ESPN commentators not only gave the Big Red some respect, they just picked Cornell over BU for Saturday.

Of course, they've been on the air for over 12 hours, so they're getting rather punchy.

Our good luck charm! LGR!

BU, from what I've gleaned watching them and my BU friend's chatting about them, is an incredible team... when they want to be. Sounds like defense is optional, as they rely heavily on Yegorov (and Caron, previously) to make big stops instead. Significant offense comes from the blue line (Hutson, Willander, Boumedienne). Red hot powerplay. Not great penalty kill. Tendency to commit crimes.

In BU friend's words, "[o]ur worst performances of this semester are worse than our worst performances of last semester because last semester we at least tried in every loss i felt like, this semester the team has overall cleaned up play but when the team lays an egg they're just making mike's life hell".

So strike early, stay out of the box, and rattle them. Their scoring is relatively spread out, with threats on most lines, though the Hutsons do lead scoring.

I love Yegorov... but not on Saturday.

BU is wildly inconsistent, from game to game and even within games. In their game today they had just 2 shots on goal in the first period yet rattled off 8 goals in the next two periods. Hopefully we get them on a bad day but I do think we can give them a fight even if they’re firing on all cylinders.

Anytime you score 8 goals on under 25 shots you need a bunch of stuff to go your way.

You need multiple complete breakdowns by the other team.

As I said in the MSU game thread, to beat BU Cornell is going to have to be much better than they were last night. To my eye, MSU had about 4x as many high danger chances as Cornell. That’s almost always going to lead to a Cornell loss and certainly against BU.

We need to play better than they did in the first two periods, sure, but if third period Cornell comes out for the first faceoff tomorrow, THAT team beats BU.

I still think the third Spartan goal was as much Fegaras's mistake as Shane's. idk why Fegaras skated past the puck.

13 of BU’s top 14 scorers are draft picks. That includes Sascha Boumedienne, who hasn’t been eligible yet but is projected as an early round draft pick in the upcoming draft.

Hutson—2nd round
Green—2nd
Eiserman—1st
Lachance—6th
Harvey—7th
Hughes—2nd
Willander—1st
Coppini—7th
Bednarik—2nd
Kaplan—3rd
Boumedienne—early round expected
Svoboda—3rd
Celebrini—6th

The only exception is BU’s top scorer, Quinn Hutson, brother of Cole and Lane, both 2nd round picks, with Lane currently tearing up the NHL.

Massive talent disparity incoming.

So the scouting report sounds similar to MSU. Very potent offense, good defense not as stellar of a goalie compared to Augustine. Very hard to beat when they are playing well. And because they've played against Schafer teams, and playing in a highly competitive Hockey East league... they may not be fazed as much by Cornell's grittiness.

Does that sound right? Any thoughts on their physicality? Face offs? Penalty minutes?

They seem much more skilled on paper than MSU, and less physical. MSU played in the heavy style of Cornell, BU is more run and gun with high octane offense.

Most penalty minutes in the country. Their face off percentage is worse than MSUs and they have a young team so I like our odds there

Lol come on. You should not like our odds there. Over half their team will play in the NHL. It’s been a magical few weeks but let’s not get carried away. BU are going to be huge favorites.

I think most agree with that. I give us about a 3-in-10 chance of winning. But that’s better than a lottery ticket.

Bad teams have beaten the current Team Draft Pick: Yale (7-5), Merrimack (2-1), Northeastern (5-1).

Fact is that more than any other team in the field, we have the ability to frustrate and shut-down the fancy teams. The last two times we met BU in the NCAAs, it’s been the same story as this time: BU, loaded with blue chippahs against a Schafer team. They took both, 3-1 with an ENG, and 2-1 with a CU EAG. Maybe that 30% chance comes up. I’m glad we have a chance to find out.

Yegorov is a 2nd rd pick of NJ and only 19. He was on an awful USHL team in the fall and joined BU this semester. He took over the starting role and has been great. He's not as highly rated as a prospect as Augustine yet, but I expect him to be in the discussion of best ncaa goalies the next 2 years.

BU has a potent offense, good goaltending, and optional defense. They're the little girl with the curl. Play tough, don't give them soft goals like tOSU/Shane's giveaway, and capitalize on their mistakes.

Yegorov has been better than Augustine since World Jrs.

BU more talented than Michigan State - Cole Hutson is insane offensively. But not as tough, and prone to lapses and lack of discipline. If the good BU shows up, no one beats them. But we'll see.

First, i think 3 in 10 is ungenerous. BU played 21 games against teams ranked below Cornell in the pairwise and went 14-7. Second, you're this mopey about a 1/3 chance? Have some chamomile and stop trying to make everyone else as forlorn as you!

The following is absolutely not a prediction.

BU sounds like exactly the sort of high-flying offense that our style of tough and disciplined defense while still possessing firepower plays well against.

I feel better shutting down a scoring team than I do scoring against a strong defensive team.

Again. Not a prediction. BU is really good and this will be a tough one.

Not underestimating. BU has ended our tournament dreams twice in last decade. Why would we be a favorite against a stacked team of blue chip prospects? I believe still

Lol come on. You should not like our odds there. Over half their team will play in the NHL. It’s been a magical few weeks but let’s not get carried away. BU are going to be huge favorites.

Never tell me the odds!

This is kind of a perception issue, whether you think 65% odds make you huge favorites or slight favorites.

65% is about as lopsided as it gets for an NCAA quarterfinals hockey game.

Who cares about the odds?

What were the odds for the MSU game?

Just get out there and play. Defense needs to be on point. Offense should be able to generate shots on Yegorov, and he's been a bit shaky recently, though how much of that is on him and how much on the defense is in the air.

Score. Don't get scored on. Play. Win. That's all there is to it.

I'm kind of leaning more towards John Winger's inspirational speech from Stripes:
Stripes Pep Talk
A prophetic tidbit from that (substitute "Cornellians" for "Americans";):
"We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! "

I think Cornell had about a 30% chance of beating MSU and now has about a 30% chance of beating BU. So no, not the tougher game. Also, the teams are very different from each other. Doesn’t KRACH just look at wins and losses like PWR?

Can we stream ESPNU via an ESPN subscription without having a cable plan, or do I need to buy Sling or something for a month?

The Roku ESPN app gives me a choice of the ESPN+ broadcast (which I get) and the ESPNU one (which I presumably don't).

ESPN's other interfaces are pretty awful BTW; the Android one makes me log in every so often and refuses to let me store my password, while the web interface insists on thinking I'm using some go.com account from years ago that doesn't have ESPN+ access, so I have to log out and then back in again with my Disney+ account.
