Speaking of which, hockey loses Jack Malone (Delbarton Prep, NJ) because he's a senior this year but has a year of eligibility left. CJ Kirst (Delbarton Prep, NJ) is a lacrosse senior next year but I believe he has a year of eligibility left. Do we lose him for his fourth and best year for spring 2025 lacrosse? Sheesh, the Ivy League has become a group of feeder schools.semsox
billhoward
We're discussing who belongs behind the cage at X, who should be out front, who on the wings.
On a simpler level, with Michael Long back, is this or is this not the most powerful attack in Division 1 this year?
A question worthy of asking, though it would be surprising if so considering it's likely the worst Cornell attack of the last 3 calendar years. Even with Kirst's development, seems hard to believe we'd take this year's attack over Long/Kirst/Piatelli. And since I'm feeling especially bitter, I'd have everyone consider what could have been in the cancelled 2021 season with a selection of Teat/Long/Piatelli/Kirst to fill in however you'd like.

He could plan ahead and do the thing Pannell (and Andreev in hockey) did and just withdraw for a semester and not graduate?? I can’t remember how that worked when they knew they had an extra eligibility year.

For lacrosse players, wouldn't he just need to take the next two Fall semesters off, and play go to school for the next two springs?

You also have the issue of classes you need to take being offered in the spring and the sequence issues sometimes.

Unless the special COVID eligibility rules will apply to CJ, the Ivy League usually requires an academic reason to stay around for a 5th year or 9th semester. That is where it can get tricky.

Acknowledging we likely won't know with any certainty until late next year, my baseline assumption would be that CJ will use all of his eligibility at Cornell.

Watched the replay. Nice win today. Yes, good ball movement overall and nice shooting. Great move by Coach Buczek to move CJ to the crease attack position. It's difficult to double team that position without leaving the defense vulnerable in other areas. CJ got some nice looks and drained most of them. I'm not sure how I feel about Mikey Long on the wing and Billy Coyle at X. Long makes such good decisions at X moving the ball quickly to areas of defensive weakness. I'm not sure that can be taught. Yes, he'll be effective and he will score on the wing, but I think he'd be more dangerous behind the goal.
The defense was great early. It seems like we get ahead and then ease up a little bit. Or the opposing team starts to figure out what will work. Ierlan had a good day overall. Marquette scored on several outside shots. I'm sure he feels he should have stopped those.
Great job on faceoffs. Cascadden has been such a bright spot this season, and Angelo is playing well too.
Camera work: Someone needs to tell the camera person to move the camera s l o w l y.
I expect Army to be a hard fought, close game. Can't wait.
Just guessing here, but I think they don't want to move Long behind the cage, at least yet, in an effort to protect him from aggravating whatever is ailing him. Probably more risk of doing that trying to dodge from X.
If so, then at some point he & Billy may be able to switch. This will make it hard for opponents to assign long sticks: defending a distributor/dodger who plays from behind the goal is a bit different than defending someone on the wing.
I would like to see what happens with Long at X and Coyle at the wing. With Coyle's excellent speed, he could cause the defense problems by dodging from the wing. Obviously, the coaches know their players, and they know more about lacrosse than I'll ever know. But I remember watching Long operate when he was healthy, and he just seemed like a natural at X. He has great vision, he's accurate with his passes, and doesn't force anything,

I don't get why grad students are not considered students. It would be up to them to determine if they can manage academic workload, practice, and 7-8 road games a year.

Should be a decent game at Army, 12 noon start at Michie Stadium, their football field. Army has top-ten wins over Rutgers and Loyola MD. They are essentially tied with Cornell in the rankings except Army's RPI is barely in the top 20. Army plays 4 top-20 teams: Rutgers, Loyola, Cornell, BU. Perhaps the 12-to-13 place discrepancy between Army's RPI and poll numbers is Army's only loss was the season opener, followed by nine wins. Army's last four games have wins by margins of 2 (Lehigh), 5 Loyola (good win), 5 (Bucknell) and 1 (1-7 Colgate).
Right now (day before the game) it's 92 degrees, near-cloudless, and a bunch of auto editors are bopping around the West Point area in Hyundai Ioniq 6 EVs (fabulous cars) after overnighting at the Thayer Hotel. Saturday it will be around 70 degrees but a 50% chance of rain. Better for the players.

Individual game threads would be good. It might clutter the forum with additional threads but by season's end they'll drop to the second page so, no harm done.

