Well, one of two things is going to happen. Either Stewart is going to bring professionalism to the ECAC that it hasn't seen since... well... ever. Or he's going to quickly get sick of the half-assed mentality of the conference administration and quit.

Wow, that's an awesome pickup. Great job by Hagwell to get him on board.

Yes, but poor job by Hagwell to find a staff writer who remembers to edit for redundancy:

"Stewart assumes the leadership role of an officiating staff that comprised more than 40 individuals in 2006-07...Stewart assumes the leadership role of an officiating staff that comprised more than 40 individuals in 2006-07."

What's this mean for Viola's career?

Anyone else remember Stewart's time as a defenseman for the Broome Dusters in the NAHL? If I recall correctly (I was 7), he led the team in penalty minutes.

HockeyDB says you're right. In two full seasons with the Dusters, Stewart had 505 (!) penalty minutes in 106 games. In two later, shorter, stints, he had 69 over 21 games, then 40 over 7 games. He also had 240 PIMs over 41 games with the Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA.

So, uh, Schafer might want to think twice about getting in his face too often.

(Yes, I know he's not going to be an on-ice official.)

Well, at least he knows all about penalties!

But it sounds like he'll sympathize with Clarkson.

Cute. rolleyes But not likely given his Ivy roots.

Seriously now, Stewie is a quality guy who overcame an illness to resume a solid career as an NHL official. I think he'll add some much-needed credibility, and hopefully improved quality to the officiating in the league.

I had the chance to meet him when travelling with the Clarkson team in Philly in '74, when he had left the Penn team and was about to leave school. Later saw him play with the Broome Dusters in Bingo. He was a crowd favorite because he always gave 100 % and was very entertaining.

I wish him well in his new career.
