I think Georgetown is beatable if we make it past OSU. Always hate having to beat a team twice in a season, but have been encouraged by how we played against Princeton and Yale. Still stand by what I said several weeks ago that the ceiling of this team changed pretty significantly with Blake's injury. Would love to see this team with a healthy Blake and Lombardi

Well designed and executed play out of the time out. They must have spotted some tendencies. The skip pass drew three defenders, including the crease attack defender, leaving a shooter in front of the crease wide open.

Handley played a key role. He took the first pass from the TO, which brought a slide and double-team. Obviously, Richmond was afraid he was the primary scorer in Penn's plan. But instead of taking a shot, he quickly passed over to the right wing (jersey #?), who quickly passed to a forward occupying the space opened up by the slide. From there Penn was just a quick stick away from advancing. Very well done, Penn!

Since I live nearby, I went to Yale game. Yale was lucky to advance. They won mainly because their goalie had a better game than the St. Joe's goalie. Otherwise, neither team's defense was impressive. The St. Joe's faceoff specialist is one of the best in the country, and that helped keep them in the game. The key play came in the third quarter when St. Joe's had a two-goal lead, won the faceoff, but then had a long stick middie take an ill-advised, long-range shot before St. Joe's could start running its offense. The Yale goalie made an easy save and that led to a Yale transition goal. Instead of a potential three-goal lead for St. Joe's, it was now a one-goal game.

Ivy League goes 3-1 on day one. Tough draw for Brown--I do not relish facing Ohio State a second time this season but I think that's preferable to playing Virginia.
Yesterday I rooted for all of the home teams--today (with one huge, obvious exception) I will root for all of the road teams.

Why was our goal waved off?
CJ ending up in the goal mouth.
We got what we wanted on the man up. Nifty set up with the attack coming around the crease. I didn't see if it was a bad pass or if it was knocked down.
We need to find offense somewhere.

It looks like CJ and Piatelli are going to put the d-man on their back and head to the goal. That may yield some goals eventually. When we are man up, everyone is in motion to get open for a pass. Not in our standard offense. If feels like we're doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Billy Coyle tried to invert and to go the cage twice. No luck so far.

The reasons for Ben's departure were not that simple. Andy Noel did not blame it on his handling of the hazing/partying incident. There was something else at issue that has never been publicly disclosed although there has been a tremendous amount of speculation over the years. We may never know what actually prompted his termination since the parties have no reason to share the details with us. And although I have always been really curious, I also acknowledge that I don't really have any right to know.

It will be interesting to see how much of a story line this is or isn’t in the week ahead. I doubt the lax media will press hard.

Does anyone know where you can find the highlights of the Ohio State game? The "highlights" link on cornellbigred.com does have footage from the game set to bad music, but I was looking for highlights from the broadcast.

Awesome win yesterday. The lack of coverage and support on campus for the lacrosse team is nuts given how successful the program is. The Sun barely covers lax, still having published nothing on yesterday’s game. The crowds are sparse. There is no highlight package up. Even when highlights go up, it’s usually just a subset of the Cornell goals, with no opposing goals or other big moments. And the replays start just a second or two before each goal, so there is never any view into how the plays develop. Even the official Cornell lacrosse social media pages often do not list the final score of the games or post highlights. Neither the official team Instagram page nor the team Twitter account has posted the final from yesterday’s game (the Twitter account later retweeted an article about the game, which happens to list the final score). The team Facebook page hasn’t been updated since October 2020. I don’t know who manages these things, but I would hope there is enough interest in the lacrosse team to at least demand score updates, highlights of all the goals, and an article the next day in the school paper that covers the biggest game of the year.

Final exams are underway, including tests scheduled for this past weekend. I suspect this had a lot to do with attendance and Cornell media coverage. And the weather sucked. Why go out in the rain, thunder and lightning when you have ESPN?
The Sun barely covers any Cornell athletics team other than men's hockey, especially when they are not "publishing." The Sun only "publishes" when classes are in session, a holdover from the pre-Internet days. It drives me nuts that a reporter and an editor can't manage to get it together to write, edit and post even bare-bones stories about athletic events other than men's hockey. The Internet is supposed to boost media coverage, not subvert it.
As for Athletics, let's cut them some slack. There are only a handful of media people on the staff and they have families. The game was scheduled on May 8 to be played in Ithaca on Sunday, May 15. It was delayed for several hours due to weather to further complicate media activiy and they did get a story up last night. The game was televised by ESPN which might impact access [and rights?] to posting highlights and archiving the complete game. Chayse's goal was posted on Twitter pretty quickly for our amazement and delight.

Re-play is on TV now if your cable provider has ESPNU.

