Yo, so, I'm putting the finishing touches on the Dougie Murray's national anthem tonight (for pepband). Should there be (IE, there should be) some form of word of mouth, or other general passing of information if people want to actually try to sing the blasted thing? And not certain if Arthur actually reads stuff here or just posts interesting sides, but yeah, I'll talk to him on Friday to make sure it gets announced or what-have-you.

Also, someone should arrange to have a Sweedish flag. We've got a giant flag pole (ala the traditional college flags) in the bandroom should the two need to be brought together in a triumphant union of flag and pole for Saturday.

Go me.

Huhuh. There's a giant pole in the band room. Huhuh. nut

In all seriousness, though, you're so the man for putting in the time to arrange this. Thanks. B-]

When will this be sung - Saturday? Also, where could we find the words to it?

Yes, Saturday was the plan, and yes, like our national anthem, I think sticking to just the first verse is a good idea. No, I can't pronounce any of it.

Errrrmm... realistically, if we can't pronounce any of it, wouldn't it maybe be a better idea not to try to sing it?

Finally I can contribute something to this forum, I sit in K and wave my small Swedish flag when Doug scores...

Here is my phonetic translation of the first verse:

Doo gamla, doo freeya, doo fyell hooga nord,

Doo tista, doo gledyea-reeka shoewna

Yag helsar day, venastay land oop oh yord

Deen soul, Deen himmel, deena engder groewna

All "g's" are hard, like in GOAL. Let's try to do it for Dougie!

Toni:
You will have to sing it for Rebecca and me (and I thought the French version of the Canadian National Anthem was hard...) :-)
Wish you were at Lynah East last Saturday. You would have enjoyed the crowd (and felt the collective tension when Hahvahd scored that third goal off a rebound). Next year, I shall remember to bring antacid in addition to cough drops!

wait but whouldn't it sound better if you just played the tune without the words? because if everyone is singing it differently because they don't know how to pronounce it, it's gunna sound crappy. hmmm...just my .02. are you going to have words printed and passed around?

We could try the English version, although less authentic, it might not be as messy:
Translation
Thou Ancient, Thou Free

You ancient, free and mountainous North,

Of quiet, joyful beauty,

I greet you, loveliest land on earth,

Your sun, your sky, your green meadows.

Your sun, your sky, your green meadows.

You are throned on memories of olden days

When the honour of your name spread over the earth.

I know that you are and will remain what you were.

Oh, may I live, may die in the Nordic North!

Oh, may I live, may die in the Nordic North!

Click here to here the anthem: [freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com]
i couldn't find a site that had the words singing.

You can find the rock version of "Du Gamla Du Fria" on Kazaa. It was performed by Ultima Thule. They start singing after 1 minute of guitar.

DEFINITELY sing the words! This should be an en masse thank you to Doug. It absolutely does not matter if it sounds crappy -- it's the participation that counts!

Has the Doug Murray Fan Club not been in attendance this year?

I noticed 2 Swedish flags at the rink during the most recent home weekend. One was at the bottom of Section N (or thereabouts) and one was somewhere behind the goal (Section F?). I guess I missed the one in Section K (sorry Toni).

Any chance of getting the words on the scoreboard display?

Are the Alma Maters copied yet?

(Edit: Because maybe they could be printed on the same sheets and distributed before the game instead of during. Or at least all distributed together at the same time.)

Last time I check in the band-room office, there were stacks upon stacks upon stacks of printed copies of the Alma verses... someone may have eaten them though

Well, fellow faithful; after listening to six 25 sec. replays of this tune, I concluded that each of us has a better chance of broad-jumping the gorge than memorizing the melody, not to mention the lyrics!
