For anyone making winter travel plans, here's info on a Cornell Hockey vacation destination in the Sunshine State:

Cornell Hockey will be competing in the 9th Everblades Classic Hockey Tournament near Naples, FL again this December.

This year's contenders are Cornell, Maine, Colgate and St. Cloud State.
Games are at 4:05 PM and 7:35 PM each day.

Saturday, December 27: Cornell takes on St. Cloud State at 7:35 PM
Sunday, December 28: Finals at 7:35 PM, Consolation Game at 4:05 PM

Tickets start at $17 per day and include access to both games on one day.

During the games you can meet other Cornellians in the Big Red Hospitality area in the TIB Terrace, above section 115. Cash bar and light refreshments will be served.

We'll be selling Cornell items and raffling off great prizes, including 2 hockey sticks signed by the 2008/2009 Men's Ice Hockey Team.

The coaches and team join Big Red fans in the hospitality area following the games on each day.

Complete details on this website: [www.alumni.cornell.edu]

Hope to see you there!

This is an awesome event, both the hockey games and the Cornell hospitality. We've gone just about every other year this decade and always enjoyed it. It's a little better in years when a big midwestern team (with lots of snowbird alumni) plays, such as Notre Dame or Ohio State, but there are good crowds in other years, too.

Thanks for the info.

After attending back in 2003(?), I look forward to potentially returning this year. Will be in Florida over Christmas week; just not sure yet if that's going to include a jaunt over to the Gulf Coast.

Thanks for the info but probably not this year. UND is eating up a fair amount of my travel budget, for better or for worse.

BUMP!

Hope to see many of you at the tournament.

We'll be selling Cornell sweatshirts and raffle tickets. The grand prize is 2 hockey sticks signed by the entire team. All proceeds to support Cornell Scholarship and Cornell Hockey.

Be sure to visit the Cornell Hospitality area above section 114 for refreshments, a cash bar, and to meet the other Big Red enthusiasts in town for the event.

Go Big Red!

Well, check this out. Sat game listed on B2TV.com. I can't get it to link to Sat Dec. 27, but scroll down to the month and click on 27. It's there.

Edit: Unfortunately when I click "Click for more info" all I get is a link to U Mass-Lowell season pass.:( hopefully it'll improve as we get closer. It must be on with their listing. worry

Well at least now it links to St. Cloud season pass. panicAfter all, they are in the tourney. It looks like we'll have to wait till game day to see what the prices will be.cuss

A little factoid I picked up looking at the tournament webpage. Cornell has participated inthe tournament for eight years now. Over that span the team is 8-8, won the tournament twice, finished 2nd twice, 3rd twice and last twice. So basically the results have been about what you would expect if we had flipped a fair coin sixteen times.

I think we're actually 7-8-1 since one of those "wins" was a shootout.

I remember two shootout wins at the Florida tournament: against Minnesota-Duluth in December '05 in the championship game, and against Clarkson last year in the consolation. So 6-8-2 for our official record then?

OK, B2TV is not being helpful, as they still link to St. Cloud season pass when I click on "Click Here to Purchase Florida College Classic Multiple Event Pass". I've contacted them twice with no response. So does anyone know anything about how to get all games, or do we just wait till 10 minutes before the 'gate game and see what happens?

There's an Arizona Pizza Kitchen right near the arena on Cork Screw. Also, there's a nice outlet mall in the same area with a few restaurants there.

There's tons in the area, the worst thing is that things seem to close early so it's been tough for me to find a spot to eat after the games if we play the late game. Hopefully the fact that this is on a Sat night will make a difference.

Also, don't forget to stop by the Cornell Hopsitality area above section 114. There's a buffet available for anyone who buys a raffle ticket.

Go Big Red!

I'd say you have to wait until ten minutes before the 'gate game. It is probably set up the same way as if you purchased a single event pass.

From B2:

To Watch a Single Event

Todays Events Are Listed to the Right
10 Minutes before the event begins, a green box will appear above today's scheduled events.

I agree that is most likely, however why do they put up a link to watch the complete tourney?screwy

Are we 100% certain that Time Warner Cable Ithaca (and Syracuse, for Jim) are not going to be televising these games? I know their schedules are showing high school football or something as the scheduled programming, but I also know that in past years these games were broadcast by TWC. Today's Ithaca Journal did not include any information on television broadcast, but even so, I remain optomistic that the game (or games) will magically appear. Has anyone heard anything definitive that TWC is definitely --not-- carrying these games?

I also know that in past years these games were broadcast by TWC.

The last year this tournament was on any actual television at all, judging by a cursory search of this forum, was Dec. 2004. The following is a record of ways to view video of the Florida tournament:

Dec 2008: B2 webcast??
Dec 2007: B2 webcast
Dec 2006: None
Dec 2005: B2 webcast
Dec 2004: CSTV
Dec 2003: CSTV
Dec 2002: None

For the record, audio of tonight's game will be available through the usual RedCast subscription.

