Interesting stat, that I hadn't thought about, mentioned in the ECAC Team Notes for this weekends games.

All seven players who graduated after playing with the Big Red last season have played professionally this season.

With Scrivens against Tim Thomas (UVM), it's an ECAC goalie matchup! Cornell got a mention about a minute into the game on NESN (Boston's local coverage).

Not many highlights are going to come from this game, Scrivens pulled with the Bruins up 5-0 in the 2nd.

Scrivens gets yanked with 4:45 left in the 2nd -- Bruins are up 5-0. A couple of those were Scrivens just getting an unlucky night, because Seguin is on fire. But he also let one in 5-hole that was a bit questionable, and the fifth goal was basically from a bad rebound. The first goal of the night was on a PP where you can't really blame Scrivens, though I have seen goalies make that kind of a save on a good night.

Scrivens played in the Leafs 5-1 loss against Florida on Tuesday. Gustavsson was pulled at 36:47 after giving up the second and third Florida goals 19 seconds apart. Scrivens let in two goals on seven shots.

Scrivens won in a shoot out victory 3-2 tonight.

Scrivens had a great game tonight against St. Louis and Toronto gets the OT shoot-out win. Scrivens was really the only reason this game went to overtime and was voted player of the game by the St. Louis announcers. Overall, I was incredibly impressed and would keep an eye out for videos of the shoot-out later tonight. Scrivens didn't let any in and also it appears that he has a Cornell sticker on the back of his Maple Leafs helmet. Way to bounce back from a tough game against Boston, and relief effort against Florida. Hopefully, he will see some more time with Reimer still out.

And O'Byrne, who is -1 on the season. Not too shabby for a team that's -4 (the Avalanche)

I bought tickets to tonight's game once I found out Scrivens was starting. Ben looked really shaky in the first period. A lot of juicy rebounds right in front of the net, and some times when he didn't quite look sure what to do with the puck. But, he settled down nicely in the 2nd and 3rd. I think the Leafs were outshot something like 30-8 over the last two periods. A lot of pressure on Scrivens and he came up with the big saves. The Blues also missed a few open nets. It was cool to hear the Blues fans around me make comments about how well Scrivens was playing.

"Wilson said Scrivens is playing well, although he expects there to be a learning curve as he adjusts to the NHL.

"He's a talented athlete," Wilson said. "What he's got to go through is the experience of playing in this kind of market, dealing with the sudden fame and attention. That's hard to deal with if you're (used to) Cornell, where not a heck of a lot is going on. ... This is entirely different.

"There's no school you go to how to handle a crush of media and attention. You can't go anywhere and get that."

Random thought, if this game goes to a shoot-out, I wonder if Colin Greening will be able to make a case for being one of the first 3 shooters. You figure with all the practices they had at Cornell, he should know how to beat Ben.

I was referring to the article in the Toronto Sun, not the game day, but I acknowledge the ambiguity!

Scrivens stopped 19 of 22; two Ottawa goals were empty net and one was a 5 on 3 powerplay.
Greening was on the ice for one of the late goals, but did not factor in the scoring otherwise.

I've always thought guys who leave early either are (or th9ink they are) ready for their next challenge and as such might not be the best mix with kids still developing their skills. My only real data point was Nieuwendyk's junior year in 1987, where he skated circles (o0ften, literally) around the rest of the team, usually with no way of harmonizing him with them. When they go, it's probably always time to go.

Agreed. Yes, it's "early" in the NCAA eligibility sense. But he did finish school, which is the real goalpost for student athletes. Ok, only in theory. Stop your laughing.

I have no problem with Garman walking away with his piece of paper early... More power to him for that. I do find it Humorous that he thought the grass was greener on the other side after only 18 game starts at the D1 level. Not all that seasoned for a 24 year old trying to jump to a pro level. He had the chance to return and share the glory but let his ego get the better of him. And as for the mention of the "Signing Bonus" pointed out above... This was the ECHL... where your signing bonus might consist of a few thousand $ but definitely nothing lucrative. And making 400$ per week in the ECHL is peanuts compared to the chance to play one more season in front of the Faithful.

Scrivens is the example for young players to follow... use your 4 years to better yourself and grow the rewards will be far more beneficial in the long run.

To be fair to him, I can readily see an athlete trying to challenge himself by moving up to the highest level of competition he can get to, and even admire it (despite it getting in the way of our plans for Cornell World Domination).

It wasn't his ego at all that led him to go pro, I don't think. I believe he thought that if he wanted to have any chance of going pro, playing 16 or so games at the college level as a 25-year-old was not the way to go; it was now or never. I don't really think he expected his pro career to be a huge success--he just wanted to give it a shot, knowing that his chance of playing professional hockey was passing him by.

Watched Scrivens in the PHX-TOR game (first hockey benefit I've gotten living in PHX...) I missed the first period when Scrivens gave up the two goals, so I'm not sure how he was for those. In the 2nd, 3rd, and OT I thought he looked really good. Made several good saves down the stretch to keep the Leafs in it. Stopped 33 of 35 shots. Didn't do so hot in the shootout (0 for 2) as PHX won, but I thought overall it was a good performance by him. Certainly looked like a capable NHL goalie.

He has 6 games so far with 2.92 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Not bad when you consider most of the damage to those stats was done in 2 outlier games (one where he came in relief and only faced 7 shots) and hes been solid every other time out, one time being excellent. So yeah he's got a good looking future in the NHL.

Looks like Garman's getting another opportunity. Best of luck Mike in the CHL.

Mixed night for our boys: goals for Greening and Moulson, but Scrivens gave up 3 goals on 21 shots against Nashville.

Matt has quietly climbed back into his accustomed "more than anyone not named Taveras" spot in Islander goal scoring. He has also scored in three straight games.

Scrivens gets the start against Carolina and makes 38 saves....but it's not enough as the Leafs lose 3-2.

Just saw the highlights on NHL Network. He made some phenomenal stops, but seemed to get little help from his mates.

Guess I should have watched Van v. Ott instead of that debacle from the Meadowlands. Greening got the game tying early in the 3rd, and the game is headed to OT tied at 1.

While not "pro," I was flipping through a recent Sports Illustrated (which I didn't subscribe to, but still get for some reason), and there was a story on the debate about paying college athletes. The introductory page of the story featured a collage of student-athletes from many different sports. Nestled in there was a CU men's hockey player. Based on the uniform number (#11), the 50-year anniversary ECAC patch, and that the letter "K" is visible on his back, it's easy to deduce that it's Vince Mihalek.

Greening was interviewed on SportsNet's Hockey Central at Noon yesterday (Tuesday). Link to the show podcast (the interview starts after about 30 minutes).
