I guess we can forget about an at-large bid.

In the 2005 Regional Final, playing Minnesota in Minnesota, Cornell was being severely outplayed. Shots at the end of two were 26-7, yet the score was 1-1. As the 3rd continued on, suddenly Cornell was the one who had the energy, and started carrying play. I like to call that Mike's "rope-a-dope" game, where there was a switch that was flipped. I have no idea if our coaches told the team to conserve energy or what, but even though it ended in a heartbreaking OT, we had an incredible game plan.

I've never seen a team flip the proverbial switch like this one. The D was on, the depth was back, and Shane found his mojo. Was this Schafer's final trick? A full-season "rope-a-dope?" Lull our biggest rivals into a false sense of confidence, then steamroll the playoffs?

Haha, of course not.

But we're in.

Time to dream.

They’re a handful. Trey Augustine along with BC’s Jacob Fowler are considered the 2 best goalies in college hockey. And Isaac Howard is their offensive star, a 1st round draft choice of Tampa Bay who is one of top scorers in college hockey. As you say, we’ll need our best game, and Shane will need to be as good as he’s been the past 3 weekends.

From the stats, they look like a two-line team, which is problematic. One of the few teams that may be better than us 5-on-5?

Also, do we have a shutdown line that can handle someone like Howard? We haven't seemed to lately, but then the lineup card has been a mess all year.

I would trust Penney/psenicka to shut their top line down but we haven’t seen them on a line together all year if I remember right. We did a good job of shutting down clarksons top line who was also super strong. Might go back and see who we matched up against them most of the time. Probably just our top line of Walsh Bancroft and Mack.

I watched MSU's game last night. They're big and they're fast, and Augustine is a wall. If we play Schafer Hockey we can keep the goal count down, we'll have a chance. But we can't get into a shooting contest.

Yep. That's basically my understanding of MSU too - not only are the skaters very good (Howard's a Hobey Baker finalist), Augustine is a top three goalie in college hockey and a bona fide brick wall. Two recent articles. And Cornell's notably struggled to get into the high-danger areas before this playoff run. Realistically, our chances are low. But they're never zero.

MSU has higher PPG and lower GA than us despite playing a WCHA schedule. But it's 60 minutes and the gap is much smaller than HC-Minnesota.

In many ways, this is reminiscent of 2017--a team with enough talent and leadership to will itself into the NCAA's but not quite good enough to keep up with a superior opponent on paper. Stranger things have happened, though, and we won't find out until Thursday

FWIW, MSU's non-conference opponents other than BC had a winning percentage of about 0.300. Our non-conference opponents had a winning percentage of just under 0.600.

And they had a lot of games in the B1G where they gave up 3 or more goals and lost. As I said, we don't want to get into a run and gun with them, but they are beatable.

I don’t really get what this means. Enough talent and leadership to get into the NCAAs but not enough to go farther? Does that mean our talent and leadership is good but not great?

Almost the exact same team nearly got to the frozen four last year. We lost our best player from that team but added Major who has come into his own lately and everybody else is a year older and more experienced. Then we were mediocre almost the whole season until we found our game the past few weekends.

I don’t know why the team was so crummy for so long this season but that crumminess seems like the aberration more than the recent success does. And while we’re less talented than MSU, we are not less talented than we were a year ago or the year before that (each time a goal short of the Frozen Four). And there shouldn’t be much of a question as to the leadership. The reality is that MSU has a better team, but our odds are about as high as they’d be any other year we have to face a one seed.

Cornell has made the NCAAs 7 of the last 8 years. (And, as I said yesterday, the only year they missed was the one after half the team left early/transferred out.)

No team in college hockey has done better and gone 8 for 8.

Schafer is 10-4 in first round games, I don’t know the numbers but it feels like we’re usually the underdog too. Agreed that MSU is good but we have a decent chance with the way we’ve been playing

MSU is 11th in PP%. Q is first. MSU is 18th in PK%. Q is third. MSU is fourth in GA/G. Q is fifth. MSU is seventh in G/G. Q is sixth.

