And an article on the worth, or lack thereof, of the preseason polls.

The article is not very convincing because its only indicator of predictive validity is whether or not teams with a #1 poll ranking won the NC. Winning the NC means beating increasingly better teams. If we could assign teams some sort of power score with absolute certainty, and the difference in power scores maps exactly to the probability of one team beating another, then probabilities approach 50/50 as teams progress towards a NC. The probability of any particular team winning several games in a row to capture the NC would be less than 50%, even if it has the highest power scores and therefore the highest probability of winning the NC.

A much better proof or disproof of the worth of preseason poles would be a something like a correlation between pole rankings and subsequent winning percentage.

Also injuries play a major role in all teams' fortunes. So the teams in preseason are often not the ones playing April, even if they have the same names.

Shows how much i've been paying attention to polls. When did they start listing 20 teams in the USCHO poll? That's pretty ridiculous.

Not really, if you understand the purpose of polls differently. They're designed to garner readership. The more teams in the poll, the more fans who read the polls.

I saw the bowling green . rit game.. one game sample but RIT was by far the better team all over the ice that game. they are not a top 15 team.

didnt robert morris go into michigan and shut them out and blow a 3-1 lead late in the other game? if mich gets votes robert morris probably should get more than 2.

Since 16 teams are in the NCAA tournament I don't see a problem listing 20 in the poll.

With the autobids you never have that many spots available. 15 seems more than sufficient to me. Swampy's comment is right, of course. But I don't have to like it.

This is crabby even for eLynah. The poll includes "others receiving votes" so it isn't like we didn't know who 16-20 were before. This poll includes the top 35.

It will be interesting to see where the polls put us tomorrow. I figure with us at 4 PWR but at 23 last week, let's say they split the difference and put us at 13/14.

Who do we displace? My impression is that rising in the polls is more about teams immediately above you slipping.
Michigan Tech (20) split with Bowling Green (15)
Clarkson (19) lost to St.L (15)[sic]
Notre Dame (18) beat and tied Northeastern
Miami (17) lost twice to North Dakota (3)
Bowling Green (15) split with Michigan Tech (2)
St. Lawrence (15) beat Clarkson (19)
Merrimack (14) beat Massachusetts and tied New Hampshire.
Minnesota-Duluth (13) split with Denver (8) if you count their 3-on-3 OT win

After New Year's definitely. But in the first couple months there can be big moves as the voters start feeling stupid that they are wildly divergent from the standings and PWR.

My impression (with no empirical analysis) is that PWR exerts gravity on the polls.

In all honesty, they shouldn't even do polls until 1/1.

After New Year's definitely. But in the first couple months there can be big moves as the voters start feeling stupid that they are wildly divergent from the standings and PWR.

My impression (with no empirical analysis) is that PWR exerts gravity on the polls.

I think David has it right. It's early enough in the season that PWR is pretty meaningless, small sample size and all. Heck, CHN doesn't even caculate it yet. So voters will feel comfortable with ignoring it. By the midpoint in the season there's enough games to start to see how things are really playing out and PWR begins to stabilize. At that point the polls will begin to converge toward the ratings.

In all honesty, they shouldn't even do polls until 1/1.
In all honesty, they shouldn't even do polls. But whatever.

18, jumping over MTU and Clarkson.

For a second a three point road weekend from the infirmary, including against a tough Yale team, might get more credit than two over 0-12 Colorado College. But UMD outscored CC 11-0 in Denver. Weird early season voting strikes again.

Also, what happened to Colorado College. Jeez. EDIT: except for two losses to UMass on opening weekend, CC's schedule has been BRUTAL. UMD was the *lowest* ranked team they've played since the UMass games.

Well, would they feel better if it were a neutral ice series in Denver? That long bus ride up from the Springs is exhausting. (Sorry, feeling snarky this morning.)

I just wish I could find data from the 60s and 70s. I suspect we were in the top 10 for 15 straight years, and in the top 5 for much of that time.

I wish the polls would publish low and high per team, too.

It will be interesting to see where we end up. The next 10 teams above us didn't help their status.

We ought to move ahead of Denver, Yale and SLU, so I'll say 12th in USCHO. We're 7th in PWR so for the voters who use that it should also exert a pull since we are currrently "undervalued."

Lowell had a nightmare weekend -- they will drop like a stone, but I doubt we'll get above them.

Nice to get the respect, as little as it actually counts for in the real world. And luckily, our next two games are against #1 and (probably) #3 (unless unranked tOSU pulls off a big upset), so at least if we lose those, we shouldn't tank too badly in the voting afterward.

First time in the top 10 since 3 Feb 2014, when we broke in for one week. Prior to that the previous time was 5 Nov 2012. We have not finished a season in the top 10 since 2010.

