At least we scored on the power play, which is evidence against my current theory that our power play is some sort of inexplicable long-form trolling.

I’m at the hold steady show in Brooklyn. Saw the score was 3-3 as the opener went on. Thought this is going to be a good night ….

This Cornell team just doesn’t have it. They suck. It’s hard to explain.

It's obvious the coach has given up on them just like some others. Turn off the game BL. See you next year.
If tonight’s results hold, Princeton will have a higher PWR than Cornell. Wonder why we didn’t just hand the program over to Syer.

I honestly thought the same thing after he left for Princeton. Hope I’m wrong, but think we messed up on that. And before u come brandishing your pitch forks, I’m sure mikes retirement had been brought up between the two long before this season. Unless Mike saw something he didn’t like or didn’t think he had what it takes to do the job, I don’t get it.

Donaldson has long left me perplexed. Came in from the BCHL as a finalist for that league’s MVP award, and then had a solid freshman year until (as I recall) he got hurt. Last year he was scratched most of the time, and this year, when he’s been given the opportunity due to injuries, just hasn’t been effective.

Wild quotes from Schafer in this article: [cornellsun.com]

“Our kid says he didn’t butt-end him — he [said] he jammed his hand into his stomach”
Would this be legal even if it were true? Is jamming your hand into an opponent’s stomach such that he falls to the ice not a penalty?

“I don’t know whether to believe him or not, it’s kind of inconsequential but you’ve got to believe your players. They’re like your own kids, right?“
This is the least confident statement I’ve ever heard in my life.

Yeah, I was wondering that. Even still, though, saying “he says he merely punched him in the chest, which is only worthy of a minor penalty. I don’t know whether to believe him, but he’s like my child and a parent always believes his child” does not inspire confidence…

Wow today would have been completely shitty if I wasn’t with my friends for it. A bad loss, super long drives because of the snow and every single colgate student we interacted with was a complete douchebag. Not that I think that’s representative of all their students but it sure didn’t make the loss feel any better. Last year Schaf was pissed going into winter break off a Colgate game and we played better second half, have to hope that’s coming again this year.

I don't always try to cripple an opponent with a cheap shot. But when I do, I choose to be within 6 feet of an official with unencumbered line of sight.

I decided to make the trek to Hamilton for this game, through the hazardous road conditions. This was my 11 year old daughter's first away game, and my first proper away game in...I'm not sure, but I'm guessing well over 11 years. Despite the lousy weather, the crappy game result, and the plethora of asshole Colgate student fans in attendance, at least they didn't throw pizza at us. A minor silver lining, but a silver lining nonetheless.

We have seen head shots get reviewed. And from that angle what he did is unclear other than the guy went down. Could have pulled his pants for all that shows.

According to Schafer, Donaldson claims he hit the Colgate player with his fist, not the end of his stick. I don't know what the rule is, but the Colgate player was in the crease.

I also had a bad experience with the Colgate fans and I was surprised because I’ve been to a couple other games there and never had anything like that. It’s not the behavior that I would expect from a small liberal arts school anyway, it’s especially weird because the vast majority aren’t actually big fans because every other home game they have is completely devoid of students

Puzzling, as he had a much better view than this camera angle. But than again, it’s not the only penalty that the refs missed.

Don't think the official even saw it. Look at his body alignment; he was looking straight up to the blueline, not at the front of the net

It's actually very clear. Watch it at the .25x speed option.

He actually winds up first!

Look at both of his hands on the stick and how they move together. First they move slowly upwards, then his right foot lifts and pulls back (much like a baseball batter about to swing, except the foot goes a bit backwards from the rotational force he's trying to get.). You can also see his left skate staying strong in the ice as he's pushing off of it as a base, and then once the weight transfer starts the hands move sharply down and into the opponent.

Donaldson saying it was his fist or glove is being too cute by half.

For whoever mentioned the other guy being in the crease, he wasn't. At most one blade barely touches the crease outline before he gets whacked. And even if he was in the crease it's not like they defunded the refs and made the crease a lawless free-for-all.

Yeah I don’t know if there are any other US soccer fans in here but that Donaldson play reminded me of the Tim weah punch in the copa America this summer. I thought Tim weah should be left off the national team roster until after the 2026 World Cup. Since this game was much less high stakes than that one I think a few weeks of getting scratched would teach Donaldson his lesson and I do believe that Schafer has enough of a spine to actually do that. But after those couple weeks who knows if he can work his way back in if we have guys return from injury.

the refs swallow their whistles until they decide to give Rego a minor and Catalano a 10 min misconduct. Gate 5x4 pp with 3:20 remaining.

Why was Catalano in the box? Shouldn't he have been sent out with less than ten minutes in the game even with a full OT? There was definitely failure to communicate some of those penalties over the PA. After they didn't say much for the Donaldson penalty I saw the PA announcer get a phone call which I assume was from the broadcast booth looking for clarification.

The final minutes of the second and the early portion of the third they had definitely found their game. They were winning the battles that they had lost all night. They were finally taking it to them. It stinks that they looked quite good during the 5x3 and then collapsed during the 5x4. I thought that was a really tough spot to throw Koepple out there. Hasn't played in a while plus Colgate was still on the PP. That building has been a little bit of a house of horrors for Shane. Two seasons ago he also got pulled after he gave up three quick ones. They lost that one in a shootout. They were getting outhit by a pretty good clip all night. Pretty rough finish to the fall semester.

The biggest contributing factor to our disappointing first part of the season -- besides injuries -- has been our specialty teams. Our power play, which has been better as of late, still ranks 52nd in the country, while our penalty kill ranks 54th. We easily could have won a few more games with better results from those units.
We also haven't received consistently elite goaltending from Shane. His GAA is a respectable 2.26, but his save percentage is .896. His save percentages the previous three seasons were .923, .916 and .933.

Hard to have elite goaltending when the PK is bad and the team keeps turning over or giving away the puck in dangerous areas of the ice. The GAA and save percentage together suggest less of a goaltending issue and more of a defensive issue, which is consistent with what I've seen this season so far

Unless you have some inside information, this seems wildly unlikely. Ben and his wife both worked for Cornell, his daughters went to school here. His hockey team had amazing success with the players HE recruited. Why would he uproot all of that to instead coach a perennial doormat?
