Looked like the linesman never had his hand up. Maybe he thought it bounced off someone at mid ice.

I thought the Cornell player was well ahead in the skating race to negate the icing regardless of any deflection

It wasn’t icing bc the ref at center for waived it off, which is why the cornell player totally let up despite having the lead in the race to the puck

The icing thing was a total nothingburg. Bancroft had a huge lead on the puck, linesman waived off the icing, and Bancroft totally let up. That’s the only reason Taylor of (Clarkson) got there first.

I'm a little upset they got rid of the consolation game, because they could make a trophy for winning it and call it the Pecknold.

Given Q’s SF record are you sure that trophy should be for the consolation winner?

I was thinking the Pecknold cup should go to whichever team knocks off the #1 seed.

Because Bancroft was clearly ahead of the Clarkson Dman at center ice, I think it was a proper call.

It’s not about who’s ahead at center ice, it’s about who’s ahead at the dot. But it definitely looked like Bancroft majorly let up once the linesman waived it off.

Oh, I agree with you - hence, an “icing” that wasn’t. Also can’t forget that Clarkson handily won the race to that puck, but couldn’t keep possession. They had every opportunity to get that back out of the zone, but didn’t.

Yes, I should have added that fact. Bancroft was ahead of Taylor when the linesman waived it off and Bancroft then clearly let up. The fact that Taylor then “beat” Bancroft to the goaline was then irrelevant, since the linesman had already made his call. It could be argued the linesman made his call prematurely, but once made the race to the goal line was rendered moot.

And the more I think about it, I'm a little bit in awe of what a smart play that was - put in the effort to beat the icing, but then don't overplay it. Cede the possession of the puck in lieu of maintaining defensive shape. That was a seriously veteran move by a well-coached player.

But the linesman can’t waive it off because Bancroft was ahead at center ice, he can only waive it off because it was went off a Clarkson stick or was playable by Clarkson, right? The way I saw it was that the waive-off was incorrect, but immaterial because Bancroft would have won the race anyway.

I haven’t checked the rule, but I believe the linesman has broad discretion as to when he can waive off the icing if he believes the offensive player is sufficiently ahead of the defender

NCAA rulebook on icing
For the purpose of interpretation of this rule, icing is completed the instant the puck crosses the goal line, unless an attacking player, who is onside at the blue line and with no opponent between that player and the goal line and is clearly in position to be the first player to touch the puck. Icing shall not be called in this situation. This decision by the official shall be made no later than the first player reaching the end zone faceoff dots. If the puck enters the goal in this situation, icing shall not be called and a goal shall be awarded.
So, the ref called it at the right time for college. Maybe in the NHL it's a touch-up rule but they're a little more careful in the NCAA.

Clarkson gave us so much room in the first, and we cashed in. I still feel Mack wants that breakaway back that could have pushed it to 3-0 - his roofed shot had Langenegger beat.

Had Clarkson played like they did in the 2nd, things are different.

Agreed. Cornell absolutely dominated the first 10 minutes or so, and Clarkson dominated for about 10 minutes of the second, but the rest felt like they were trading a few strong shifts at a time, and both goaltenders played well.

That gorgeous 2 on 1 in the first and Clarkson just barely missing on that late 2nd period PP when Cornell was scrambling was the difference.

I thought that Cornell coming up with the puck off the board scrums was outstanding. Clarkson created chaos and controlled play right before they scored and things could have turned then but Cornell didn't roll over.

Watching it in real time was so impressive that I couldn't say it out loud to the two fans I was with. I finally let it out after time expired in the third.

How the hell they almost never let Clarkson grab the puck of those board scrums isn't something I can understand. The team this weekend found high gear and very rarely let its foot off the gas.

Hats off to the team and the coaching staff.

Castagna was a beast this weekend.

Yes. That’s the Castagna I want to see. Just great. Wonder if he was playing hurt.

Shoutout to Jane McNally for her superb coverage of our games, doing double duty for both the Sun and College Hockey News. And Josh Seguin had an excellent piece in CHN on Kovich’s improbable SHG against QU. Thanks to Adam for providing about the only quality source of college hockey news anywhere.

And for those who aren’t aware, Adam is BU PxP man Bernie Corbett’s guest every Sunday at 9 a.m. ET on the NHL network’s college hockey radio show on Sirius/XM where they discuss the latest developments in college hockey. And yesterday morning after Adam’s segment Corbett interviewed Schafer about his pending retirement and Schafer’s coaching career. The interview was recorded before the QU game, so that tale had yet to be told.

why cant the icing be waived off early? If the dude thinks cornell was clearly going to win the race to dot he doesnt have to wait for the dot to make the decision,
Maybe I have the rule wrong then? I thought icing cannot be waived off for that reason.

After Max Andreev was injured crashing into the end wall while racing for an icing call, Schafer criticized the ref for being too late with the whistle.

McNally is amazing, how is she able to produce two separate non-redundant articles within a couple of hours after the game ends?

Is the Adam/Schafer interview available online anywhere?

They must have, but I can’t think of one. They played incredibly disciplined hockey.

I think they won 90+ % of the "Who gets the puck after the wall scrum?" battles. I noticed this on Saturday and yet when looking at the replay of Friday's game there was the same strategy. Pin the puck to the boards, fight like hell and grab the puck as it comes out of the mess.

Thanks for posting this list. It got me to watch again one of the most non-representative two minutes of a game which I have ever seen [www.youtube.com] This is from the 1974 UNH (#1) vs RPI (#8) ECAC playoff game. It was won by RPI 7-6 in OT on a goal by freshman Rick Smith, his second of the game and second of the season.

I wrote years ago to the poster, and he claimed not to have a video of the rest of the game. Granted, RPI would never have taken an early lead if UNH goalie Cap Raeder was not playing injured or sick. (I have forgotten which.) And these 2 minutes would not have happened as it did if RPI could have skated 3 on 3.

Schafer talked about making sure our guys knew that we needed to make a play, (and not just clear the puck out of our end.) He made a point of changing the standard penalty-kill mindset. Guessing Pecknold failed to do the equivalent mind-set change behind his bench.

I just read through The Poly (RPI's weekly newspaper) [digitalassets.archives.rpi.edu] Raeder was "injury plagued". Also thanks to Cornell for beating Penn, allowing RPI to sneak into the playoffs.
