional that year.

Doesn't do me any good here in London.

But it is on ESPNU, so if you have a proxy or VPN...
Theoretically, you could get yourself a VPS in the US and set up a tunnel using OpenVPN to make it look like your computer is in the US. Theoretically. :-)

If I'm not mistaken, I think the problem for Ben isn't the ability to access the online feed, but rather that a 9 pm est start time means a 1 am start time in London (although Ben doesn't sleep, so I don't know what he's complaining about. I've had conversations with him at 1 am est, 6 am gmt).

Dear Hockey Gods,
Friday is my birthday. Please let me enjoy it. Thanks. Love you! -judy

Note to Hockey Gods: Judy also likes to enjoy the day after her birthday.

(Hockey Gods can be quite literal, you know. 9pm start, maybe an overtime or two...)

Why don't we make it "I'd like to have a great birthday and the next 3.5-4 weeks?" That should cover it, right?

5. This could be a prelude to a Thanksgiving 2012 game at Madison Square Garden

Also, we have the chance to avenge the 1991 loss.

Are there any Michigan-specific chants/taunt that the Faithful have coined during our six games against Michigan for the less important event on Judy's birthday? They will be good both for Green Bay and The Garden (fingers crossed).

Our Pep Band has played the Michigan fight song for Notre Dame in the past. I would expect that to be reversed at Green Bay. More importantly, is the Pep Band trip being organized?
As far as cheers, I expect our contingent to be very small. Mostly we'll need to make sure the Big Red know we are there. If we do any taunting cheers, the Michigan fans will likely think we're doing Michigan cheers anyway, since we taught them how to cheer. CCHA droputs?

Actually, the whole "play the rival fight song" thing began at the famous 1991 NCAA series at Michigan. I happen to know the guy who was the Pep Band's Head Manager back then. The way I remember him telling it was that the day after the Game 1 comeback victory, they were hanging around in Ann Arbor, bored waiting for the game to start, when some of them wandered into a local music shop. They found an arrangement to Michigan State's fight song and bought it out-of-pocket and played it that night for Game 2. They were nearly booed out of Yost.

Yes, the band will be there.

I like it, but I'm not sure that has quite the requisite zing or sarcasm considering that Michigan admits that they stole them from Cornell in 1991. They laugh about it, acknowledge it, and have screened shirts that read "Michigan Hockey: Cheers invented at Cornell, Perfected at Michigan."

When we played Wisconsin in the basketball tournament 2 years ago, a band member arranged the music to the Minnesota fight song. I'm pretty sure the same guy arranged the Wisconsin fight song for the women's game against Minnesota. He is probably going to Green Bay, so I assume we can expect similar shenanigans.

Love that! We could respond to "ugly parents" (what they chant at the opposing team's fans after the opposition scores a goal), "ugly girlfriends." It plays off the intra-Big Ten joke that nine out of ten Big Ten girls are attractive, the tenth goes to Michigan. Most other retorts to that have too many syllables.

I think it would be great if the pep band played Ohio State's Across the Field when Michigan takes the ice when/if Cornell plays Michigan at The Garden, if not Friday. The line "Let's win that old conference now" is most commonly changed to "let's beat Michigan now."

Maybe for certain other sports. For football, yeah, few things are better than Michigan-Ohio State. Hockey is different. The fact is that Ohio State and Notre Dame, other than blips in the past decade, have never been good enough to challenge Michigan's regional supremacy in hockey. Michigan State has. There's a reason that those two schools have played to record-setting crowds not once, but twice.

Need further evidence about the hockey rivalry?

Luke Moffatt didn’t mince words when talking about the Michigan hockey team’s rivalry with Michigan State.

“You want to kill them,” the sophomore forward said bluntly on Monday. “You hate them.”

Those sentiments might be a little extreme. But all of the Wolverines take the underlying meaning of Moffatt’s words to heart: the game against the school down the highway is circled in red on the calendar every year. It’s a big deal.

I realize. I am a student currently at a Big Ten institution, so I understand the intraconference rivalries and to which sports they pertain generally. However, the newest generation of Children of Yost, I know a few, state that Michigan State hockey is "more cute than something to loathe." The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry was particularly big back in the 1990s when Cornell played at Yost because it was before that era that Michigan State had dominated the rivalry. Michigan was often embarrassed with hordes from East Lansing being able to sell out Yost and have the Wolverines play before a crowd donned in green. I will agree that Ohio State might not be the wisest choice for hockey because other than when Ryan Kesler was there, Ohio State hockey has been basically irrelevant. Most current Michigan fans forget the recent era in modern hockey history when Michigan State, not Michigan, was the dominant hockey program in the state. My comment was one merely that we should consider the importance that our opponent currently gives to a given rival. Also, is Michigan State's fight song that recognizable? I know to Wolverine ears it will be, but will our fans get the joke?

Well, they do the "goal count" slightly differently than we do, which may give us some opportunity for some hijinx. We go straight from "Davy" into the goal count in-time with the music without prompting. They sit there holding their fingers in the air and wait for the PA goal announcement. Then a single member of the band shouts "Goal Count!" and they all reply with "Ready???" before counting off the goals and going into their version of the sieve-IAYF sequence. An idea to mess with this would be to have several people sitting near the UM band and just start making all sorts of random loud noises (Perhaps a "Let's Go Red!" chant) just as the PA announcement is over. Drown out the cue for them to even start it.

Of course, the ideal situation is for them to never have the opportunity to DO a goal count in the first place. Amiright???

Fair enough. In the end, I trust the band's judgment, because they're the ones who have to play it, and whatever they decide will be sure to get some smiles.

