It can be awfully tough for even good goaltenders to crack the NHL. For example, most would have predicted Al Montoya to have made it by now, but that hasn't panned out.

And he had another going toward an empty net that was knocked out of the air by a Flyers' D-man. Good game by Matt. The Isles outplayed the Flyers (except for Bobrovsky) for 2 periods.

Thanks to Yahoo Sports adding content to their stats webpages, I can tell you that he also leads the Sharks in hits (28) and blocked shots (19). Also, for a physical defenseman without great speed, just 4 minors through 12 games seems very impressive.

In Binghamton, Greening is playing on the top line with Bobby Butler. Lots of quotes in the article.

He's big, he's strong, he competes, he works, he's a great first man in on the forecheck. He really elevated both Corey's and Bobby's games. Added Greening, "Locke is just so skilled with the puck, and he's able to find guys and make plays, then Bobby's just a natural scorer, so I think how I complement them is by getting the puck back to them. I'm able to force turnovers on the forecheck and make the defense cough up the puck so I can get the puck to those guys, and once they get the puck, they can obviously make plays with it."

Nice article about Greening. A lot of familiar names (some of which I would like to forget). I seem to vaguely recall Kurt Kleinendorst from his playing days at Providence.

The injury-depleted Colorado Avalanche acquired defenseman Ryan O'Byrne from the Montreal Canadiens Thursday in exchange for prospect Michael Bournival.

O'Byrne, 26, had appeared in only three games for the Canadiens this season. The 6-foot-5, 234-pound defenseman was Montreal's third-round pick (79th overall) in the 2003 entry draft.

He played in in a career-high 55 games last season (four points) and 13 of Montreal's 19 games during its surprising playoff run.

"Ryan is another young defenseman who will add size and depth to our team," Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said in a team statement.

San Jose won 2-1 in a shootout; nothing on the board for either. Moulson (17:07) was among the 5 Islanders who were +1, Murray (20:31) was among the 5 Sharks who were -1.

O'Byrne will presumably have his Avalanche debut tonight in Columbus. Good seats are still available. The 'Lanche website shows him wearing 3 at least until Colorado retires Émile Bouchard's number.

Indicating that he was on the ice for 2 of Colorado's goals since he got beat on the Columbus goal in the first period.

I caught bits and pieces of the Colorado pre-game interviews and they had a lot of nice things to say about OB. Coach Joe Sacco said that they really wanted to work on Ryan's confidence since he hasn't had much playing time at all this season. 25 minutes of ice time and playing solidly after a rough start to the game should help with that.

Ryan O'Byrne had 2/3 of a Gordie Howe Hat Trick last night in the Avs' 6-3 win against St. Louis, with an assist and a fight. He was also a +3 on the night.

From the ECHL transaction page, Doug Krantz is still playing and has been traded from Cincinnati to Toledo.

Michael Kennedy is still with the Florida Everblades and has 1G, 4A and is a +2. The Everblades are hosting Toledo this weekend.

My trips to Estero this fall have not been in sync with the Everblades home games.

The defense attorney's statement, "With so many not guiltys, I can't imagine them trying it again now,' seems believable to me but I don't know if that necessarily follows in practice. No comment from the DA's office.

Who knows. A guy I went to law school with was arrested for conspiracy to import cocaine the day before the bar (he made bail and passed...). He got the same 11-1 to acquit hung jury; the DA retried, disproved his alibi in the interim, and got a conviction (so much for passing the bar...). Not that the situations are totally parallel, but I'm sure both sides learned something about the trial and the retrial won't necessarily be a note-for-note remake.

On a brighter note, Ben Scrivens recorded 33 saves for his first AHL victory tonight, as the Toronto Marlies defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3 in a shootout.

Hamilton was also in Rochester on Friday, and Brendon Nash was in his first professional fight.

B-Sens First Quarter Grades:

#15 Colin Greening, A. He is basically Chris Kelly with more size and less speed. He's a little older than some other prospects after spending time at Cornell, but the NHL could be in his future if he continues along this path. He's as honest a player as there is and a tremendous human being off of the playing surface. He's found a home playing with Butler and Corey Locke and they are thankful to have him creating space and winning battles along the half-walls.

The biggest surprise for me is that Colin Greening has been playing as well as he had. He's been inserted on the top line with Locke and Butler and the coach can't stop talking about how smart a player he is. He's basically a bigger Chris Kelly with a little less speed.

Given that he's an ECHL callup he's likely the 2nd goaltender in Toronto, and LeNeveu's the #1 in Springfield (Blues affiliate). So at least he's not "the" and some would argue that Lenny's higher.

Ugarte's right that a retrial might allow the prosecution to regroup and possibly turn the case around, in this case working on coherency of the complainant's statement. But an 11-1 vote to acquit is a lot different from an even split and suggests problems with the case or with the prosecutor. The complainant might also decide she doesn't want to go through the torment of preparing for trial and to some extent being on trial. Based on my long ago experience covering courts, I'm guessing the DA's office will take it under advisement for as long as it can and then in hopes it's less in public view and drop charges.

Agreed. I think they meant "they run the AC 24/7 regardless of how much it costs, regardless of whether they are home or not" and possibly "even if other people wanted the AC turned off." (Like Albert Belle, who set the thermostat in the Indians locker room. When someone moved it, he moved it back and then took a bat to it so it couldn't be changed again.)