If (a big if) those numbers translated well from conference to conference, we should be competitive with the Spartans. I'm more concerned about playing against a style of hockey we're not used to. I still have bad flashbacks from '91 when we got WCHA linesmen that kept calling intentional offsides on us. We just weren't used to that style.

Quinnipiac is a known quantity. We haven't played a Big Ten team since the Spartan games in Nov 2019.

Of course the reverse can be said of MSU. And we did sweep them in 2019...

I'm surprised that "they" would put MSU on the Plus. All the games should be on the Deuce, U, or News. Only 2 first round games get relegated to Plus. Strange.

Are all the games on an ESPN platform?

Because there at so few - maybe one, maybe none - live shows on ESPN-U today, I can't figure out whether I have to upgrade my cable package to get ESPN-U or if the games will be available with the ESPN+ subscription.

Based on prior years I'm sure I have to upgrade to get the "U" shows live. Is that correct?

The good news is that Spectrum was forced into allowing subscribers to upgrade for a few days rather than month by month.

I’d be surprised if the way we play doesn’t disrupt MSU more than the way they play disrupts us. As a big ten team with a weak non con schedule they probably haven’t really played tough, on the boards hockey all year. Hopefully they’re not ready for it

Heads up from experience. Sports bars need a special license to show games on ESPN+. Check before you go.

A real turnabout from 20-25 years ago, where you had to go to a sports bar to see the games at all. Now you can watch them at home, and the sports bars are the question mark. (Of course, the question mark used to be, can you convince them to put something other than basketball on one tiny TV in the corner.)

As someone who frequented the Sports Bar In Ithaca during fall senester to drag myself out of the house for football that I honestly don't care about that much (the place is Uncle Joe's, good food and nice people), pretty sure hockey is the fourth most popular "big four" sport. We had one night with I wanna say 2 MNF games and a Bolts-Leafs game and you can guess which one got shut off despite there being a dozen TVs... :') still need to plan how to watch the MSU game, as I have class until 5. Is there going to be a watch party at CTB and should I bring my jersey to school in that case? (Folded, obviously...)

I tried that on my phone this morning but the program was also on ESPN2. I think i might have to wait for bowling later today to figure it out but that's assuming the bowling is live and not a replay (as the lacrosse was).

So yes, I'll figure it out before Thursday.

I typically go to to an “Ice Hockey” page on the ESPN+ app (sometimes having to select the “NCAA Men’s” sub-tile after that). On Saturday, I scrolled to the right, and there were placeholders for all the NCAA games. I’m feeling confident that they’re all carried on ESPN+.

regional sold out. With MSU and OSU there gonna be a limited supply.

They aren’t sold out. There are single game tickets available

it is sold out other than the team allotments,

There are resale tickets though.

regional sold out. With MSU and OSU there gonna be a limited supply.

They aren’t sold out. There are single game tickets available

it is sold out other than the team allotments,

There are resale tickets though.

If the team was to play Sat there will be tons of tickets I suspect.

It’s less than a two hour drive from East Lansing, and Munn was jumping Saturday. 2.5 hours from Columbus. I bet there’s a huge demand.

Ka-Ching! If you follow the Cornell ticket link to NC$$.com to TicketMaster, seats for the semifinals (only) are $100-$475.

I was ready to go to Allentown except with Penn State a 4-seed and also the Allentown host, Team Pedo had to be in the home district, but this year, this week, I can't do travel for a Thursday game. Well, we now have an 85-inch TV. (HiSense U8, $1700 at Xmas 2024, not bad until you get more than 45 degrees off center.) This is a far cry from low-res streaming on a laptop circa 2008.

In many ways, this is reminiscent of 2017--a team with enough talent and leadership to will itself into the NCAA's but not quite good enough to keep up with a superior opponent on paper. Stranger things have happened, though, and we won't find out until Thursday

WOW!!
Appreciate the positive spin!
I had to double check who posted this, to be honest

I’m usually just being realistic, not trying to put a negative spin on things. The reason I was so down on the team this year was precisely because they were capable of playing much better. And now they are, so I believe that their current play is more indicative of their true ability than their play for most of this season.