Thank you--my cable provider does offer ESPNU, but I don't pay for that channel, so I am stucking looking for highlights. This is pretty good:
Inside Lacrosse article has 1 minute highlight package, plus individual highlights
How does Ierlan get credit for a goal? It looks like it went it in off of the stick of Piatelli. Shouldn't he get the goal, with an assist to Ierlan? Not that I would want that, because a goalie goal is really cool, and a much better look for Cornell than what Blaze Riordan did to us a few years ago.

If you look at the video of Ierlan's goal, Piatelli and the goalie both jump for the ball and it is redirected into the net. Apparently it hit the goalie stick rather than John's; hence the goalie goal.

On to the quarterfinals!
Massey gives Cornell a 63% probability of beating Delaware, vs what would have been 30% against Georgetown.
Reminds me of 2010, when Cornell was the #7 seed. Needed triple OT to beat Loyola in the first round, and was set to go against #2 Cuse (who had beaten Cornell 8-7 at Schoellkopf in the regular season), but Cuse was upset by Army in OT. Cornell then crushed Army 14-5 to reach the final four. (Only to lose to unseeded Notre Dame in the semis, 12-7, but we do not speak of that.)

Delaware is an excellent team, especially on the defense. This is a small sample size (I watched one game against GTown), but here is what I saw. Cornell will have to work hard for goals. Delaware kept a high-powered GTown to 9 goals, Penn to 8 (earlier this year), and Princeton to 10. They play disciplined lacrosse and they time their slides extremely well, as one would expect from a DeLuca defense. Their long poles are skilled. They will pick your pocket and take away the ball, esp. a guy named Owen Grant. And they don't make a lot of mistakes.
The offense is also very good but not as strong as their D. They often play a box-style, Canadian offense, with a lot of interior passing and good cuts to the goal, especially down the alley with a feed from the X. One of their attacks also likes to drift to the backdoor when the ball's on the perimeter. One of their attacks, Robinson (Ontario), will stick a shot in the corner with a left-handed behind-the-back shot, French pastry, as Barry says. They have a midfielder, Bieda, who shoots hard and accurately from outside. They have effective distributors from X. I'll be interested to see who Adler shuts down this game. I'm guessing Robinson.
Their goalie played a great game. He had a lot of great stops and didn't make mistakes on the clears. Their FOFO did not win a lot of draws, but their wing play is outstanding, so Delaware ended up with several possessions off the draw anyway.
I'm not any good at predicting wins and losses, so I won't try. This is clearly a team that Cornell can beat, but Delaware was incredibly impressive in their win against GTown.

I just worry about the 2009 debacle (no, the one that actually happened) when Cornell (3 seed) “just” had to get past Bemidji (4 seed) to get to the Frozen Four. Burned into my brain, as our group of -15 Cornellians heard the news of our loss just after finishing dinner at Phantom Ranch (bottom of the Grand Canyon). Ugh.CU77

Some might argue the NCAA serves at the will of its member colleges and universities. They used to be arrogant pricks. In the last couple years as things went against the NCAA, the arrogance part has lessened, if not quite to the level of Gandhi's "these are my people, I am their leader, I must follow them."CU77
Re video, as I understand it the NCAA retains rights to all video of championship games, it's not available for schools to clip and post highlights.
If the NCAA really bans clips for the teams to post on their websites, then the action video becomes fan clips on social media. The NCAA going back at least a decade has tried to ban fan use of "professional type cameras" which is subject to considerable leeway on the parts of stadium ushers. Although I once got in the 300mm f/2.8, which is about the size of a Javelin launcher. And I was told at another lax tournament event to take a 3-inch-long mini zoom back to car.
More than a decade ago, in the early days of blogging, the NCAA would threaten to evict journalists from the pressbox for live-blogging. That ended at a regional NCAA baseball event in some mid-market city like Scranton or Louisville. The NCAA evicted the local paper, which had been up to then a booster for the games, or told them not to come back for the next day's games. The paper shut down all coverage, even the agate type scores. The NCAA relented a day later. They've made their peace with the media and even come to understand that social media and live-blogging increases interest in the sport.
Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal, was told in 2014 to lose his non-NCAA-sanctioned cat mug from the NCAA basketball press table. The only cups allowed are the ones with the name of the "official hydration beverage of the NCAA." Gay turned it into a column: [www.wsj.com]
Jason Gay, WSJ
Like other people in the media, I have been amused for a while at a strictly enforced NCAA policy regarding cups. As in paper cups. The NCAA forbids outside cups at tournament games. It requests that beverages are consumed in official NCAA cups with a logo of a Prominent Hydration Drink. It takes this rule seriously; there are a lot of jokes about the Cup Police, and at the floor-level entrances to the court there are signs in capital letters that remind you of this rule. ONLY NCAA CUPS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT, the sign reads. Next to the sign, there's a stack of NCAA cups with the Prominent Hydration Drink logo, ready for your obedient use.
