The Vermont announcer says he has seen Harvard play many times this season, and he has to pick Cornell next weekend. He can't understand how Cornell could have lost to Colgate last week...

He complains about not being able to hear the announcer, blaming the acoustics in The Lynah Rink. "Maybe it's because of the full house tonight."

Re: Vermont 0 @ Cornell 7 - 3rd period

My guess would be major (fight), minor (instigation), misconduct, game DQ = 5 + 2 + 10 + 10 = 27 minutes, just short of Rob LeVasseur's record.

Nope, he only got the 5 + 10. It's a game DQ, his second of the season, so my reading of the rule is he'll miss both games next weekend.

Final:

Cornell 8, UVM 1.

Not a bad weekend, outscoring the opposition 14-2. CU Outshot them 41 - 19.

So, we're now 19-4-0...I guess I can handle that. :)

Greg. you sure about this being Hornby's 2nd? There was some debate about that on the chat tonight. Some thought he had a game misconduct earlier in the season, not a DQ.

Re: Vermont 1 @ Cornell 8 - FINAL
Posted by: kingpin248 (---)
Date: February 08, 2003 09:36PM

Hornby took a misconduct (along with two minors) at the end of the second BU game. He also had a game misconduct early in the first Colgate game. I haven't been able to find a game DQ for him in the box scores.

Re: Vermont 1 @ Cornell 8 - FINAL
Posted by: jkn2 '97 (---)
Date: February 08, 2003 09:39PM

According to the season statistic (before tonight) Hornby had 24 penalties for 75 minutes which I believe works out to be 20 - 2 min minors, 1 - 5 min major, and 3 - 10 minutes of some sort. Then looking at the box scores: Hornby had misconducts in the second BU game, the Clarkson at Lynah game, and the Colgate Away game. So I don't think that he has had a DQ this season.

The Hornby fight was absolutely incredible; he dropped his gloves, pulled the Vermont player's jersey over his head, and started throwing rights and lefts like a mad man. He went absolutely nuts....it was great. :-)

Who could have ever expected the "Good Goalie - Bad Goalie - Janet Reno" cheer?

I sat about 5 rows in front of her. She was there early, and stayed through the salute at the end. She seemed to have a great time.

The Red looked very motivated and kept moving all the time through both games this weekend. The freshmen poured on the points against DC, and the seniors came on VERY strong against UVM. I hope they can keep things rolling this well for the next two months.

Btw, for all you in A & B, was goal #3 an own goal? From section E it looked like a UVM guy moderately shot the puck towards his own net. It may have bounced around before being put it, but it looked like he virtually took a shot... did my eyes deceive me from ~ 200 feet away? or was something amiss?

I hope it was only Greg's 1st DQ -- Adam originally said it was a second DQ although not for fighting, but I think in retrospect he meant a GameMisc and not a DQ.

We could use him for Harvard, anyway.

What the heck started the fight?

IIRC, nothing. There wasn't anything apparent directly before they went at it. There were probably a bunch of little things that led up to Greg beating the living hell out of the poor kid:-P BTW, the UVM player only got a minor b/c the two linesmen were holding him down while Greg went to town with at least ten solid rights!

Normally, I like Hornby's agressive spirit, but getting himself suspended for a game against a not-to-be-ignored Brown team is just dumb, especially considering what happened the last time he missed most of a game. I see no reason to celebrate that.

Re: H-O-R-N-B-Y!!!!!
Posted by: Jim Hyla (---)
Date: February 09, 2003 10:55AM

Agree, it was dumb, unless the UVM player had done something very obnoxious that we don't know about.

Gleed's penalty at the end was also dumb. He had the UVM player completely dismantled and just kept going till he had him down on the ice. No need for that at that stage of the game. Considering it led to their only goal, I don't think it will happen again. A learning experience, but Hornby, I don't know. Maybe he has an explanation.

Re: Vermont 1 @ Cornell 8 - FINAL
Posted by: DeltaOne81 (---)
Date: February 09, 2003 12:15PM

My opinion is that the UVM players started working on Hornby towards the end of the game. Grabbing his, cheap shots, etc. Although I didn't see the start of the fight, someone with me said they did, and he said that Hornby laid a clean hit on the guy,and the guy returned with a cheap shot, which, after several of those, probably just pissed him off. You'd like to see him keep his cool better than that, but at least it appeared to have been provoked.

So, I don't think this is important enough for a new thread, but since we're talking about the game...

I started my own new 'tradition' this weekend, in what might not be a total vain attempt to counteract the elongated "diiiiiie". The point was brought up that you can't counteract noise with silence, but you can with noise. I was in a roudy mood Friday, after all the yelling at our good friend Nicky, so about half way through elongated travesty, I just yelled "SHUT UP!" About half the people (give or take), stopped right then. Emboldened by my success I did it again last night, and again, about half the people stopped. I even got a 'thank you' from the person in from of me who agreed it was horrid.

