Do we really need nominations for the Dadswell-Vesce award? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Yeah, I know Fontas only here for 3 years and we only saw him for 2, but could anyone have predicted he would be so valuable this year?

I honestly think the refereeing has gotten a lot better. Most of the time we were to blame.

I can't come up with a really notorious opponent.

Scrivens for MVP? Well where would we have been without him? Defense was not up to our standards, no offenseman was head and shoulders above, no captain was so stimulating, and Scrivens played much stronger than any of us could have imagined. If he improves some of his positioning and puck handling he could turn out to be a great tender. The hope is that since those are teachable skills he could really spark the team next year. If so, we could go a distance in the NCAA's. My other choice for MVP was Fontas, but 3 awards was too much.

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award; Career Improvement - Chris Fontas I wouldn’t give it to any senior though. Can anyone really say that Scott, Sawada, or Krantz are leaving Cornell a much better player than when they entered?

I am very surprised how at how much respect you guys are giving Tyler Burton. I never thought of him as a goon per say, just chippy. Think Jay Latulippe. Maybe he didn't play that way against Cornell, but against Tech (much more so this year than last) he was a skating prick. Slashes left and right, taunting, and atleast one spear that I saw during the playoffs.

if I had a vote it would go to SLU's Jared Ross for most respected opponent.

Greening led the team in points and scored four game-winning goals this year. He provided energy on the ice when the rest of the team was playing uninspired hockey. It was a very close call between him and Scrivens for MVP.

Re: 19th Annual TBRW Awards: Your Nominations

I also went with Greening because I never found Scrivens to be overly spectacular. How many games did you say Scrivens really stole it for us, he made the saves he should have but he also made the saves he shouldn't have? How many times did Cornell beat a team they shouldn't have because Scrivens was spectacular? Scrivens had a knack for not showing up in big game situations, especially against Clarkson, BU, St. Lawrence, and Harvard.

Now mind you, I thought he played very well this season, and I thought he was the most improved off season player next to Joe Scali. He was at Cornell from July 1 and worked on his form the entire summer. If he puts that kind of effort into his game this summer, you are going to look at a goalie that will start stealing wins for us. I really think that was the difference maker the season, and one of the biggest reasons why Cornell just couldn't crack to the top teams in the league.

I'm surprised to hear a Clarkson fan admit what a little bitch Latulippe was. Next thing you know I'll be getting the BU fans on USCHO to admit the same thing about Zancanaro. :-O

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award, Career Improvemet: Since the criteria says that "when no senior has demonstrated above average career improvement, juniors", and I can't find it in me to give it to Fontas since he didn't start out here - Michael Kennedy

Randy MacFarlane Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess: Riley Nash

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award, Scrappiness and Effort: Joe Scali

Terry Gage Award, Determination in a Supporting Role: Tyler Mugford

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award, Leadership and Passion: Topher Scott

Belanger-Murphy Family Award, Most Loathed Referee: I must admit that Paul Stewart has really whipped them into something resembling "shape" this year, so I can't point any fingers.

John Carter-Dom Moore Award, Most Respected Opponent: Sylvain Michaud or Paul Dainton, goalies for Trois-Rivieres and Umass respectively; the only two to shut us out this year, even if they were both scoreless ties

Kevan Melrose-Matt Nickerson Award, Least Respected Opponent: Brown University Men's Ice Hockey Team

Brian Hayward-David LeNeveu Award, Leading Goaltender: Ben Scrivens

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award, Most Valuable Freshman: Riley Nash

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award, MVP: Colin Greening

Cute. :-)

Reminds me of an acquaintance who tried to argue that the elderly can't possibly have the loss of driving skills and coordination that people claim they do, because fewer of them have accidents every year than any other age group... but she didn't stop to consider that the elderly probably drive far fewer miles than other age groups. When I asked her for stats on accidents per miles driven for the various age groups, she said, "Do your own research!"

I must be the only one who enjoys watching Brendon skate more than Riley. Brendon's skating seems so effortless, and he doesn't ever seem to panic, while Riley's success seems to be due much more to aggressive and quick puckhandling. I'm not sure exactly which is more in the spirit of the award, and of course it doesn't matter because Riley already has the award locked up. ;-)

Randy MacFarlane Award; Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess:

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award; Scrappiness and Effort: MUGFORD

Terry Gage Award; Determination in a Supporting Role: FONTAS or SCALI

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award; Leadership and Passion: SCOTT

Belanger-Murphy Family Award "The Pierre"; Most Loathed Referee:

John Carter-Dom Moore Award; Most Respected Opponent: TYLER BURTON

Brian Hayward-David LeNeveu Award; Leading Goaltender: SCRIVENS

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award; Most Valuable Freshman: R. NASH

No, you're not the only one. I voted for Brendon last season for that award ( [elf.elynah.com] ), and I still enjoy the effortless grace in his stride over Riley's. With Brendon's injury, he hasn't been as strong as he was last year, but at least twice in Albany, I saw an opposing forward cranking hard towards a free puck, only to have B. Nash beat him there with two strides. I would describe Riley's skating as "sneaky fast" or better yet, "sneaky explosive." Brendon still has a strong calmness about his skating that I enjoy.