I figured that Cornell's appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the coming game with Michigan deserved my making of another Cornell hockey video. It has a different tone than the ECAC Tournament video that I made.

So, who is going?
Doesn't look like me. My 93 yo mother-in-law is coming. Considering this is my daughter's last year home before college, I think I'm staying here. Don't know how many more ops we'll all get to be together. Hopefully a lot more ops for NCAAs. I'll be at Frozen Four if we're there.

Speaking of that, did others get an email about new procedure for those tickets? We have to watch our email for notation of our chance to purchase. No more sending in credit card and waiting.

I agree with most of your post, although I think that MSU fans took over Yost more in the late 80's than the 90's. By the time I was at Michigan for grad school (95-97), many of us made the trip to Munn and MSU fans had a hard time getting tickets to Yost. Michigan State was loathed and Ohio State was hardly considered for hockey (football was basically the opposite). I remember rabidly cheering for Ohio State when they beat MSU in OT in the regional stage of the 1998 NCAA hockey tourney, I thought that was great.......

The 2-2 tie at Yost in late 1996 or early 1997 was a great game. Michigan averaged something like 6 goals a game but could not get untracked and I think their shot count was far lower than typical. They lost only 4 times that year (2x to MSU in the regular season although we extracted our revenge in the CCHA championship game, barely). Michigan fans still have a hard time accepting that they didn't win it all that year, because they were even better than the '96 team that won it all.

I'm almost over it. Such a good team.

Yost is pretty nice but it's not Lynah.

EDIT - I doubt that the average Cornell fan would know MSU's fight song.

I'd be fine if the hockey gods allowed her to enjoy the entirety of her birthday weekend, Friday-Sunday.
I celebrate Judy's birthday too, if the hockey gods care about that sort of thing.

So, we're all celebrating Judy's birthday.

Are there any Michigan-specific chants/taunt that the Faithful have coined during our six games against Michigan for the less important event on Judy's birthday? They will be good both for Green Bay and The Garden (fingers crossed).
Beyond "Get your own chants"?

We could have used that against Union.

"Start your own chants" would work better there.

I know a version of "The Victors" that would get you thrown out of Lynah. Not sure we want to sing that one tho.

What I associate with Michigan: Mitt Romney, auto bailouts, unemploment, Detroit slums. Maybe a reference to Toyota could piss 'em off.

Good Red, Bad Red.
Good Red, Graying Red.

Still seems a bit subtle. But give it a shot. The Let's Go Red cheers on ESPN NCAA wrestling came through pretty clear. Go for those if the game has quieter moments. Good luck to the faithful in Green Bay.

"You're gonna work for Toyota some day"? Better pacing if you said "the Japs" and let's see how quickly that gets you tossed unless the usher is a WW II Pacific Theater vet. If the Michigan goalie gets chased, we'd be so happy it wouldn't matter what Cornell fans said, but maybe it's not "safety sieve" but "bailout sieve." Michiganders are mighty touchy about how far their auto industry fell even if Ford is world-class now and GM isn't far behind.

Red said that they're leaving Wednesday evening for Green Bay. Know what his concern was? That the kids would be missing two days of school. He's a good guy (other than the occasional DUI/public urination arrest - there's some fodder for a chant, no?) and he'll sit you down if you're not performing academically. I would send my boys to play for him if they don't get into Cornell. ;-)

I checked with the Cornell box office, and the seats they have are in Section 217. That's the same section as we had in Green Bay in '06. Since Cornell only has all session ticket packages, I'm going to hedge my bets and either buy online, where one day tickets are available, or just buy when I get to Green Bay. Right now I'm holding off just because the online seats are coming out in Row D and I'd like to sit higher to get a better perspective on the whole ice. Unlike '06, when the place was full of Wisconsin fans, I expect buying tickets at the box office Friday shouldn't be an issue.

Nonsense. The alternate lyrics to "The Victors" are an absolute must.

Besides, you'll be in Big Ten country but somewhere other than Michigan; no usher is going to throw you out for it because EVERYONE is sick and tired of that song.

At the 1997 West Regional in Grand Rapids (2 regionals, 8 teams at each back then), the CU band got together with the Minnesota band after we sent Mazz's Miami home. Minn was set to play Mich in the QF, and they were impressed when we knew the alternate lyrics. The only difference was that they ended the first verse with "The Cesspool of the East," which gave me a new perspective.

Michigan folks probably think everyone who sings that version are original just as we think people are when they sing the "...there's an awful smell..." version of our Alma Mater.

Actually, it was 2 regionals, 6 teams each back then. No. Dakota and Michigan had first round byes, and Minnesota played Michigan after our 2nd round loss to the Sioux, the eventual NCAA Champions. I remember applauding the Minnesota Pep Band and wishing them luck as they marched in. Not sure I'd do that today after our '05 Mariucci experience.

I agree with you. I think cursing is (almost) never necessary, especially at sporting events. The best chants are the most creative ones and those are rarely ones that have profanity. To quote Stephen Colbert's book I am America (And So Can You!):

Stephen Colbert
A Word on Censorship: The creative class says it's unconstitutional, but I advocate censorship. It's my First Amendment right to do so. They want you to believe censorship hinders creativity. Hogwash. Just the opposite! Take foul language. It's easy for a lazy screenwriter to put the words "fuck you, cocksucker" into a character's mouth, but the artist who translates that phrase for an airing on prime time television or a transcontinental flight is forced to come up with the much more interesting "flip you, cod bucket!" I ask you, which is more "creative"?

You'll hear it less if Michigan doesn't score a whole bunch. They won't count as much, either. It's not that complicated. :-)
