I witnessed something yesterday that really moved me and so totally surprised three former Cornellians that I want to share it with other Big Red hockey fans.
This sweater - a bit small by today's standards - was apparantly taken from the team's "practice" equipment. (likely not missed because it was used prior to the '72-'73 season during which it was filched).
Because it was taken without permission, the new owner wore it just a few times before being somewhat afraid to be seen with it in public. He packed it away for 30+ years with an idea that maybe someday it would find its way home.
At my invitation, he recently renewed his following of Cornell Hockey. He and a few friends made it to the ECAC final last year in Albany but still sans jersey. His son was recently admitted to the class of 2011 but will not have this to wear at Lynah.
Last night the jersey found a home in which it will stay for many years. Dave Peace'75,captain of the Big Red his senior year, was in Troy with his wife, Laurie'75 and daughter'07 to see Cornell take on RPI. Dave's son Dan RPI'08 is playing for the Engineers.
We met for dinner before the game and unbeknowst to all but one at the table, the jersey was given back to #6. I still can't believe how lucky I was to be a fly on the wall.

Sure is. We just noticed the owner has the foundation laid for another addition.

The RPI coach made it easy. He has been platooning people and Dan did not play Saturday (they could have used him on the penalty kill).
Dave was rooting for Cornell!
