Nieuwy 500 Countdown: 1!!!!!

One more for Joe Nieuwendyk to reach 500 career RS goals in the NHL.

Hell yeah, we still get a point.

No 500th goal tonight, but 30 stitches for Joe after being hit by a puck on his right ear.

Ow!! And he still played over 18 minutes last night (Monday) -- 2 assists.

Here's more details from today's Record about the injury...

"JOE COOL: Joe Nieuwendyk had a small piece of plastic inserted inside the right ear hole of his helmet to protect his ear, which was struck by a Jamie Langenbrunner clearing attempt in Saturday's game. Nieuwendyk needed 30 stitches to close the cut. He said he was bothered by a slight headache Sunday, but felt fine Monday other than some pressure in his ear from the cut. The puck nearly severed off the bottom of his earlobe".

Of course he played....he's a hockey player!

According to yesterday's Times article--which, for some reason, didn't arrive in my email until today--Joe had both a crossbar and a post in Monday night's game.

Well...Tverdosky just scored, and the Isles radio men were saying how it may have been deflected off Nieuwy in front (if not him, then the Isles D-man, Timmander).

Looks like it'll stay as Oleg's goal.

At 4-0 Devils now, I'm left rooting for #500....

Kidneystone of a game, but Nieuwy did another assist for 3 in 2 games. Maybe he'll get to 500 assists first.

You have to wonder what Mario could have done, if he had staved healthy.

I'd love to see a list of the top players alltime by goals-per-game. That would give a pretty good indicator of players from all eras (the absolute numbers favor modern players with long seasons). The IHDB can't handle that -- anybody know a good online hockey resource that can?

Well, for what it is worth, my friend of a friend that is an NHL official once commented spontaneously over a few beers that Mario could have easily been better than the Great One if he'd had any sort of work ethic.

As I'm in the middle of reading Home Game right now, I have to wonder if Dryden is right in saying that guys that come from working class families are hungrier and simply want it more.

Dryden is absolutely right! Most of the great all time players fit that mold.

But I'm not sure what is meant by Mario lacking a work ethic....since when?

Looking at the list, being just the 32nd player to score 500 or more goals puts Joe in pretty rare company. It's something very special and something to cherish. Congratulations!! And who knows, the legs may have enough to get him into the high 20s or better on the list.

My sick twisted ECAC driven mind really likes the penalty Nieuwy got in the third for roughing Erik Cole. Did anyone see this play? I picked it up on the ESPN box score page.

I thought Joey Mullen played for some Hell's Kitchen juniors team; had no idea he went to BC.

Joe Mullen (NY Westsiders) 110-72-182 in 40 games!


The *most* fun hockey stat is a roller hockey stat: Rocco Miano (MPCA) led the MPRHL Mites Division in scoring in 1998-99 with 112 goals in 13 games.

Interestingly, when Joe scored 51 goals in his second year in the NHL, he tied for leading goal scorer on the Flames...with Joe Mullen.

Ray Ferraro did not play at UConn. That was Todd Krygier you're probably thinking of. Ferraro is a Trail Smoke Eater.

You're right, it was Krygier. Except now I can't remember the NHLer who played at Northern Arizona (I was misremembering him as Krygier).

Didn't McMeekin play for Trail? Speaking of which, anyone know where Brian is playing this year? Hockeydb.com lists him playing several games in the ECHL, but no longer on an active roster.

I believe the Northern Arizona dude was Greg Adams (one of the two). I could go to hockeydb.com and look it up, but I'm too lazy...

If you click on "team histories" or something like that, there's a way to see all the alumni of any particular team.

It was Adams, although Bob Beers spent a year there before transfering to Maine.

Brian did play for Trail. He is now with the Florida Everblades; he was traded in November from the Trenton Titans for cash. I think he still splits time with the Titans but I don't know for sure. All the '02 graduates were profiled in the latest edition of the Cornell Alumni Magazine.

In fact that was goal 502--tying Mullen. 501 tied the game with 12.5 seconds left. Plus two assists. Joe's on a roll.

Darn it, you guys beat me to posting this! I had the pleasure of watching this game live. Of course, I was sitting with a Sharks' fan, so I couldn't be too overtly excited with the way it ended! It was great to finally see Nieuwy play live and get the 1st star of the game.

Good thing he got the 500 Gorilla off of his back.

Come on Josh! The Devils are much better than the Rangers, the Isles and all the other eastern US teams - esp better than that horrid Boston!