30 minutes before game time and the Colgate/Maine game link is now in its green box and apparently available for purchase. $10 per game, it seems.

Good for Colgate and good for the league. Now we have to take care of business vs. the #4 offense in the country (from the USCHO preview). The good news is that they have poor defensive stats.

Someone should make a game thread for this. (not it, since I'm outta here shortly)

I'm happy for you, Rich. When RedCast consistently starts their webcasts 30 minutes before gametime, they'll be dependable.

Yes, in 2005 B2 gave good service. They apparently are still responsive to emails, a real plus. Giving a link to the game after it starts, however, is lousy service in my book...perhaps not in yours.

Cornell, Maine, Princeton, Colorado College
Like continuing to get a WCHA team to come down. Dislike continuing to have another ECAC team there.

I'd love to swap Princeton for Notre Dame or Miami, but all things considered, not bad. I'd love to see us permanently lock a CCHA or HE team into the lineup as the third team for Estero, like how we had OSU.

B2 ranks right up there with RedCast when it comes to dependable service.

I'll preface my zinger by saying that I rarely have any problems with RedCast.

Gotta give those B2 guys credit for great customer service. I sent two emails and got responses within 30 seconds. Unreal.

Aww...c'mon Al! If I can't make a "Daily Show" inspired joke here, where can I? :-) I was going for a laugh, and I got a miffed response. I guess I now know what ugarte feels like. :-}

I don't see the point of creating a new topic for post-tournament discussion, so I'll jot my completely clueless thoughts here, since I didn't catch a second of any broadcasts due to holiday travel and the completely dismal broadcasting power of WHCU.

Cornell captures their 3rd Harkness Cup, sadly and appropriately months after Ned's passing. This ties us with Maine for number of Florida titles. Two of our tournament championships had to come via the shootout.

While it would potentially have been nice to get another game vs. a Hockey East team for PWR purposes, the ECAC Final matchup is a good thing for the league. WZHA and Hockey Least got to fight for the consolation. And fans in attendance were treated to lots of bonus hockey. 3 of 4 games went to OT, 2 to shootouts, and all four were close.

I think Al made the comment in the SCSU game thread that we were too much "in a shell" in the 3rd. This is pretty much what I've come to expect from this team. We're winning an awful lot of these games where we're hanging on to 1-goal leads by our teeth. Somehow surviving 3rd period shooting galleries by our opponents. This is where your judgment of volume of water in a glass comes in for measuring expectations the rest of the way. Optimist: We're able to win these games this way and it will help us in the pressure-packed playoffs. Pessimist: we've made too much of a habit of this style and it's only a matter of time before it comes back to bite us and we start dropping them.

I actually got the score of the SCSU game by calling the "Big Red Hotline" late on Saturday night. For all the high-tech ways to get results these days, I am very grateful that CU Athletics keeps this service alive. It does come in handy when you're at a relative's house and can't access your usual resources. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, 607-255-2385, and I'm stunned I can pull this number out of thin air after all these years.

If I'm bored during the offseason, someone remind me to start a crusade to get the games broadcast on a radio station that has enough nighttime power to make it out of the Ithaca city limits. 870 am is abysmal, and someone has to realize that CU has fans outside a 10-mile radius. I was in Rochester when the games were on 103.7 FM and I could pick it up. Eagle Broadcasting has what...4 stations? c'mon. I was 30 miles from Ithaca on Saturday and I was treated to tons of New Orleans sports talk.

It's really hard to try to find and read through the game thread without spoiling the result. I almost succeeded, and it involved a lot of strategically covering parts of my screen with my hand.

I hate to wish boredom on you. But, I sincerely hope you go for that crusade. I've tried a number of times (including this past offseason), to no avail. They will not even consider it. They did tell me that WHCU-AM will be simulcast on an FM frequency (I think 95.5). That sounded hopeful because even a weak FM signal is easier to get than a weak AM signal. But, I soon found out that there is another station in Elmira that uses the same 95.5 (or whatever it is) for a translator. So, I still can't get WHCU-AM at night.

With all of the other free audio broadcasts on the web, it's sad that CU is so greedy that they cannot make theirs available too.

Looks like a very strong field. Maine is co-host and I can't believe they'll be mediocre for long. The Tigers we know all about, and it's great to get CC. Past performance is no guarantee of future results, but 75% of the field is currently in the top 10. Good job by the field organizers.

Getting strong CCHA teams will always be difficult because of the GLI, and there's little point in getting a weak one (except for a chance of securing the extra PWR win against a common opponent for comparisons with CCHA teams, and even that might backfire since the CCHA powers will likely have multiple wins against them).