Schafer talked about the team’s struggles in the postgame press conference and how they turned it around the last 3-5 weeks. Based on what he said I think this is right - the way the team played the last two weeks is more representative of what they can do than the season as a whole.

I found it interesting that they decided to go all in on a heavy practice schedule instead of the usual taper to sustain peak. It makes sense - they never found their peak - but it was still risky coming off so many injuries. It paid off big, so credit to the players and coaches for battling through and making it happen. Everything clicked just in time.

I was rooting for an upset in the NCHC, since that would have eliminated Penn State. That might have gotten us placed here in Allentown. But now...meh.

I might still go to the games here Friday night, just to root against Peckernold and Q.

All those teams were capable of winning when they won. The point is that they’ve been all been far worse programs than we have since the time they won.

As a season ticket holder and RPI observer - more than a true fan - I think where RPI is now is horribly depressing. This is a program that didn't hire alum Ben Barr who is coaching ascending Maine.

Just as Adam Wodon worries about Clarkson's future, I worry about RPI.

Good morning and what a morning to be alive!!

Today is the ultimate "playing with house money!!" game. Just like Denver and Maine, we aren't expected to advance and Sparty is looking past us and watching film on BU, as they know OSU too well. We are in an amazing spot, even more so by our average regular season...Lansing sees 18-10-6 in a weak conference and they think we will roll over!! LFG!! I watched the NDU sweep highlights this morning, Denver and Maine from the last two years and I can't help but get fired up. If we play our game, super disciplined and are opportunistic with our chance we can and will shock the College Hockey world. The boys have extended Schafer's career another weekend, so there is zero pressure and low expectations. Win and Saturday is a different story as we look at the REGIONAL FINAL jinx....but that shit can wait.

Need to show up and do exactly what we've done from Colgate and through LP, clog the middle, force the dump in and win the battle of the boards. I say 3-1 W with an ENG and lots of nerves for us fans.

On a lark I looked at the roster entry for #22, Howard. He looks 12, but they all do. I got bored reading all his fantastical stats and numerous awards, but eventually arrived at the bottom where there are bio notes and discovered this: away from the rink he "enjoys cornhole."

MSU are a young team playing with the pressure of being a high seed in 'home' territory. Cornell, the road dogs, have all the moxie and veteran tricks. It's a pretty good value for the bettors, at +245 on the moneyline.

There's lots of MSU fan chatter in various online forums totally looking past us and already discussing strategy and odds for MSU vs. BU/OSU. I certainly don't think it's anywhere near a "gimme" for them, and if any of our players have seen or heard it, I'm hoping it's extra motivation for them!

Most (if not all) Big 10 schools have their own ELF equivalents: fan-run forum/discussion board sites. I found a couple of different Michigan State ones just by googling.

SOG 15-2 in favor of OSU with the first period almost over twitch

If it continues like that, Pandolfo is going to sound pretty prescient given his postgame comments following the UConn loss last week:

If it happens again, the season’s over,” Pandolfo said after Thursday’s loss. “If our guys want to play the way we did tonight at regionals, I don’t think we’re going to like the result.”

The fog horn of the arena they blast for goals is so loud, the mic’d up network broadcasters can’t be heard.

If I've counted right, Schafer's final record in NCAA first round games is 11-4 (9-3 since the tournament went to 16 teams). That is just insane, especially since were the lower seed in many of those games.

I have a new “rope-a-dope” game. That MSU game feels so similar to the 2005 QF, this time we finished the job.

MSU may have had the conditioning (4 days a week in the gym, omg!) to endure the figure skating contests they play in the B1G6, but they never had to WORK like that. And we didn’t even play particularly grind-em-out hockey we’re known for.

I reserve judgment for a rope-a-dope season.

“You don't want it to be so loud that it will scare little kids,”

Or you know…cause hearing damage.