USA Hockey/USA Today has the same Top 10, only we're much closer in vote totals to #9 Michigan than in USCHO. The only difference in the Top 15 is BU & Denver are flipped at 11/12.

No lose = good news.

Michigan lost to Minnesota this weekend, so we move past them into 9th in both polls. I'll let Jim do his formatting work, if he wants.

Hey, our next opponent got 82 of 84 first place votes. Is that good? Having the chance to pop the cork for the 1970 team's Champagne Mercury Morris-style is a good challenge.

The 1970 team was unbeaten and untied. So in that sense the record is already safe for another year.

But I agree with your sentiment. I'm going to buy two bottles: one for protecting the record on 12/28, and one for winning the tournament the next day. Should the hockey gods be unkind, at this time of year I'm sure I'll find another occasion to use the bottle(s).

Here's to popping the cork twice in 2015! drunk

And no change in our poll position following the Jekyll/Hyde tournament performance; Cornell remains at 9th in both polls. Michigan leap-frogs us, but UMass-Lowell falls from 8-10. Providence drops to #3 after 2 OT losses to Ivys, and BC drops from #3 to #7. North Dakota and Quinnipiac split the #1 positions. Five ECAC teams in the top 15.

And no change in our poll position following the Jekyll/Hyde tournament performance
Wonder how high we would have climbed with just a simple win? 6 maybe? Oh well. "The only poll that matters..."

With a win over OSU (or should it be TOSU?) CHN's PWR would put us at 6.

Interestingly, I'd bet a win over Providence & OSU would have resulted in a higher ranking had Providence went on to beat Brown.

Oh well, this is all spilt milk now. Beat Merrimack x 2!

So Pairwise is now "RPI, except in the case where team A has beaten team B head to head AND has the advantage in common games, in which case RPI doesn't matter."

Boring.

It's interesting to see that the pollsters continue to undervalue the ECAC schools relative to the PWR and KRACH rankings. It's good for about 2 spots throughout. This isn't necessarily wrong, of course. It seems to me that a poll should attempt to rank based on a perception of true talent and not just results, especially earlier in the season. We on eLF have a hard time believing that we're really a top 10 program at the moment so why should pollsters give us complete credit for our results to date if they think Michigan, for instance, has more talent. That said, the league wide downranking is almost certainly a result of nti-ECAC bias that has accumulated over the years (which in fairness we have largely earned). In previous years the polls have converged to the PWR by sometime in February. It will be interesting to see if this happens on schedule this year.

Yep, it's pretty silly. Looking at the "Pairwise Grid" is pretty pointless these days. That said, I don't remember seeing any dramatic differences between RPI and KRACH of late, so one could say that they've converged on a system that is pretty reasonable.

If you mean human ranking in the polls, you might be right, but we'd fall in PWR. If PU beats Brown, it flips their COp and RPI. They jump ahead of us, and we fall to 7.

Also, with St. Cloud's loss we now have the third best win-loss record in the country (after Q and NoDak).

With today's results Cornell is fifth in USCHO PWR.

And according to CHN, had we beaten tOSU, we'd be a comfortable #2.

Oh, well. Let's hope come late March/early April we're glad we got that stinker out of the way and our exceptionally young team learned from the experience.

Except for the Women's USA poll, I put the rest of the tables up. Unless Cornell women get back in contention, I'm forgetting about the USA poll.

The men are still sitting okay in PWR, at 8, but they do need to win.doh

We caught some nice luck in the ECAC last weekend with Colgate stealing a point from RPI and Harvard getting inexplicably bombed out. A sweep weekend and we launch into the second half solidly in the top 4. But, yes, as well as they are playing they do need to actually win.

Also, although I realize few really care, this is a vital weekend in the Ivy title race. A sweep would all but guarantee Cornell being in a three-way down the stretch with Harvard and Yale.

Just win, baby.

And being wildly optimistic, looking ahead to early February, and doing all the things I know one shouldn't do, when was the last time Cornell beat 2 teams ranked #1 in a single season?

It hasn't happened since at least 83. My guess is Ned's teams may have done it. It is possible that they have never done it.

Were there polls in the sixties and early seventies?

This is something I've been trying to discover. I believe there were several polls conducted by TV/radio stations. One in particular was IINM out of a radio station in Michigan and was reprinted in the Boston Globe and in Don Birkmeyer's hockey newsletter. I would dearly love to find a complete history of polls to fill in the details of Cornell's polling history going back to the beginning of time.

14 now. Forget it if you're 16, Robert Morris kicks you out. 15 is touchy, can't have any upsets. Have to shoot for 14, or better.

15 is not good enough this year, because it's likely that both the AH and WCHA champions will be outside the top 15.
