A mere 4 ECAC schools receiving votes. Must be expecting a down year. However, this is the poll where they rank only 1/4 of the schools in the country whereas the other ranks 1/3.

Probably, but it says something that even in a year when we are not so much rebuilding as starting from scratch, we still get the benefit of the doubt.

Well, maybe what it says is the voters just copy down last March's top 10 and move their favorites up a couple slots. But it's gratifying anyway.

For comparison, the history of our ranking since 1995. Oct. 6 1997 and Oct. 2 2006 could be comparable starting points.

I just hope people aren't going apeshit by January if we're around .500 in conference, saying "this is a top 10 team, why are we so mediocre!?" This is probably one of the least experienced teams in the last 20 years when talking about guys in major roles returning. This should be a fun year discovering what we have to look forward to 2-3 years down the road, not a year of constantly smashing our heads against the wall because they haven't already arrived.

Exactly, look at Michigan at #4. Great history but they barely made the NCAA tourney last year - they had to win the CCHA tourney after a lousy overall season.

But of course the coaches and media pick them and Miami 1-2 in CCHA. Looking at who they have coming back, I'd give Mich a lot more chance than us.

Why: Where will the offense come from? How close can the new goalies come to filling Scrivens’ sizable shoes? But that said, this is Cornell: “Mediocre” isn’t in the vocabulary.

I agree that the question of the day is where will the offense come from. My observation is that the game has become faster with more of a premium on speed and skill. The contrast with Yale last year could not have been clearer.

I take it as a given that we will continue to be beasts when our defense is set up but I thought we had a lot of trouble in transition and moving the puck through the neutral zone last year. Perhaps those with better credentials than mine can comment on where the offense will come from.

I think we'll be relying on a lot of "grinder" type goals from guys like J. Devin and Collins. You have to hope that our more "high skill" guys -- think Esposito, Jillson and Roeszler -- will be able to continue the improvement that they showed toward the end of last season.

Given the depth on defense that we seem to have with Gotovets and Brisson being added to our returning group, I wouldn't be surprised to see Whitney get a fair amount of time at forward to add some scoring punch.

New starting goalie is most likely Garman, not Iles unless there's a need - I heard this from a player. We'll still have to wait and see how Mike performs under pressure, but he was able to hold the line last year when Scrivens broke, so I have a lot of confidence in him.

As to the offense, we'll just have to wait and see as well. These pre-season polls mean very little anyways.

USCHO Poll
 1. Yale (up from 2)
13. Union

Also getting votes: Clarkson, Princeton.

Cornell women remain #1 with 142 points and 8 firsts to 139 and 7 first for Wisconsin.

USA Today / Coaches' Poll
1. Yale
6. Maine
8. Miami
13. Union

All true but I think this year I'm buying tickets in advance. It took 20 minutes to scrounge up 2 outside Ingalls last year, although one turned out to be free (the advantage of wearing a Cornell jersey).

Anyway I think Yale is a placeholder for someone out West who goes on a December-early January tear.

As expected when I saw Al's post: a lot of fans with limited access to spell/grammar-checking who are upset that their teams aren't #1. Unspoken is the greater annoyance that not only will these Ivy League twits rise to control the business world upon graduation, but now they're atop the college world, too.

A couple lucid posts such as this:
redgopher
Mr. Weasel, don't be to quick to make that assumption [Yale #1 only b/c of soft schedule] until you have seen Yale Play, I grew up watching hockey in Minnesota, and this Yale Team is one of the strongest Offensively skilled teams I have seen in the last 45 years of watching college hockey. I don't know what your experience is, but I have been to alot of college games and have seen alot of hockey over the years.

Here's a quote from Trotsky on September 28: "I just hope people aren't going apeshit by January if we're around .500 in conference, saying "this is a top 10 team, why are we so mediocre!?" This is probably one of the least experienced teams in the last 20 years when talking about guys in major roles returning. This should be a fun year discovering what we have to look forward to 2-3 years down the road, not a year of constantly smashing our heads against the wall because they haven't already arrived."

Two thoughts:

Geez, this guy is scarily prophetic.
Thanks for putting this season into perspective...doesn't make it any easier, though...

Cornell surges with a four-point weekend on the road and the voters apparently want to see more. At least Harvard isn't doing any better. Among ECAC teams:

Jan 10, 2011
1. Yale
10. RPI
14. Union
Also receing votes: Princeton, Dartmouth, Clarkson.

Cornell women remain second behind Wisconsin, with 3 first place votes to the Badgers' 12

Looks like Cornell will host two ranked teams this weekend.

Our near-sweep (excluding the second and third periods of Saturday's game) didn't buy Cornell men even a single vote in either poll but it did knock RPI down about 4 places to the mid-teens. I still say we're the most under-rating team in the bottom half of the rankings. Yale lost but still remained #1.

Women still #2 behind Wisconsin.

I think maybe this link is more instructive about the changes. Basically, they redefined TUC as "team with RPI over .500" rather than "team in the top 25 of RPI" (which I personally didn't remember them ever having changed it to, but that's just because I wasn't paying attention).

One of the polls covers half the D1 teams in the country and we remain without even a single honorable mention vote. Wonder what our previous record is for weeks without a mention?

Women still #2.

I know I'm out on a limb here, but we probably didn't get any votes at all in 93-94.

We're currently 34th in KRACH. USCHO poll has 31 teams with at least one point, USA Today has 20.

These records only go back to 1995. If anybody finds earlier ones, I'd be grateful. There was once a poll conducted by a Minnesota radio (TV?) station, and Don Birkmeier's old newsletter may have had records. Or there's always a library of back issues of IJ waiting for a research job by some enterprising and bored youngster.

Current stretch: 8 polls (from 22 Nov 10)

This is the longest streak in over 10 years. Prior to the streak, Cornell had received at least 1 vote in 223 of the previous 227 poll weeks, including one streak of 153 in a row.

Longest streaks without a point:

16 polls (18 Jan 99 through 15 Nov 99)
15 polls (06 Dec 99 through end of season)
10 polls (02 Mar 98 through 09 Nov 98)

The streak of 28 polls from 13 Oct 95 through 11 Nov 96 was, I believe, restricted to failure to crack the top 10.

Cornell is picking up steam. 5 votes this week in the USCHO Feb, 14 poll, which is the 24th most votes out of 26 teams receiving votes out of ~ 58 D1 schools. Union moves from 9 to 7, RPI falls from 8 to 14. That would of course be the result of the poor officiating rather than Cornell's OT goal Saturday.

USA Today / Hockey Magazine only goes to 15 ranked teams and 4 others getting votes, so we're not on the list there.

North Dakota takes over the top spot. BC second, Yale third. While BC was the unanimous number one last week, four different teams received first place votes this week: UND (21), BC (13), Yale (15), and Merrimack (1). Union is fifth, RPI is 14, Dartmouth is 18. Princeton and Cornell are in the "others receiving votes" category with 33 and 24, respectively.
