I had to create this thread just to say that Matt Moulson just scored one helluva goal. Nothing fancy, per se, but he blistered a shot from near the top of the circle and just perfectly picked a corner. It was about as good a shot as you'll see.

Clearly Matt plays well when Adam W. provides us with play-by-play. He's scored his second of the night :)

Make it a hat trick for Moulson on a nice redirect off the heel of the stick.

And lemme tell ya - that's about as textbook a 3 goals you can get ...
1) as good a rifle slapper you'll ever see
2) a beautiful shake and bake move on the goaltender, 1-on-1
3) a textbook deflection of a point slapper while standing at the top of the crease

It's been like watching an instructional video for playing forward

Nice job Matt, 3 very pretty goals. bananabananabanana

Continuing with the theme of another thread.... When was the last time a Cornellian scored and NHL hat trick?

My guess would be Joe Nieuwendyk. I tried a quick google search and found this link to 1997-1998 NHL hat tricks , but nothing more recent. Did Joe have a hat trick or two with the Devils?

I also found a Sports Illustrated article from Joey's rookie year with the Flames. I think Matt has had too many cups of coffee in the NHL and probably is not considered a rookie.

The requirements for The Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year are
NHL.com
To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. The player must not be older than 26 years before September 15 of the season in which he is eligible.

You are correct, he is not qualified for the Calder:

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. The player must not be older than 26 years before September 15 of the season in which he is eligible.

He played 22 NHL games in 07-08 and 7 games in 08-09.

EDIT: Bah, beat me by a minute!

It would be nice if ESPN could update Matt's photo. :-| Purple and black, those be LA Kings/Manchester Monarch colors. You would think that over the past 2 months they would have gotten a photo of him in an Islander jersey.

Ryan O'Byrne wearing his new #20 is on the ice for Montreal tonight against Bitz and the Bruins.

Does anyone know the reason for this number change. When they gave him #3, I thought it might be an indicator that he is well entrenched in their future plans. Does this change to #20 indicate that his stock has dropped?

There's a nice story on Yahoo Sports.

[Emile] Bouchard, a four-time Stanley Cup champion with Montreal from 1941-56, was then wheeled out onto the red carpet by son Pierre Bouchard, a former Montreal defenseman.

The 91-year-old [Elmer] Lach, the oldest living former Canadiens player, won three Stanley Cups from 1940-54. He joined his former teammate as Canadiens defenseman Ryan O’Byrne presented the 90-year-old Bouchard with a No. 3 banner.

O’Byrne then took off his jersey while the banners were being hoisted to reveal a No. 20 jersey. Lach’s No. 16 was previously retired in honor of Henri Richard, who won a record 11 Stanley Cups and was on hand for the ceremony.

Matt's penalties were right after the TSN commentators gave Matt, Mike Schafer and the Cornell program lots of compliments for developing good, smart hockey players doh.

Matt was on the ice and screened Toskala (sp) when Tavares got the Isles on the board on a 5 v. 3. Isle's to the PP. Score Matt Score.

During last night's Islanders-Leafs game, the announcers mentioned that Schafer was doing a great job of preparing players for the NHL while ensuring that they received a quality education. They talked about how Matt had stayed for four full years and that Chris was there now. Moulson promptly committed a penalty in the offensive zone (in the crease, no less) and Toronto scored on the pp.

Hmmm. Something in the water. O'Byrne picked up a pair of penalties in the third period as the Pens beat the Canadiens 3-2. The Canadiens fought hard the whole game, but were thoroughly outclassed by Pittsburgh, who outshot them 2-1. O'byne's penalties were not dumb, but not really "must take" penalties either - just getting tangled up with the wrong guy at the wrong time while playing hard-nosed defense. He definitely did not distinguish himself, but he did look like he belonged on the ice, so that's a good thing!

So nice to see live hockey again!

Fun moment in the middle of the first, with Blitz with a hard, clean check on Moulson behind the Bruins' net. The Boston PBP guy (not Andy Brickley, the other one) commented that it was a collision of two Cornell players. Bitz had a couple great chances late in the period including an open net, but went wide, hurried by defenders.

Not good news for Bitzy.

Bruins Blog
Looks like the Byron Bitz experiment might be over. Bitz couldn't bury a fabulous scoring chance in the first, and didn't have much offensive presence otherwise. Tough to criticize a grinder for not scoring, but as noted before, Bitz doesn't have the finish to have playing time alongside Marc Savard. "We're going to have to do something," Savard said. "Savvy is a guy that should lead our team in points. Somehow you have to get him guys that can put the puck in the net. We have a lot of guys who are not consistent in that area."

I'm almost positive they accidently attributed the quote to Savard when it should be Julien though.

I hope so. I don't regularly follow the Bruins (so don't know how they are perceived by the media), but it would ruin my image of hockey players being basically good, down-to-earth athletes if one of them went "Rickey Henderson".

Hopefully Bitz can get back on a roll with his new linemates. :-P

True, but Savard *is* the kind of arrogant prick who would talk about how he should be leading the team in points in the third person.

O'Byrne just took a hooking call with 1:02 to go on a Devils powerplay. I'll edit the post after they've killed it or the Devils have scored.

And the Habs killed it off unfortunately.

Moulson with an assist on the Islanders 2nd goal to put them up 2-0 on some team with 3 minutes left.

So do we rout for a tie, with Moulson getting the NYI goals and OB staying out of the box? Too bad Matt didn't get any facetime on the HNIC pregame interview with Tavares and Weight. They mentioned his name often enough to earn some camera love.

From the ECAC site
Ask the Sharks: Douglas Murray

The following appeared December 28 on the San Jose Sharks Web site.

Have a question for Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray? Now you'll get the chance to ask it.

Murray will be the next player featured on Ask the Sharks. E-mail your question for the 29-year-old to askthesharks@sjsharks.com and the top ten questions will be chosen for an interview with the Swedish Olympian.
Here's the link to the Sharks. I don't see how you'd get to see/hear the answers.

Good forecheck by Bitz leads to a Hunwick shot from the point that Bitz tips in as he headed back to the front of the net. Not a bad way to end the month (and year).
