Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - 2 years ago
Hmm...the CU sports information team needs to do a bit of proofreading. This is from the preview for the Lehigh game on Feb 25, 2023: Last Meeting: Cornell won 9-5 on February 26, 2023 in Bethlehem, Pa. If we win this year by the same score, then they just got the date wrong by a day, eh?by heykb - Other Sports
Re: Cornell admissions - 2 years ago
CAS Ahh, the good old days that I remember. Cornell posts admission stats dating back to 1980. The total number of applications received this year are up over 300% compared to 1980 (71K vs 17K), while the total number of admits is actually down 10% this year vs 1980 (4,908 vs 5,456). How many of us older alums would be admitted if we applied today, with the admit rating falling to 6.9% from 32%by heykb - John Spencer Is Dead

Rescheduling the Friday game for Sunday afternoon is convenient for me. Living in the CET time zone, 6 hours ahead of EST, I can actually watch the game without staying up all night. As a bonus, it's a home game. I hope the guys play well.by heykb - Hockey
Re: 2019-11-30: Cornell 2 BU 0 - 5 years ago
I am sorry I wasn't able to get to the game this year. But now that I live in Spain, the trip was just a bit more inconvenient than when we lived in Philly. This year would have been particularly nice to see, since the Red are good and playing well. In past years, the RHH games have seen CU spit the bit. I'll wear my Cornell Hockey hat on game days here in Sitges and give all the local Englishby heykb - Hockey

Thanks for the link, Pete. Great to see you on here. I speak for a whole lotta Lynah folks when I say that you played exciting hockey. Thank you for that! Karl B. '77by heykb - Hockey
Re: Cornell lax @ UPenn 03/26/16 - 9 years ago
I went to the game and I saw a Big Red team that looked horrible. The first period was maybe the worst period of lacrosse by Cornell that I've witnessed in decades. They lost faceoffs, didn't win any ground balls, gave the ball away, and the score could easily have been much worse. They actually did start to play better in the 2nd period, but even so, they were just holding their own. Penn may beby heykb - Other Sports

Re: Cornell hockey at MSG every year - 12 years ago
Brilliant. I won't speak for anyone else, but ever since the ECAC/HE split, I've hoped there would be some way to ensure the BU rivalry would be kept alive. It's great that RHH has been received well enough that both universities want to continue it. I'm sure money has a part to play and that's fine. I just want to go to Cornell-BU games with my kids and grandkids. And at this point, it seemsby heykb - Hockey

ECAC does the Groupon thing for AC tix - 12 years ago
This is the link: Yeah, I know what the URL says, but it takes you to a page where the ECAC tickets are on sale for half off. You will buy each day separately and you can pick between upper and lower level seats. In their parlance, "Session 1" means Friday's two games and "Session 2" means Saturday's two games. If you know you are going to be in AC, this is a good dealby heykb - Hockey
Re: Season Review - 13 years ago
My reaction to the season is that the team has raised the bar on what success will be next year. I expect the team to work on being more consistent. I do not expect to see very many outings like the flat effort against Harvard in AC.by heykb - Hockey
Bridgeport Hockey Fest? - 13 years ago
If there is any serious talk of using the baseball stadium to do some sort of fan festival for our hypothetical Bridgeport ECAC tournament, then I would suggest looking at coordinating something with the University of Bridgeport. It's a short walk to campus and an even shorter shuttle bus ride. If nothing else, I'd coordinate a pregame get-together for elynah folks somewhere on campus.by heykb - Hockey
Bridgeport as a venue - 13 years ago
Re: Bridgeport I'd love to tell you that Bridgeport has all sorts of wonderful things, but mostly it doesn't. The arena is 10 minutes walking distance to the University of Bridgeport campus and the end of mile-long Seaside Park. Not that the park is a big draw in March. There's not a lot to do on a Saturday in Bridgeport, but you can find a good sports bar pretty easily and it's only aboutby heykb - Hockey
Re: Happy Randy Wilson Day! - 13 years ago
Oh that's right - that game was Randy's last game in college. He was able to go play professionally, pretty much immediately after the game in March of 1979. It's wonderful that Randy's association with the game is that it allowed him to have several months with his dad. I'm sure those memories trump anything that happened in Ithaca. Thanks for stopping by, Marti. It's great to get the updateby heykb - Hockey

