Lynah over Yost

Help Lynah Faithful,

I am now up at Michigan after four years as a member of the faithful. The folks up here claim their home ice is better than Lynah! I’ve been to the games, and they are no comparison, but the Michigan fans don’t listen to subjective explanations. Does anyone have the old pages of stats and history of Lynah so I can show those folks just where they can put there Yost?

If you look for a newspaper column back in 1997 (approx) when we last played at Yost, there's a beautiful article talking about how their fans learned all their cheers from us when we played them in NCAA tournament (back in 1990 or 91). The article claims that Michigan hockey's rise to prominence began when they learned how to be fans from the Lynah Faithful. I was there (Mich) for the game in 97 and read the article so it definitely exists. Good luck!

Here's a Sports Illustrated article from last year which credits the Cornell fans with "educating" the Yost fans:
[sportsillustrated.cnn.com]
There was also an article in a Michigan paper in the '90's that quotes Berenson crediting the traveling Faithful for teaching the Michigan fans how to be passionate about their team.

Lost in Yost, not sure what you're looking for as far as "proving" anything. TBRW doesn't seem to have a complete breakdown of home-vs-away record for Cornell, but in the ECAC RS, Cornell appears to be 297-95-30 (.739) at home and 279-197-28 (.581) on the road. That's actually more different than I thought it would be - no idea how that stacks up against Michigan's home and away records, though.

Also, while it is true that Michigan's fans became more vocal during the early 90's and the team began to get better during that same period, which is the chicken and which is the egg? Let's not forget that Michigan BEAT us in 1991, so their program was already on its way back up before their fans learned our cheers.

It can be found in several places on this forum:

Or on the pep band's press page:

Or in my apartment, where I still have the original paper.

Michigan fans found religion a long time ago, and logical argument will be a waste of your time. Two suggestions:

Suggest a road trip to Lynah to settle it.
Relax, and enjoy the ride. Hope for vindication in the NCAA's.

actually there was another article just last year in USA Hockey saying all the same things... But then they went ahead and ranked lynah 2nd and Yost 1st anyway... I'm pretty sure it was discussed on elynah when it came out...

With MSU coming from Yost recently, whoever is the USCHO or Sun or Ithaca Journal reported, it would be a great question to ask a few of the players to compare the two rink atmospheres. Especially since they're very familar with Yost, but will have just been through their first Lynah experience.

For the record: anyone who watched the MSU(ck) players stay on the ice much longer than usual should note that this was an obvious jab at the Faithful and the Big Red players. I'd be interested to know if they did this when they tied Michigan at Yost last weekend. Just some food for thought. Here's to getting back in the win column next weekend!

Complete bush league move by MSU. Cornell usually has twice as many fans on the road and you never see them go over to the fans on the way out and salute them. They'll raise their sticks as the leave the ice which I think is fine. Unbelievable third period for Cornell and I believe they will return to the win column in a big way next weekend. Any debate as to which rink has better fans, there is no question after this weekend. The students were louder and just better than I have ever seen them.

Just FYI, I was at the game last weekend at Yost and MSU did not act like jackasses and refuse to get off the ice. They gave a moving stick salute. Clearly tonight's actions were directed to piss off the crowd.

I've seen Cornell go over to the Big Red road fans for a salute before leaving the ice. So don't get overly worked up about this.

JDeafv and I spoke with one of MSU's assistant coaches at a couple of different points over the weekend. Before Saturday's game I asked him how Lynah compared to Yost, and he said that while the volume is comparable, he thought that the students at Yost were loud because it was the cool thing to do, whereas we're loud because we actually care and want to help the team. He also said that if Michigan goes behind it can get really quiet at Yost, while (as we saw during the third period Saturday night) we just get louder.

You don't see the sort of gloating we saw Saturday at most rinks in the league. I think that's pretty meaningful.
