In '86, I had just moved from CT to Seattle, but came back for a friend's wedding in Burlington the weekend of the ECAC Finals. Fortunately the Saturday wedding was an early afternoon event, so I hightailed it to Boston with a buddy from CT who had gone to Clarkson. Clarkson had a history back then of finding interesting ways to lose in the ECAC Tournament; the whole way down to Boston, my friend was griping about "getting the monkey off his back". Needless to say, all I could do was smile when we met up after the game; couldn't give him too much of a hard time, as I needed a place to stay that night!

This will be the 6th time these two have faced off for the league title:

Clarkson won in: 1966 and 2019
Cornell won in: 1970 (duh), 1986, 1997.

Reminder since it's not obvious and keeps catching me off guard: the game is at FIVE eastern tomorrow.

Yeah, we really had no business winning that game. That game at Lynah they dominated us. Absolutely dominated us.

But we won! Pretty much sheer will and guile.

And an embarrassing amount of icing as the clock wound down in the 3rd. An embarrassing amount. Whatever it takes.

We were manically applauding every icing, because what else could we do? One JF Houle scored in the 3rd to make it a miserably tense time for everyone. Christ, what a game. Schafer knows how to get the most out of overmatched teams.

Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, so...

Near the end of the Clarkson win over Dartmouth, Clarkson scored an empty netter. In the celebration one of the Clarkson players got hurt and had to be helped off the ice. He wasn't putting weight on one leg. He was wearing an "A", and checking their roster it looks like they only have one assistant captain, in which case it was Kaelan Taylor.

It was Trey Taylor - who was ECAC Best Defensive Defenseman Award winner this year. Martino Edwin Diaz'ed him.

Thanks.

My wife thought it was number 4. Turns out she was right.

Here's a screenshot of how I came up with the wrong Taylor.

In those days you could change after an icing, so less of a disadvantage than it is today.

They shut down in the 3rd. I figured J.F. was having them practice sitting on a lead. When it was "close," which it wasn't for long, Clarkson and Dartmouth were about tied in shot attempts and shots on goal.

Clarkson’s 5 starters are their top 5 scorers. They’ll probably be double shifting their top line and we need to shut them down. We have much more scoring depth so hopefully that comes through for us and allows us to play more defensive against their first line.

Chatted with a Section B'er while the CTB people were getting the game up, finally.

Highlights:

Him: "This team is finally playing like the number 6 ranked team preseason - OH WAIT..."

Him: "They're like me with assignments, do it at the last possible minute."

Me [after we were trying to figure out if Quinnipiac was in or out]: "I think quantum physics is slightly LESS confusing than the pairwise..."
Him: "I'm a comm major, I wouldn't know!"

Incredible start. Cornell was moving the puck, moving their feet, and supporting exceedingly well.

Clarkson looked sluggish the first 10 minutes but it seemed like they got it together, last half of the period looked much more even. I suspect the next two periods will be tight but I love the way Cornell is executing right now.

Clarkson got the kind of the goal they wanted. They've been trying to force something from the crease and it worked

Al DeFlorio
Hope we're not tiring.

Yesterday, Jack O'Brien got some third period shifts and it was good to have fresh legs. I wonder if we see the same today.

I don't know if I'm mad at Stanley for taking that penalty or the refs for calling it. But I know that I'm mad.

Up 1 going into the third is good. The way we played that period was not. Hopefully yesterday’s OT isn’t catching up to us. We can not play that period again and expect to win this game. Get the next goal or make sure there isn’t a next one.

I am imagining Jimmy Rayhill is airdropping this to the entire team during intermission.

Shane was huge the last 10+ minutes of that period. Cornell needs to regroup, Clarkson smells blood.

Yep. We have like 20 seconds of PK, then figure it the hell out.

20 minutes. We play 20 minutes, we win. That's it.

Didn't seem like much of a call.

whew on that post. shane coming up big on the shots that are actually on net and has had great instincts on the ones that are bound for the post.

Shane and a little bit of good luck has us holding onto the narrow margin. We weren't completely impotent going forward there either--CLK's goalie has also come up with some good/fortuitous stops... a great game for the neutral... Cornell's gotta try to control the tempo a bit more.

Small contingent of watchers here at CTB. A few Clarkson fans with Cornell partners. Had to explain to someone that you can't ice the puck while on the PK...

I know better than to expect anything on the snooze play. But it is two minutes we should be in their o-zone.

Sadly, that's how I've come to think of it, too.

Well, that was a good two minutes of nap time... now 12ish of pure stress.