So, my questions for the group are, a) is this a good idea to continue, hopefully only for a few games until people get the picture, and b) anyone wanna do it in a, b, d, f, and g? :-)

I hate for this 'diiiie' to be the legacy of my year. I also think I've helped bring back the 'sweep', 'chug', and 'tap' to the remote-control cheer. Though I dunno if it's a majority of people, there's definitely a number of people actually doing that now. I knew Walsh would be very helpful in bringing it back :-D.

great game.
i thought that the third goal was not an own goal. just a shot and rebound --> goal. but i may be confusing it with another goal

as for hornby, the uvm skater cross checked him high after hornby hit him cleanly and then said something (i was right on the other side of the glass), they started chatting then wrestling then hornby took off the gloves after the uvm guy hit him with the gloves on...it was a brawl after that.

i cant believe that i left my nasty CU hockey hat in the car friday night and didnt get to throw it...then palahicky had some good chances for a hatty late in the game saturday. i need to get rid of this nasty hat ;-)

I think it's time for Schafer to consider sitting Hornby for a while -- he HAS to learn to control his temper. I know he's a real fireplug on the boards and plays with alot of energy, but if he does what he did at Colgate or last night in the playoffs it could very easily cost us the game.

Richard & JTW,

I disagree 100%. . .coach has made it clear (as have others on the team ) that is his role on the team and I do not see coach not playing him whenever he's able to dress. Does he take some stupid penalties, oh yeah. Does his intense play help the team, of course. Does he get some extra attention from the referees and therefore a few undeserved penalties, Yup. The bottom line here is that he's doing what he is told or else why would he keep putting on his skates night after night. If coach and the team thought he was more a problem than a plus, I have a feeling we wouldn't even know the kids name. I have been told by more than a few guys on the team that they (the men's hockey team) see Greg as the most valuable player that will not show up on the score sheet (actually scoring goals, that is;-) )

If jy3 is correct then the fight may well have been justified. If you've ever been cross-checked in the chest (or higher) you'll understand just how much it hurts. IIRC, the incident v. Brown earlier in the year when Matt McRae took a cheap shot cross-check up high, most, if not all people saw his reaction as justified. . .so why are people treating this any differently? If you're gonna judge the actions of the team, use a single standard, don't treat one any different than the others.

BTW, the fighting penalties would have been off-setting if not for the two linesmen holding Sifers on the ice. It's probably a safe bet he would've liked nothing more than to throw a few in Hornby's direction.

just my $.02 ;-)

Rock Paper Scissor?
Posted by: curoadkill (---)
Date: February 11, 2003 04:10PM

I meant to post this story a while ago, but I wonder if anyone else caught the scene at the end of warmups on Saturday?

So, as you may have noticed, Pegararo seems to be "the guy" who is last off the ice at the end of warmups. He'll wait until the whole Cornell team and the opposing team is off the ice before stepping off. Well on Saturday, he cordially gestured to the Vermont player who was last off that he should get off first. The UVM player insisted Dan get off first. (I believe this ritual created matching minors for delay last season)
Neither played would leave. I remember once in the past when Krys Wieckowski onece psyched someone out by leaving the ice and then jumping back on quicly when no one was looking... but I digress.
So Pegararo took off one of his gloves and challenged the UVM player to rock paper scissor. I think it was best two of three. Dan went rock twice and lost. He shrugged his shoulders and went into the locker room leaving the UVM player to leave the ice last.

Am I the only one who thinks this is really funny?

Meanwhile, Hornby went rock twice later that night and won, but still had to leave the ice...

If that's true, it is hilarious.

I noticed Pegoraro was the last to leave the ice after every period at RIP... ahh, superstitions. What would sports be without them? Of course, if I believed mine I would never get to go to another game again. :-(

It's absolutely true. I was standing down in the corner shooting, and noticed the tail end of it. Just missed getting a shot, but it definitely happened. I wasn't sure if it was rock, paper, scissors or odds/evens. Thanks for clarifying Chris =]

I too saw the Rock-Paper-Scissors battle and cracked up! I believe it was actually two rocks and a scissor thrown by Pegoraro (not that it matters). Very neat/entertaining to see nonetheless :-)

So, given the thumping Cornell put on Vermont Saturday night, and given the way these "routines" usually work, I wonder if Dan will try very hard to be the second-to-last player to leave the ice from now on...

Speaking of routines, has anyone noticed the Abbott brothers. During both the Canadian and US anthems, they stand dead still. I'm talking millitary-style, not moving, nothing. It kinda's freaks me out.

Also, have you ever wondered what's going through lenny's head when he's crouched over before the starting line-ups are announced. What I'd pay to hear an inner monologue.

I enjoy looking for these quirks.

And here I thought this was going to be a question about PairWise Comparisons to which the answer is "rank the three teams by RPI".

I could only imagine what Underhill's inner monologue must've been like.

I'm not sure that I understand what the finger position is on "lizard". Looks a lot like paper.

I think it might be thumb in versus flush, or the hand might be curled for lizard. I've never played, only seen it on the web.

I hate how the NYTimes makes you sign up to read articles online. Do I just accept that I'm going to receive 200 pieces of spam every day?
