USHR has just posted that Brent has taken an assistant's job with Miami.

I wish him well.

Let the speculation begin...

Oh good. Really didn't need to lose the defensive assistant coach. Maybe Schafer can just run the defense and Cornell can take this opportunity to bring in another offensively-minded assistant coach and... I dunno... a goalie coach?

Successfully continuing to have absolutely nothing to do with Cornell.

Let the speculation begin...
Joe Nieuwendyk would be a good addition to the staff. A lot more name recognition on the recruiting circuit than Donato too.

While I suppose Nieuwendyk's friendship with Schafer and Ithaca home could make this conceivable, I doubt a former NHLer of his stature would take a college assistant coach position even at his Alma Mater.

Of. His. Stature. Get with the program or go join the Roundtable.

Stature is a different story, but there are plenty of cases of NHL-level talent going back to the college ranks. Walt Kyle, Mike Richter(ish), that Harvard guy, Red Berenson, and Mike Eaves come to mind. It certainly wouldn't be unprecedented and I'd guess involves whether or not Joe wants to do it more than whatever the norm may be in the hockey community.

Edit: What's more, he's never coached. If he was interested in pursuing a coaching career, it's pretty reasonable to expect him to start somewhere a bit lower than an office in the Air Canada Center.

Quoting from a thread from 2003 about the ceremony where banners were raised:

Section A
(Schafer) then introduced Bâby by saying that if he ever wants a coaching job under Schafer, he'd love to have him. And Schafer also noted that the only other person he'd ever said that to was Brent Brekke.

Totally forgot about Richter, let alone the other examples. I guess it's less unimaginable than I thought. *shrug*

As for coaching at a low level first, lots of superstar athletes like to think they can jump right into coaching at a high level. Not surprising considering how much ego top level athletes usually have. Whether they should coach at a lower level first is a different question.

Don't knock Mike Richter's stature. That guy was awesome.

I kinda thought that was a special case because Richter was already there as a student.

I disagree.

Gotta love a country that's own parliament has two reference to hockey.

Is an offensive player really the right guy to run the defense?

It also suggests that Brekke asked Schafer whether he planned to step down any time soon and Mike said, "nope." You usually make a horizontal move when something's blocking a vertical move.

Unless your spouse is saying: "I really want to move to be near my family." (And, I don't know that to be the case).

That's some powerful stuff!! It's tough to say "no" to that......

It'll be very interesting to see who gets hired, considering this is the first coaching change in like 10 years.

Except for the whole "Scott Garrow leaves, Jamie Russell shows up, Jamie Russell leaves, Scott Garrow shows up" change :)

Garrow was an assistant at Cornell from 95-99, when he took an assistant position at WMU (his alma mater). He was replaced by Jamie Russell. Russell left after the frozen four run in 03 to take the head coaching job at his alma mater (MTU) and Schafer brought Garrow back as the 1st assistant.

As I recall, the student assistant spot wouldn't have been open to Richter at Yale...the traditional "volunteer assistant" spot was the one he filled, and it didn't empty until after his first year taking classes.

I'd also remind you that Shawn McEachern is an assistant at Northeastern. If Nieuwendyk has a home in Ithaca - which I was unaware of - then that move could be more likely than you imagine.

Only related via another board, but...

I was trying to explain to the Miami folk why Cornell's fish throwing is different from UNH's or UNO's, and I went to YouTube looking for a video to show them.

How is it that there is no YouTube video of the festivities before the Harvard game?

If I were still at CSTV.com - heck, if there still was a CSTV.com - I might be able to do something about fixing that, but this seems like a no-brainer for YouTube.