Brendon's skating seems so effortless, and he doesn't ever seem to panic, while Riley's success seems to be due much more to aggressive and quick puckhandling. I'm not sure exactly which is more in the spirit of the award, and of course it doesn't matter because Riley already has the award locked up. ;-)

Kyle

Some of that may be because a defenseman gets to try and skate the puck up from our zone and usually then dump it in or pass it off. It's not as often that they try and skate in between a couple of defenders. Watching Riley make an end to end rush allows for those graceful strides, as well as the short quick strides, and stick and puck motion to try and get by a defender. He sometimes tries too much, but when he can do it, as at Brown, it truly is beautiful. I don't remember Brendon doing that type of rush.

Terry Gage Award; Determination in a Supporting Role: FONTAS or SCALI

Based on the requirements of... "an athlete whose contributions do not show up in the box score. It often goes to an unexpected player who comes out of the pack to really contribute a particular skill as a role player."

I say give it to Scali. He was our best penalty killer all year and seemed to really take the notion of role player to heart.

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award; Career Improvement
Chris Fontas. He struggled to fit in when he first came over, but he definitely "got it" this year, and turned out to be very valuable this season. Outstanding PK'er.

Randy MacFarlane Award; Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess
Riley Nash. I'm not going to put my money where my mouth is only because of Brendon Nash's injury. It was a tough one to come back from so soon. Brendon wasn't as strong as he was last season, and for a while he could only play one game/week. Since I'm one of those who think the awards should be considered over an entire season of work, it slips to little bro. Sneaky explosive.

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award; Scrappiness and Effort
Tyler Mugford. I see the word "scrap" and I think Mugford. Never backed down from a challenge. Any other of the players getting votes would be fine, too.

Terry Gage Award; Determination in a Supporting Role
Joe Scali. Mr. Versatility. Did whatever was asked of him.

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award; Leadership and Passion
Topher, Topher, Topher. Few can say they filled out the Cornell sweater with as much pride. There's a reason he was a fan favorite from his first game freshman year. Always locked in, always giving whatever he had.

John Carter-Dom Moore Award; Most Respected Opponent
Mike Moore & Brett Wilson, Princeton. They shut us all up and did so with talent and class. Moore is one heckuva defenseman, if you weren't paying attention. I'd take either of these guys on my team any day.

Brian Hayward-David LeNeveu Award; Leading Goaltender
Scrivens, of course. I didn't like the decision to go with him exclusively, but he probably learned the most over the season of anyone on the team. The benching in FL made him think about when to leave the net.

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award; Most Valuable Freshman
Riley, slam-dunk.

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award; Most Valuable Player
Colin Greening & Justin Krueger. I hate splitting my vote for this one, but let's face it...the offense & defense respectively collapse without these two. Greening showed us that he can be everything we want him to be with what he did to score the OT GWG vs. Colgate. Krueger was so so so important to the defense all year, but especially early on when it looked like the wheels might be falling off. The best shot-blocker, essential on the PK...it would be a shame for this season to end without him getting at least some recognition.

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award; Career Improvement - Chris Fontas, I guess. Not a lot of options here, and it's still hard to stick Fontas in here.

Randy MacFarlane Award; Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess - Riley Nash.

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award; Scrappiness and Effort - Tyler Mugford.

Terry Gage Award; Determination in a Supporting Role - Joe Scali.

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award; Leadership and Passion - Topher Scott.

Belanger-Murphy Family Award "The Pierre"; Most Loathed Referee - I hate to have such a short memory about this, but it's still kinda hard to get past Peter Feola at the moment.

John Carter-Dom Moore Award; Most Respected Opponent - Lee Jubinville.

Kevan Melrose-Matt Nickerson Award; Least Respected Opponent - A tie between Alex Biega and Josh Coyle. I'd tend to give it to Biega, though, since Coyle's screwups worked to our advantage in Schenectady.

Brian Hayward-David LeNeveu Award; Leading Goaltender - Ben Scrivens.

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award; Most Valuable Freshman - Riley Nash.

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award; Most Valuable Player - Colin Greening.

DISCRETIONARY AWARDS:

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award; Career Improvement Krantz (I think your 2-3 year old memories have been collectively failing if you don't agree.)

Randy MacFarlane Award; Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess B. Nash

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award; Scrappiness and Effort Mugford

Terry Gage Award; Determination in a Supporting Role Fontas

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award; Leadership and Passion Duh

Belanger-Murphy Family Award "The Pierre"; Most Loathed Referee Feola

John Carter-Dom Moore Award; Most Respected Opponent Jubinville

Kevan Melrose-Matt Nickerson Award; Least Respected Opponent Biega

Brian Hayward-David LeNeveu Award; Leading Goaltender Davenport (Greg, and a fair number of the rest of you know perfectly well what I think about Scrivens' goaltending)

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award; Most Valuable Freshman Mike Devin. Yes, really. I think Riley's overrated at this point and needs to put on about 25 lbs before he can make a consistent impact. Devin played a much more significant role in the team's success this year.

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award; Most Valuable Player Greening

You know...usually I say "TBRW awards are as meaningless as polls in November," but I've been thinking this Friday night. Nothing against Brendon (spelling, Greg!) Nash or Mike Devin, but given my MVP vote, it's criminal...CRIMINAL that Justin Krueger didn't get at least this "All-Star" award that I never knew about. He was easily the best defenseman on the ice over the course of the entire season, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise (wait...maybe that's just the beer from tonight talking.) I usually don't go to bat for a player like this, especially a defenseman unless he is on the same playing field as Burgoyne, Bell, and Cook...but I'm telling you Krueger is nearing that level.

Who's with me? Let's GO, C'MON! HOOOOOO!

*listens for crickets*

I think this situation absolutely requires...a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part. And we're just the guys to do it.
