Good God do they suck. This time losing in the Badger Showdown to Lake State and Alabama-Huntsville by a combined 10-3 score. You know, if you invite Harvard to a tournament, any tournament, you know exactly where you can write them in. And do it in ink. Right next to the line that says P-A-T-S-Y.
At this point, I wouldn't blame BC, BU, and NU if they drop-kicked the Cantabs into the Charles and asked the Tufts JV squad to take their place in the Beanpot.
Holy Fuck.

Today marks the two month anniversary of Harvard's most recent win. With just one home game in the next month, and no wins away from Bright to day, the streak could run on for a while.
Is this the year they finally win the beanpot?

From Dan Shaughnessy's article about the Harvard-BU game in today's Boston Globe:
Poor Harvard (how many times does one get to type those words?). Folks in The Yard just don't appreciate our local hockey festival. Like the opening of deer season in Minnesota and the Directors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, the Beanpot is one of those events appreciated only by local practitioners of the craft. Boston University, Boston College, and Northeastern identify with college hockey in a way Harvard never will understand. And that is why there were so few Crimson jerseys in the Garden last night and so few folks listening to Alex Biega and friends on "Top Shelf" between periods.
"We're used to it," said Biega. "We don't get much attendance at our games."

It's late afternoon on the second Monday in February and that can only mean one thing-- time for Harvard to play in the Beanpot consolation game. They play underachieving BC at 5 (don't think it's televised but should be on web radio somewhere). The ECAC could really use a Harvard win here.
BU/NU in what should be a good one is on NESN at 8.

Yeah, but look what they are doing for the rest of us! As reported over the past month and again in The New York Times Sunday Styles section, Harvard has a 10 year licensing agreement for a line of preppy clothing modeled after the 60s. It willed be named "Harvard Yard" and is described by the creative director as "We want to combine the power of Harvard with the power of a plaid shirt."
Now, I for one am not entirely happy with the whole "Harvard Sucks" idea, but this is enough to be converted.
Edit: Not often reading "John Spencer Is Dead", I didn't realize that this was already posted. Sorry kingpin248.
However, there is another NY Times column today that summarizes much of what I liked about CU. Maybe I should move this to JSID?

Biking around the Duke campus this weekend, I was struck by how Cornell must have looked to someone who attended before all the elm trees died. It's a terrible shame Cornell didn't move to replace the forest sooner, because now I fear we are stuck with Cornell feeling like a city, with trees in planters, rather than buildings nestled in the spaces between trees.Jim Hyla

It's a terrible shame Cornell didn't move to replace the forest sooner, because now I fear we are stuck with Cornell feeling like a city, with trees in planters, rather than buildings nestled in the spaces between trees.
Not to further the thread-drift, but when I was back on campus in July I was struck by how much taller the trees on Ho Plaza had gotten since I graduated four years ago. So maybe we can get back to that time one day.
P.S. Harvard sucks.

It still didn't look like Yale-in-Horse-Country, which is what Duke looks like.Kyle Rose
Biking around the Duke campus this weekend, I was struck by how Cornell must have looked to someone who attended before all the elm trees died.
I did not find any with a five minute search, but there are amazing photos of Cornell in the 20's and 30's in full elm glory.

Anyone know if the chance of getting caught throwing fish is higher or lower in section O or N than in the student sections?

With no Cornell games to follow and Harvard playing at Minnesota and the games on DirecTV, I am declaring a personal moratorium on the usually immutable natural law that Harvard indeed sucks and will be pulling for them hard against Minn. My moratorium will cease Sunday morning.

Rooting for Hahavahd is fine in this situation because then you get to complain about how much they suck after they lose again.

Harvard optimistic after Minnesota trip
I guess I'd be hoping that too. Seriously, they do have some young players, who might get better during the season; but they were out shot 45-22 and 43-22 in their two games.Donato

Harvard sucks so much they even spread it to TV:
Too small to pursue his fantasy of playing football for the Miami Dolphins, Zucker took to writing local sports stories for The Miami Herald. He continued his writing career as an undergraduate at Harvard University, where he covered sports for The Harvard Crimson. He later became president of the publication. It was at Harvard that Zucker first met Conan O'Brien, now an NBC late-night host, who worked for humor magazine the Harvard Lampoon. As a prank, O'Brien's staff stole all the Crimson issues one day before they could be delivered. Zucker called the cops. "My first meeting with Jeff Zucker was in handcuffs, with a Cambridge police officer reading me my rights," says O'Brien.

For all their suckiness, guess who holds the mythical championship belt right now? Yep...SUCKS
Here's the trail, as I followed it:
BU starts, having won the chamiponship last season.
10/16 BU loses to UMass 3-2
10/31 UMass loses to Providence 2-1
11/8 Providence loses to Vermont 3-0
11/14 Vermont loses to BC 7-1
11/15 BC loses right back to Vermont 3-2
11/24 Vermont loses to UMass 6-2
11/28 UMass loses to Quinnipiac 5-4
12/4 Quinnipiac loses to Yale 7-4
1/12 Yale loses to Harvard 3-2, and Harvard holds it against Dartmouth on 1/18 by a score of 4-1
I didn't check everyone's upcoming schedule for non-conference play, but assuming Harvard gives it up to Union, RPI, or Princeton before their annual Beanpot debacle, FWIW the ECAC could hold it into this year's playoffs.
And yes, I do have too much time on my hands. Gotta find a job one of these days.

FWIW, The Belt is currently disputed. Wisconsin beat Yale in a shootout on January 3 and also claimed The Belt. That Belt is currently held by Colorado College. The official rules, however, state that The Belt does not transfer by shootouts.

So what's with the ECAC website having links to 3 articles on Harvard. Now I know that Harvard generally plays better in the second half, but 3 articles? One from that well known Patriot Ledger. Basically they all say the same thing. Harvard is up and down, they are doing better, and this is a down year for Beanpot teams. Maybe they can do it this year?