I'll be there +2 fellow mid-70's alumni for Friday/Saturday games. My youngest son would normally tag along but this weekend is his high school play. I am doing a real schedule rhumba to get to all of the places I need to be on Saturday. As it is, I'll be hard pressed to get to AC by game time on Friday evening.by heykb - Hockey

On p. 24 of this week's Sports Illustrated (dated Jan 16, 2012), there is a picture of the Rangers' Girardi and Lundqvist. Uncredited but actually dominating the pic is Colin Greening. Re: MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 13 years ago
If we were to have Cornell-BU alternating with Cornell-Wisc, I'd plan my Thanksgiving around it every year. I just don't believe people would tire of it. I believe it would become a tradition. In New Orleans, Southern plays Grambling in football every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That's one tough ticket to get; think Alabama-Auburn. Because it's a tradition. Re: MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 13 years ago
IMO, one reason the Saturday after T'giving date has worked is that there are a bazillion Cornell people who are in greater NYC for the weekend anyway. If you have to go visit Mom/Dad/Aunt Florence/Grandma in the area for the holiday, you are sooo ready for some excuse to get a few hours out of the house and Red Hot Hockey is purpose-built for that. Given that it has been a complete sellout eby heykb - Hockey
Re: MSG Hockey v. Michigan - 13 years ago
I'd be content to alternate the MSG game. BU in the odd numbered years and Michigan/Wisconsin/Minnesota in the even years. I'd love to see a tradition develop where we play Wisconsin. Besides they wear red/white. It can still be Red Hot Hockey...by heykb - Hockey
Connecticut & Cornell hockey - 13 years ago
OK, the subject line is a little bit misleading because this is really about my being newly relocated to Bridgeport and knowing zero people outside of work. The background info is that I got a new job in June that has parked my butt in CT for Monday through Friday for the foreseeable future. Re: Cornell vs. Colgate in Newark - ticket options - 14 years ago
Bill, Just gotta point out that CU not only has Ultimate Frisbee, but they are ranked in the top 10 in the country and have advanced to the Nationals the past two years. We have a very good team indeed. If Greg isn't quite that good, there is even a respectable B team for him to join. They play in plenty of tournaments and every year several players move up to the main squad. Karl '77 (Fouby heykb - Hockey

Re: 2010 Post-season Thread - 15 years ago
I ran into an Ottawa Senators scout in the hotel after the UHN loss. They have the rights to Colin Greening. The scout said a couple of interesting things. He noted that Schafer's style of play "is no fun the for the players" and he thinks if the style were a bit more offense oriented (for example using two forecheckers routinely), that Cornell would be very tough in the NCAA's everby heykb - Hockey

OK, suppose I'm going to be in Albany on Friday but coming from Philadelphia... As of 4:30 Monday, the shirts aren't available on the Store website. How do I get the shirts ordered and delivered to (either Phila or Albany) so that they can be worn Friday evening? Note also that store says they are closing for inventory on Wednesday and won't process orders after 4:00 Tuesday. Nice timing, sby heykb - Hockey
Re: Just out......#25 in basketball - 15 years ago
This morning on ESPN Radio, Jay Bilas gave the Cornell men a nice shout-out. He said one NBA scout called Wittman "an assassin" who would wind up in the NBA. Then Bilas mentioned both Dale and Foote and said CU would not be an easy out. I think it's safe to say that the Big Red will not be sneaking up on whoever they get in the first round.by heykb - Other Sports

Last weekend, I took my wife, my son, and a fellow Cornellian (who occasionally lurks here) up to Princeton for the Ultimate Frisbee collegiate regional tournament. Cornell (team name = "Buds" was seeded 2nd of the 16 teams attending. All the teams had to qualify in their sections, so none of the teams would be pushovers.
