I saw on Saturday's game that the words to the alma mater were printed and distributed in the student section. I was speaking with some of my friends and it seems that at the next game, printouts should be made saying, "Cheers can be found at www.elynah.com" or something like that. Many and I should say most, do not know of this website. Furthermore, what easier way to learn the cheers than to sit at your computer as you surf and go to this website. It will be easy, save paper, and I think many will actually go here and skim at the very least. It can't hurt, right?

Good idea, but someone actually needs to print that out and pass it out. By all means, do it for part of your section and see where that gets you.
Seeing the cheers written out can be helpful, especially with lose/goon distinctions and the like, but I'd say the best way to learn the cheers is to ask someone around you that looks like they know what they're doing for help. At least, that's what I did.
(I have no idea how I found this site. I suspect it had something to do with the cheer page.)

Oh yes - there's nothing worse than going to lynah for x number of years, and then have freshmen come in and totally f-up a good cheer. Thats why i always yell GOON at the top of my lungs. I know its pointless, but its worth a try. I remember that back in '96 I found a printed copy of the cheers page, and it helped me. I think someone out there would be willing to kill a tree for the greater good of the Faithful.

When I was a freshman, i found it a little intimidating to actually ask the faithful what exactly they were saying. I took me awhile to find out about this website, and though most cheers can be heard and learned, some are too muddled to decipher (ex, "See ya, _____, You Goon!!!"
With all the idiots are you saying "lose" it can be difficult.

Asking someone around you that looks like they know what they're doing is still likely to produce a response of "See ya, asshole. You lose.'"
Jeez. It sounds so stupid everytime I think about it. Why would we say you lose!?

Because they have to go sit in the penalty box for two minutes.
On the other hand, why do we say "You goon!" when the player in question grabbed someone's stick, or kept playing without a helmet, or was the sixth skater on the ice?

Because "goon" is a fun word to say?

The Alma Mater used to be in the game programs but I looked at the one I bought this past weekend and it's not there anymore (although there are PAGES upon PAGES of ads). If people really want to learn the words, they're pretty easy to find on Google.

Cornell University Alma Mater
Verse 1 and 2
Far above Cayuga's waters
With its waves of blue
Stands our noble Alma Mater
Glorious to view
Lift the chorus
Speed it onward
Loud her praises tell
Hail to thee our Alma Mater
Hail, all hail, Cornell!
Far above the busy humming
Of the bustling town
Reared against the arch of heaven
Looks she proudly down
Lift the chorus
Speed it onward
Loud her praises tell
Hail to thee our Alma Mater
Hail, all hail, CORNELL !

Hm. For some reason, I always thought that was a Slaphot reference...

Oh, so that's the Alma Mater! Oh, thank you so much! I always thought it was Sanskrit for "Go Red"...

While we're at it...
"Give My Regards to Davy" aka the Cornell fight song aka why the band is playing "Give My Regards to Broadway" after every goal:
Give my regards to Davy
Remember me to Tee Fee Crane
Tell all the pikers on the Hill
That I'll be back again
Tell them just how I busted
Lapping up the high, highball
We'll all have drinks at Theodore Zinck's
When I get back next fall!
These kids today with their not singing and their iPods.

The History of Davy - from Reference.com
"Give My Regards to Davy" is Cornell University's primary fight song. The song's lyrics were written by Charles Tourison '1905, W. L. Umstad '1906; and Bill Forbes '1906, a trio of roommates at Beta Theta Pi, and then set to the tune of George M. Cohan's "Give My Regards to Broadway".
The song refers to a fictional encounter between an anonymous freshman (a "piker"
and David "Davy" Hoy, the registrar and secretary for the commitee on student conduct, and Professor of Languages and the first Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Thomas F. "Tee Fee" Crane revolving around the freshman's expulsion on account of bingedrinking. David Hoy was known for his ferocity as a strict diciplinarian. Professor Crane, on the otherhand, was generally well-liked among students.
"Theodore Zinck's" was a bar in downtown Ithaca that has since closed. It's legend still lives on in the annual event "Zinck's Night", which is celebrated worldwide by Cornellians.
