Scali's goal is now being credited to Dan Nicholls who apparently deflected it on its way in.

Sicktastic hit early in the first, right by the visitor bench. Did anyone catch who it was? It was probably the sickest hit I've seen in a Cornell game. Ever.

Tied (w/ '66, '68, '69, '97, '03, and '04 teams) for second-earliest (game 7) in a season to turn orange. The earliest years were '67, '70, and '72, when we turned orange by game 5. Mathematically, '70 gives the earliest any team has or can ever turn orange (ditto for turning RED). I've heard we were pretty good back then. **]

It was Mr. Gamewinner himself, Dan "Freight Train" Nicholls.

I haven't seen Clarkson looking this abysmal in my 4 years of watching. This game was a bit of a bore. Although we scored 4 times and had a clear puck possesion advantage, we actually didn't generate the usual amount of offensive chances, evidenced by a shots on goal total of 18. Maybe the team was content to save their energy for tomorrow night and play shut-down hockey with a 3 goal lead, which is completely understandable. Rival #3 St. Lawrence is always fired up to play us at Lynah, and with their destruction of Colgate tonight, it appears we will have a good game on our hands Saturday. It was great to see Mugford back in the lineup. Let's Go Red!

Rival #3 St. Lawrence

Would you really list them ahead of RPI and Colgate (and BU, for that matter) on the list of rivals?

Having watched Cornell hockey for only 4 years, I can't claim to have witnessed too many animosity-forming moments beyond games with Harvard, Clarkson, and Quinnipiac for that matter. The #3 for SLU is just the TBRW opinion.

When was the last time Cornell had brothers each score a goal in the same game and how many times has it happened?

Also, Mike Devin was the player on the ticket for the game against Clarkson. How many times has the player on the ticket scored a goal? I don't keep ticket stubs, but I know some people do.

I doubt anybody's compiled a complete list of every time it's happened, but the last time was Feb. 22, 2008 at Quinnipiac. Cornell 3, Quinnipiac 2 in OT; goals were Sawada, P. Kennedy, M. Kennedy.

Just a quick follow-up explanation... I think one of the reasons it would be challenging to compile such a list (besides the tedium of going over every single box score, assuming one is available for every game Cornell has ever played, which I'm not at all sure about) is that we may not know, prior to the modern era, whether teammates with the same surname were brothers. For instance we know that Steve Wilson and Chad Wilson, who played together in the mid-1990s, weren't brothers - but can we say the same for the Smiths or Joneses of the 1920s?

Not that I don't expect someone will try anyway, I'm just saying. banana

Overall, a pretty great game with the lone Clarkson goal coming after a disputed icing call.

My one disappointment would have to be the addition of a lonely, cheap-looking ad for Shortstop on the side of the Zamboni. I was always proud of the fact that we didn't have ads plastered all over the sides, but this single one looks even worse.

cornell was better than Clarkson in pretty much every facet of the game, end of story.

I would also have no problem with cornell telling the clarkson Pep Band that they aren't welcome at lynah rink next year (I know it won't ever happen). I don't care who it is, when an opposing player is on the ice hurt you should sit/stand there and hope he is okay. When he gets up, you should clap/cheer. nothing more, nothing less. It is NEVER okay to chant "Pussy".

Also, maybe I am getting old but I think that when a whole section (or multiple sections) start chanting "Asshole" or "Bullshit" it is incredibly bush league. Every single one of those losers ought to be thrown out and have there season tickets revoked. And before you take the shot, I hate it even more when it happens at Cheel.

The first time I ever heard the asshole chant in Lynah was my junior year when Nickerson first came to town. I didn't realize that chant has become a regular now.

As for "bullshit," yea, we never used to do the bullshit chant. It used to be just "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I wanna be a ref" and "A rope, a tree, hang the referee." Those were the only two anti-ref cheers, that was it. I think the students adopted the bullshit chant from Starr Rink a few years ago. It might have been in the year that they threw pizza at us (it landed on the only Colgate fan in the Cornell section). Colgate only had two chants: "Bullshit" and "Fuck Cornell." Also, at Starr Rink, it is perfectly ok for the entire student section to flick off the Cornell fans (in public, in front of little kids) and scream all sorts of vulgar insults.

Sorry to disillusion you, Oat, but the "Bullshit" chant - while infrequent at best - has been used in Lynah since at least 1988, and probably well earlier. It's hardly original enough to have "stolen" from any particular opponent.

Devin, I take full responsibility for that. It was a powerplay starting for us, I started Jailhouse, and I didn't see the player down. As soon as we realized it, we tried to stop everyone from finishing the song. Relax.

Also, the asshole chant is one I've not heard (I don't think) in my five years straight at Lynah. We did it (the royal We- I didn't) when the Clarkson band was playing for a full minute while we told them to shut up, as Gallagher was on the ice and not moving. Totally warranted.

Fair enough man, we all make mistakes.

Also, the asshole chant is one I've not heard (I don't think) in my five years straight at Lynah. We did it (the royal We- I didn't) when the Clarkson band was playing for a full minute while we told them to shut up, as Gallagher was on the ice and not moving. Totally warranted.

I am pretty sure that the game was played at Lynah Rink, not Veterans field in philly, so it was still bush league.

Sorry to disillusion you, Oat, but the "Bullshit" chant - while infrequent at best - has been used in Lynah since at least 1988, and probably well earlier. It's hardly original enough to have "stolen" from any particular opponent.

Oh man, I never really heard it until my junior/senior year I guess.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think playing for a full minute while a guy is literally not moving on the ice (not moving- not writing in pain, but not moving) is 100x worse than calling said players assholes.

Agreed, but I firmly believe that both actions are bush league. When considering different events, just because one person is wrong, doesn't mean the other isn't also wrong

Get as mad as you want, nobody is perfect and people make mistakes. I've already apologized for it, can we stop arguing about which is worse and just move on?

It used to be just "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I wanna be a ref" and "A rope, a tree, hang the referee." Those were the only two anti-ref cheers, that was it.

You must be forgetting "The ref beats his wife! The ref beats his wife!"

FWIW, I remember the chant being directed at a Clarkson player during the playoff series a couple of years ago. That's the one that cornell won in two straight double OT games.

Not many games being played at Veterans field these days. But the Gophers vs. the River Rats. might be able to hole up there.

Only if they can burrow through asphalt and concrete. The site of the vet is now a parking lot.

[nitpick]And it's Veterans Stadium, not field. However it's Franklin Field and Lincoln Financial Field along with Citizens Bank Park. And for you old-timers Shibe park, Connie Mack Stadium, and JFK Stadium round out the older, no-longer-with-us, venues.[/nitpick]

Left the playing surface the way it was, then?

Either way, I was getting at the notoriaty surrounding the fans in philly. if I remember correctly (I was young when it happened) they cheered while Michael Irvin lay motionless on the field after an akward head first fall onto the incredibly hard playing surface (asphalt covered with astroturf).

In the interest of fairness, it should be pointed out that Michael Irvin IS a criminal and a giant asshole

Point taken, but he is still a human being.

Idk, maybe I am overly touchy about the subject of injured players, but I have always considered injured players to be "untouchable" when it comes to cheers/jeers.

That's one reason I was glad to see the "Scrape him off the ice!" chant die out at Lynah circa 1990ish.

Even though we lost, that series was some of the best hockey I have ever seen from two goalies. Two amazing games.

Actually the bullshit/ asshole chants go back at least to the late 70's as I recall hearing them both as a much younger Big Red fan.

Jerry Jones does a fine job of insulting his own team all by himself. He doesn't need our help, although it is amusing.