2 games left In reg season.
Brown who I hope we play on the RD better than we did vs Harvard.
Princeton for the Ivy Reg season title most likely on SR day. They also lost 2 players for the season vs SU the other day.

I watched Brown lose to Yale today 16-10. Brown jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but Yale led 9-8 at halftime and held Brown to 2 goals in the second half. Brown's faceoff man dominated, winning 22 out of 30. But Brown's defense was shaky, and Yale scored at least 3 goals in transition, including one play where Chris Lyons, who had 7 goals, came in alone on the goalie.upprdeck

Like Harvard, it's a game we should win. But we didn't do the job at Harvard, and hopefully the same thing won't happen at Brown.

A couple of thoughts: If we shot like we did against Penn State or Harvard, we would have lost to Army. The team is moving the ball and getting some confusion in the defense. If they do that well, eventually someone will come open, and it doesn't matter who.
I like the spread offense and moving Kirst to the crease attack position. I wonder what would happen if we moved him to the top of the zone more, as we did in a previous game. Or even sent him to X. Moving him around would take the defense out of the schemes they practiced.
Second, we can beat anyone in the country. We are that good this year. On the flip side, we can lose to a lot of teams as well because of the parity. So the ILT and NCAA tournaments should be a hoot.
I will say I'm especially concerned about Notre Dame. They do a lot of things well and they look tough.

Week 10 in the D1 media poll (4/17) and Cornell is 6th again. (graphic below)
Teams above us win, they gain a position (Duke, Maryland). The team we beat, Army, drops a position, from 7th to 8th. Notre Dame, the only one-loss team, remains atop the polls. Duke took over second place this week, with a 15-14 win over visiting Virginia, which dropped from 2 to 4.
The remaining two teams on the Cornell schedule: at Brown, not receiving votes. Then 4/29, Princeton, receiving votes. Penn and Yale, possible ILT opponents, are 15 and 19.
In RPI (link: NC$$) has the top ten as:

Big surprise here is Army, which was #19 RPI at the time. H2H over Rutgers in the only plausible explanation for this, but it's a real departure from the official criteria.

I haven’t watched the top 5 teams play, but I think it’s hard to argue Cornell is clearly better than any of them. Our SOS is just that much weaker. Maybe we should be fifth, in accordance with our RPI, but I don’t see an argument that we should be higher than that.

One of the things I loved about DeLuca's defenses is that the slides were vicious. They landed like hammers, and the ball usually found the ground. Sometimes I think we hesitate with the slides, but they seemed to come stronger in the second half (what I saw of the second half) in the Army game. That's something I'm going to be watching for against Brown. What will you be looking for?

Abladian played in the Marquette game. It was either Barry Leonard or Tom Lafalce who said that he was still learning the Cornell offense. He's a junior now. Maybe the plan is to make next year a big year for him.

He played in 3 games and had 2 goals vs Marq and nothing since. It's not like we havn't had a few games with leads to have him play. He missed all of March as well after playing vs Hobart. Have to think there is some injury issue.

Good point. I was thinking maybe a second line--depth is always important as we get to the NCAA tourament. It's probably too late for this year, though.

His position is attack. Was he playing attack or midfield against Marquette? That would be one way for him to see more playing time.

1) Since the great criteria change of 2009 (the horrific seeding of 2007 forced the NCAA to fix it), it is not at all corrupt. It is, however, somewhat random.Trotsky
How corrupt is the tourny selection now? It's not purely deterministic like hockey, right? Does the Baltimore Mafia still have room to do their thing?
2) It is not deterministic like hockey.
3) No.

Huh. He played the entire 2019, 2022, and 2023 seasons. 2020 got canceled after 5 games; 2021 got canceled entirely. The fact he still has another year of NCAA eligibility suggests that the shortened 2020 year did not count towards eligibility? So in effect a player could be a college lacrosse player for six seasons?mike1960

Likely only if Cornell first beats Duke, UVa, or ND, who will be the top 3 seeds. Cornell is looking at a 6 to 8 seed.
Unless Cornell loses to Yale, then they could be unseeded and sent to PSU in first round.

He wasn't bad at all against Penn State. He allowed 10 goals on 31 shots, or 67%.
The problem is we had 2 guys shooting 60 percent of our shots and making only 4 total.

He mixes his opinions in with his discussion of each top 20 team. Of interest to Cornell fans is the discussion on evaluating attackmen on more than goals and assists that's discussed with his #12 team, Michigan.

Yale is going to be a tough foe on Friday. Even though Cornell beat Yale easily during the regular season, that was six weeks ago. Yale has a 5-game winning streak during which it has outscored its opponents 88-52. I've seen them play in person twice and their offense is explosive, especially in transition.

