ITHACA - Meet the odd couple.

And not entirely because they're goalies, which - as most hockey players will attest - are a completely different breed.

Goalies Troy Davenport and Ben Scrivens are reunited as the Cornell hockey team's last line of defense as the Big Red kicks off its 2007-08 season on Saturday against RIT at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.

One plays a technical style, the other takes advantage of his size and reflexes. One is talkative, the other quiet. One is American, the other Canadian. And in their freshmen seasons, they even roomed together on road trips.

You can almost hear the theme music from early '70s sit-com now.

"As far as us being different, that's just a safe comment," said Scrivens, with nearby teammates laughing. "I'd say he's a little more different than me, but compared to the (skaters), we're both pretty much out there."

Both were pretty much out there on the ice last season as the Big Red tried to find a replacement for departed three-year starter David McKee. Davenport, then a sophomore, emerged as the early favorite and played 24 games. But Scrivens worked his way into 12 games as a freshman from Canada, and the duo was co-piloting the crease by the end of the season.

"They're both very capable and both want to step up and be that No. 1 guy," Cornell coach Mike Schafer said. "If both of them step up and it's equal, both of them will play. ... Both did a really good job last year, and they're both very confident right now."

Neither goalie said the battle for playing time has affected them in a negative way. In the end, they're still teammates.

"If you couldn't get along with the guy, I think it just means it's more difficult if you had guys butting heads all the time," Davenport said. "We can throw ideas off each other, see what he thinks and he sees what I think. Hopefully, we can use each other's information and get better."

Both put up solid numbers last season. Davenport posted a 2.41 goals-against average, .899 save percentage and 11-7-2 record in 24 games, while Scrivens was 3-6-2 with a 2.30 GAA and .911 save pct. But the Big Red finished 2006-07 with a 14-13-4 record and a disappointing early exit from the playoffs when Quinnipiac completed ECAC Hockey League quarterfinal sweep at Lynah Rink.

There are a lot of areas in Cornell's game that have been targeted for improvement - and consistency from the goalies is one of them.

"Goaltending is definitely going to be key for us this year," said forward Topher Scott, a senior co-captain. "If one of them steps up, we can be a really, really dangerous team. All of them have the ability to do it, it's just a matter of one of them saying, ‘I'm the man' and really gettin'er done."

Scrivens and Davenport get it done in slightly different ways. Davenport describes his style as more technical and dependent on angles. Scrivens tends to position himself deeper in the crease with his bigger frame and make reactionary saves.

In a way, it mirrors their personalities. Senior defenseman Doug Krantz summed it up as, "Troy's a little more quiet. ‘Scrivs' likes to chat it up a little bit."

Added Davenport: "It's kind of fun to have two different personalities like we have. To see him talking all the time and I'm a little bit more of a mellow guy who just goes with the flow. We have a good time."

The good times should continue if both goalies continue to develop and improve over the next couple of years. Davenport said having a full year of experience under his belt makes a huge difference in regards to reads on plays and expectations in college hockey in general.

Scrivens said a more business-like approach may be the key for him.

"Last year, coming in from my junior career, my practice habits weren't where they needed to be for the coaching staff to look at me every game," Scrivens said. "Coming in this year, I know what the coaches expect as far as practicing goes. I'm used to the speed of the game. ... I know what's expected of me. It's my turn to step up."

From chatty to reserved, from aggressive to calculated, and from starting half the games to starting all of them, the bottom line doesn't change.

"They're different personalities - but when the puck hits the ice, they're both really focused," Schafer said. "They're very similar in a lot of aspects."

Those similar aspects are the ones that makes goalies so, as Scrivens said, ‘out there.' The competitive nature. The perfectionism. The desire to put the team on their shoulders on any given night. Those similar aspects are the only ones that matter to the Big Red.

I heard from someone at the game that it (the call) was "bullshit." I didn't get much beyond that.

It's a big win for their program. I can understand their excitement. They were D-3 just a couple years ago, and I don't think they've ever beaten an NC D-1 opponent.

These announcers are ridiculous. Besides the fact that they are completely obnoxious, I love how "Scrivens" gradually morphed into "ScrivNER" throughout the broadcast. Also, "one of the great games of RIT hockey history"? That says a lot about RIT hockey.

Personally, I'd love to see them in the ECAC instead of Union.
