3-0 Penn now. I'd have to think they have a pretty good shot to get past Syracuse, too. Nice thing for Cornell is that they're playing on the normal week gap

Final, 3-0.Al DeFlorio
Maryland 5, Fairleigh Ridiculous 2; Cornell hosts Maryland Sunday at 2.
Penn 2, Rutgers 0 in second half.
FYI, Maryland fan site says the head soccer coach salary as of 2018 was $210,000. [www.testudotimes.com] (John Tillman was in the $300K range back then.) In perspective: ESPN says Seton Hall basketball coach jumped to the Terps this year for $4M a year. Why it's the BIG Ten.

Cornell scores twice in last 6 minutes to take 2-0 lead, but Terps score. Two minutes left!
Edit 2-1 final.
Apparently first time since the 70’s they’ve advanced this far!

Cornell wins against a good Maryland team that didn't really get going until the 2nd half. Defense held strong until the goals came and Friedberg was a big part of that although he couldn't get the shutout. On to the winner of Penn/Syracuse

Some wild results already. The 2, 4, 6 and 8 seeds were all eliminated before the QF. All three of the QF teams so far are unseeded. Of the 8 paths to the QF, we are one of three that has two seeded teams.

Looks like a distinctly uncomfortable day. Syracuse had the run of play in the first part of the first half, but Cornell started serving some balls in behind their defense in the latter part. Shots 7–3 'Cuse.
Cornell has had two corners, and, although nothing really came of them, corners on a day like this are enormously dangerous. If I were the Cornell coach, I might try to encourage players to make some extending runs down the wings to play into the willingness of the Syracuse D to give up corners. It's natural to try (like Syracuse is) to force the ball up the middle in these conditions, since shots from out in front of the goal are very dangerous for keepers with bad footing, even when taken from a bit further out than normal. But if they're going to give you corners, take 'em.
My feeling is that this game will open up pretty quickly in the second half. For whom? Don't know. But if one of the teams puts in a goal, I think that'll start a flood in that team's direction as the other team starts playing a bit desperately. Bad to have to try too hard in sloppy conditions.

Still scoreless 10 minutes into the 2nd half, but Syracuse dominating possession. Friedberg with a great save to keep it scoreless.

Yep, we had another great chance off the corner, then SU with a great individual effort on the counter to take a 1-0 lead. We have 6 minutes to try to extend the season.

We pushed at the end, but never a great chance as SU wins 1-0. SU was the more athletic and stronger team, but we had some chances, especially Kingii’s header off a corner that caught the post.
Cuse is an excellent team, and certainly a threat to win it all, although next week they have to get past a very good Vermont squad.

Unfortunate result to end a very nice season and hopefully NCAA appearances are more of a regular occurrence in the next few years. Syracuse is quick team that was on the ball the whole game but they certainly didn't need the referee's help. He really didn't want to call many fouls on Syracuse after the 1st half apparently.

Very close one. My only beef with Cornell's play was a lot of wasted throw-ins. Once again, I would have encouraged marching down the sidelines, putting pressure on a pretty suspect Syracuse back line by keeping it as wide as possible.
But we did force many, many corners, and, in the end, it was... so, so close!

Can you elaborate on this please? I see EPL teams do this and never understand why. Is the idea to string out the defense in a vertical line (since the far defender has to keep marking his man who hugs *his* sideline) to increase the gaps between them as wide as possible, setting up the threat of passing to a man diving into one of those gaps?

Following the chatter regarding the USMNT and World Cup, it seems many top players are going straight to the pros, from MLS academies for talented teenagers to MLS, and then for very elite players perhaps to European club teams and the USMNT.
Does anyone reading this have a handle on how this is affecting college players, both in the sense of who's choosing to go to college and who's being drafted by pro teams?

Many of my colleagues here at work are big soccer fans, so I pick up a few things. My sense from them has always been that any player with USMNT dreams, or thoughts of playing at an elite level in Europe, skips college altogether.

To say that any kid with dreams or thoughts of playing USMNT or in Europe goes to Europe is a tremendous overstatement. They're really precious few opportunities over there. I think it's more fair to say that any kid who's been identified as having a possible future chance of reaching those levels-considers the possibility of going to Europe.
Very few do go though.
Given how few are going to Europe or playing on professional contracts with the domestic academies, I'd be shocked if college soccer was losing even 50 players a year because of kids skipping altogether or going to Europe. (Or skipping college to go right to MLS.)
I can't imagine this has much effect on who's getting drafted.
