Losing 7-1 to BU, whose starting goaltender is playing his third game at the NCAA level and is still wearing his old team's pads, at TD Garden and having to put in your backup sieve after your starter sieve lets in 5 in the 2nd period... what can I say except HARVARD SUCKS?

Here I am, all excited to see Harvard's roster get shredded by an apparent ban on international students (look, you gotta take joy in what you can), and all but seven guys on their roster are American.

And only two on their women's roster.

Are you really that surprised? I don't recall Harvard ever being quite as dependent on Canadian players as Cornell has been historically. It's been closer to 50/50 US/Canada (plus the odd Eastern European here and there) in recent years but it wasn't that long ago that we had some recruiting classes almost entirely from Canada.

losing 7 players off your roster right before next season is an absolute disaster so I disagree with the original post anyway

Even if Harvard quickly gets a temporary restraining order against this ban, it will have a chilling effect on international students (and athletes) applying to Harvard.

Fortunately, Cornell does not appear to be close to receiving a similar penalty by the Trump administration, as the ban on international students (which Harvard will immediately litigate) follows several rounds of back and forth between Harvard and the Trump administration. Columbia previously received a letter of demands and acquiesced. Harvard received a different letter of different demands and chose to fight. Cornell hasn’t received any such letter. It appears President Kotlikoff understands how much hinges on staying out of the crosshairs of the Trump administration. As he recently told the Sun: “I will say we have not received a letter like Harvard… I will say that one of my goals is to not receive such a letter.” He has been back and forth to DC to put in a good word about Cornell.

Yeah, I have no interest in taking Harvard transfers under these circumstances. The fascists need to be reigned in, but unfortunately they seem content to ignore court orders with the blessing of the GOP in Congress. Very concerning.

well, i have no interest in *poaching* transfers to harvard's detriment under these circumstances, but to the extent they need landing spots i don't mind if cornell assists the players. rationalize your self-interest!

the judge who got harvard's suit seems likely to me to issue the injunction based on her history - obama appointee, enjoined the travel ban during Trump I. not particularly friendly to my field (plaintiffs' class action) but not likely to see this as anything other than arbitrary and capricious retaliation over protected first amendment activity.

I don’t know anything about the judge, or the underlying law really, but this seems like the most open-and-shut injunction in history. So I’m sure this judge would grant it, but so would any reasonable judge.

On the transfer point—if international students/athletes are transferring out of Harvard as a result of the government’s actions, this is an abhorrent situation regardless of where they end up. We should all hope it never comes to this.

I’m confident that almost any judge (except the Trumpiest ones) would issue an injunction and rule in Harvard’s favor. But I also believe the administration will do everything it can to undermine any such ruling.

Yeah, I have no interest in taking Harvard transfers under these circumstances. The fascists need to be reigned in, but unfortunately they seem content to ignore court orders with the blessing of the GOP in Congress. Very concerning.
well, i have no interest in *poaching* transfers to harvard's detriment under these circumstances, but to the extent they need landing spots i don't mind if cornell assists the players. rationalize your self-interest!

the judge who got harvard's suit seems likely to me to issue the injunction based on her history - obama appointee, enjoined the travel ban during Trump I. not particularly friendly to my field (plaintiffs' class action) but not likely to see this as anything other than arbitrary and capricious retaliation over protected first amendment activity.
that was fast (as it had to be)
Could you or another lawyer give a view of how quickly this will be litigated and the merits of each side’s case?

I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect it will have to be litigated in Judge Burroughs' court, then appealed, and then possibly taken before the Supremes. I'll be interested to see if (a) the Supremes agree to hear the case and (2) if they drag out the process as they did with Trump's claim of immunity.

I don't think so. I mean, if he wins he wins. But I think he's just jerking their chain. Maybe because his dad wasn't a big enough shot to get him in there. The Harvard worm produces different symptoms in different people.
