Thoughts?

I’m not sure what to expect after last week. Will Q just shut the game down? Will we? Will the skill guys get excited (and sloppy) because of MSG? All will be revealed.

Whatever happens, I’m sure of one thing-am excellent meal in Koreatown.

I went into this season expecting us to be the favorite in pretty much every game. Instead, after how we’ve looked so far, I go into every game as thinking it’s a coin-flip that we need to luck out to keep Pairwise hopes alive. A 3-0 or 2-0-1 finish to the first half of the season would restore some confidence. But I’m pessimistic. The team has been so sloppy and hasn’t looked dominant at any point, even against weaker opposition. Tonight’s game is pick ‘em. A loss would be crushing.

I’m hoping that the Thanksgiving holiday gave them time to prepare their minds for this game.

I get it about the injuries, I really do.
I’ve just always been of the mindset that no matter who’s on the ice, they should be able to get the job done.

Cornell lost Wolfenberg (injury) and Bancroft (game misconduct) vs Harvard, stretching the total to 7 for one game. But most of the season we’ve had 3-5 guys out, which is a lot, but not a great excuse when our opponents have also been dealing with injuries, including NoDak not being able to field a full lineup and Dartmouth’s best player being out. Our entire first PP unit and our top returning scorers from last season have all been healthy the whole year. At this point, depending on whether Mack can play, we are short Devlin (who was on the fourth line last year), Wallace (in and out of the lineup), Wolfenberg (seventh D). Injuries will not be an excuse tonight unless there are more injuries of which we aren’t aware yet. Devlin (and possibly Mack) is the only one currently hurt who would be a shoe-in to play tonight.

This is one of those things that's especially pointless to bicker about given that the situation will continue to evolve, but I think you're underestimating our Pairwise odds, mathematically speaking.

We're in alright shape. We're 4-2-2 against a slightly tougher than average schedule (CHN has it ad 25th hardest). Given how much hockey is left compared to how much has been played, the record isn't anything to be concerned about.

Carry on worrying about the performance of the team itself. I also think we're more or less fine there, but I can see why you might be concerned.

To be less chauvinistic, just consider how the ratio has changed. Even Engineering now enrolls more women than men, and it's still one of the top ten engineering schools in the country.

Is this the same team that won a championship last year? Absolutely horrific performance on the ice by all positions tonight. A QU team who is less skilled, younger, and not expected to win anything this year is making us look foolish. Every game I watch this team I think “this will be the game we turn it around” and every game I’m proven wrong.

3 x3 works better for the nhl because the skill level is off the charts. Here not so much. 4x4 may work better.

Schafer was very careful in the interview to say it was another freak injury and he wasn't putting any time table to it.

It could be one of those nagging things that are always week to week, and he just doesn't want to put any pressure on Penney to feel like he has to heal "on time."

Assuming we will not see him against Colgate he (and the rest of the MASH unit) have the full month of December to repair themselves.

Tbh I don't mind 3x3 in the N. I like the concept of opening up the ice for talented offensive players to go ham. The problem is I can't remember one NCAA game where this worked, in my admittedly limited experience.

Yes. The entire crowd was standing and going nuts during the shootout, same as it’s been for every shootout I’ve seen in person. Fans love the shootout. Fans also hate ties. That’s why neither the shootout nor 3x3 OT is going anywhere. The NHL threw a bone to the casual fan, and it worked, and the NCAA followed. No use complaining about it.

Personally I like 3x3 in the NHL, less so in college, don’t mind the shootout because it doesn’t count towards the PWR anyway. But I don’t think the purists in this chat have any idea how much the casual fan despises ties. To most fans, it feels like a loss for both teams.

In person it was the opposite. Cornell fans booed Q when they stalled. There was a decent Q fan turnout in the northeast corner of the building.

They do less pomp in the off-years. The BU game gets more hype in terms of alumni and university introduction.

The Q crowd wasn't large but they were surprisingly loud when things went right. Pretty sedate during the typical run of play but they got up for the goals and the good saves.

As for the game itself, I thought we had more raw skill but a more stagnant offensive setup. Q had a lot more movement in the offensive zone - especially on the PP - and more willingness to make interesting passes to skaters looking for space rather than trying to win one-on-one with the puck or making safe perimeter passes. I would love to see our PP try to emulate theirs.

That’s how I saw it too. A week or two ago Schafer noted we weren’t “connected,” and while I think we’re improved in that area, Q does seem better connected, especially on the PP. We still stand around too much passing around the perimeter.

At a very nice pre-game reception, Nieuwendyk gave a nice speech and mentioned his daughter (who was at the reception wearing a Quinnipiac hat) was a recent QU grad.

There was a small pre-game reception to honor Coach Schafer to which donors to the Athletics Dept/Hockey team were invited. Director of Athletics Moore, Assistant/incoming Coach Jones, Nieuwendyk, and Schafer spoke. All very nice speeches, Schafer spoke about how much Cornell has meant to him, very touching and heartfelt.

I thought Cornell really outplayed Q 5x5. I couldn’t tell how many lines Q was rolling but it seemed like Cornell dominated possession unless Quinnipiac’s very top guys were on the ice. The second period was a string of Cornell penalties, many of which were stupid. That plus the bad PK cost Cornell the game. If the entire game had been played 5x5 Cornell would have won by multiple goals. It was another huge special teams let down. I really think that if special teams merely matched their opponent each game this season then Cornell would be undefeated. Instead, we lose the special teams battle every game, which turns wins into ties and ties into losses.

It’s that simple: figure out special teams and get healthy, and this team will be great. Otherwise, the mediocrity will continue.