My guess is no, the ILT winner gets it. Unless it's Princeton, then we might sneak in.CU2007
What if we lose in the final? Or lose in the semi?
ACC & B1G will claim 3 seeds each, BET and ILT winners likely the other 2.

It should be a good game. The good news is that the season is not on the line. Win or lose, Cornell is in the Big Dance. It would be nice to have a home game, but the main thing is to get in and win four in a row. I hope we see the offense working really well together and the defense communicating and allowing no easy shots.
As Maximus Decimus Meridius says, "Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together."

most places have cornell as a 6-7-8 see now.. Losing at best they are an 8. Some Metrics have the IVY as the 8 see anyway.
If yale wins out they will Jump Cornell for sure getting to 10-4 over Cornells 11-3. Penn probably needs to win 1 to stay in the mix.

RPI Poll Team 7 6 Cornell 9 10 Penn 10 11 Yale 17 20 Princeton
RPI is a major part of the who gets in, who gets seeded where, who gets home games criteria. Suggests Cornell is in the NCAA tournament. Suggests Princeton needs to win the ILT to get in.

2023 Ivy League All-Ivy
Cornell really dominated the All-Ivy choices this year. 4 first team for Cornell -- Kirst, Adler, Ierlan, Kelleher; Buczek COTY 2 years in a row, Kirst POTY. First-team 4 Cornell (Kirst, Adler, Ierlan unanimous), 4 Penn, 3 Yale, Princeton 2, Brown 1 (FOGO Matt Gunty, 63%).

Terps dismantled Hop in the 2nd B1G semi, winning 14-9, face Michigan in the final. I expect Maryland to easily avenge their regular-season loss.
Top 4 seeds will go to the ACC and the Terps. Cornell has a shot at the #5 seed with an ILT win, especially if the final is over Penn.
Looking too far ahead, Cornell will need to play as well as possible, and wish a dash of luck, to have a chance against any of the top 4 in the quarterfinals.

Fortunately, one can say the same thing about the top 4 teams. They're all good enough to win the whole shebang. So a team that plays up to its ability and has a bit of luck has a great chance of winning.

I don't think other teams are better than us. We have strengths at all the key positions, and, as dbilmes says, when we peak or play our best, we can beat anyone. We know who we are now. When we play team offense and team defense, we are really good.

Maybe we get up to 7 in RPI if Yale loses to Princeton tomorrow. You’d think that would go a long way towards getting us a first round home game.

Three games left.
I assume Duke > Merrimack.
Then the top-11 RPI are fixed, with only the order of 7-8-9 still to be decided by the other 2 games.
Amazingly, only one of these 11 definitely gets an AQ!
1. Duke
2. Notre Dame
3. Virginia
4. Johns Hopkins
5. Georgetown AQ
6. Maryland
…
10. Denver
11. Penn
Princeton > Yale:
7. Penn State
8. Cornell
9. Yale
Yale > Princeton, Army > Loyola
7. Yale AQ
8. Cornell
9. Penn State
Yale > Princeton, Loyola > Army
7. Yale AQ
8. Penn State
9. Cornell
Cornell has a shot at the #8 seed if Yale loses. I think PSU gets a seed no matter what. Yale likley gets the seed if they win.

9:00 pm selection show? That's kind of late for people of a certain age.

Wow. Maybe Yale makes a game of it, but it's hard for teams to gear up again after a big, emotional win.

Yale left it on the field on Friday. This can only help Cornell tonite.
Big Red needs to put Friday nite in the rear view and move on quickly. Ierlan is a seasoned vet and will come back I'm sure. Face off and defense need to step up. Go Big Red

LOL! What a perfect way to express that sentiment.
Agree that we all need to wait to see what the committee decides.

Foy ignores losses to the top 20, which is not consistent with either the official criteria or with past committee results.

Duke, ND, PSU and #8 Yale or Cornell would be targeted for the quarters in Albany, and UVA, MD, Hop and Georgetown for Annapolis. So Duke will be #1 to play #8 and ND and PSU would be seeded to meet in the second round (e.g., #3 ND and #6 PSU). Then MD and Hop would be #4 and #5 leaving UVA at #2 and Georgetown at #7. Would also work if ND #2 and UVA #3. Then just flip PSU's and Georgetown's seedings. We shall see soon.

(4) Maryland v. Army
(5) Penn State v. Princeton
(3) Notre Dame v. Utah
