Not really ALUMNI but Kempf's rights were just traded to the Avs

Have we ever had four alums (or soon-to-be) (Malinski, MacDonald, Kempf, Steinburg) under contract to the same NHL team at the same time?

Does Colorado have a scout with Ithaca or Cornell ties?

Jill Saulnier is now half the answer to the trivia question: who was involved in the first PWHL fight?

Incidentally, I saw Brianne Jenner play in Ottawa last week. Fantastic atmosphere as Jenner scored in Ottawa's league goal scoring record 8-3 win over Minnesota. I hope the league can find sustained success.

Feels very on-brand that Saulnier was involved in the first fight (and also that she liked this video of it): [www.instagram.com]

And that she was giving tips in the box: [www.tiktok.com]

I was at the game! She also had a goal and an assist and was the #2 star of the game!

Barron back for the jets in an OT loss today. He laid 4 hits so I guess his injury is feeling better.

Malinski played in his 82nd NHL game last night. He is 5-12-17 and a +7. It'll be interesting to see if he can get into the 30 point range over his next 82.

Avs vs. Stars is on TNT this afternoon and they just spotlighted Malinski, who, after breaking his stick on a shot, grabbed a new one from the bench and then immediately set up a nice one-timer for Jonathan Drouin to put the Avs up 3-1.

And the producer is a Quinnipiac grad! Malinski has been in and out of the lineup after their busy trade season. Glad he’s making the most of his opportunities.

Since his return to the ECHL, Ben Berard has three consecutive two goal games for Kalamazoo. Yesterday to cap off the weekend he added two assists for a four point game. Sniper.

Ed Olczyk spent some time in the 3rd period last night discussing how impressed he was with Sam Malinski's game, offensively on the rush and making passes and on defense.

Even though it’s one of my pet peeves he made a play on a two on one where he laid out and before he slid out of position he got the puck with his stick to break it up. With Manson out he’s back in on a nightly basis.

Another nice game by Malinski tonight with another sweet primary assist on Brock Nelson's first goal for Colorado. Avs fans seem pretty high on Sam's recent play with lots of chatter about wanting the team to re-sign him on a longer term deal pretty soon.

I live in Denver but happened to be in the Chicago area this weekend. Avs games get blacked out at home -- it was great to see two alums playing in the same game!

And the temptation to head over to Toledo on Saturday is great -- the drive is less than 4 hours! The question: Do I take the 3 grandchildren I am babysitting, or do I leave them on their own? After all, the oldest is 10 and good at babysitting her brothers on occasion....

I got to know Bill during my junior year and Bill’s freshman year when we both covered Cornell basketball, me for the Sun and Bill for WVBR. First time I heard him on the radio I could tell he had “it” as a sports broadcaster. One day either that year or the next he asked me to lunch, and we met at a long-gone pizza place in Collegetown. He said he had decided to go into sports broadcasting after he graduated but his parents were less than thrilled with the idea. I recall telling him that while I understood his parents’ reservations about that career path, I thought he was the best college broadcaster I’d heard at Cornell or pretty much anywhere, and that in my opinion he should give it a shot. The rest is history.

Last year I was fortunate to take my son, along with another Cornell friend and his son, to the MSG studios after a Rangers game to see Bill in action doing the Rangers’ postgame show. It was great to see him do his thing in person. He was and is a terrific guy.

Players with pro aspirations plan their senior year schedule hoping to leave early. I bet Shane is enrolled in no more than 13 credits this semester and that he took a couple of 1 or 2 credit courses that met in the first 7 weeks of the term. Maybe some independent study and, for classes that run until the end of the term, no final exams if possible. As long as he has done most of the work in a course, he can ask for an INC and make arrangements to finish the work at a later date.

In this article it says that Bancroft helped “Cornell to its most successful three year run in program history”.

There weren’t any further details so can anyone think of an angle to which these past three years could be considered the best three year stretch in program history?

Of course! Consider how the White House proclaims "the best economy in history" by ignoring anything before or after the current regime. It's how things are done these days.

Nah. There's a difference between ignorance and narcissistic self aggrandizement.

For some reason I always thought Joe Nieuwendyk '88 had also finished his degree - he certainly spent enough time at Cornell, having bought a house on Cayuga Lake right after he left and turned pro - but I can't find any evidence of it.

So I just posted this comment on that article:

"This quote “helping Cornell to its most successful three-year run in program history.” shows a lack of investigating Cornell history.

Check out the 1967-70 4 years. Each year they were the ECAC Champions, also in the NCAA Championship 4 each year and won the Championship in ’67 & ’70. The ’70 team was the only NCAA undefeated season ever.

You could pick any 3 of the 4 seasons and they’d be better than the last 3. The 4 seasons were certainly the best ever.

Investigate further before writing."

Three consecutive quarterfinals in the current circumstances versus 67-69 or 68-70 which were less competitive but not non-competitive. Interesting.

But you don't state that we won the national championship x2 as well as 70 being undefeated.

Sure those guys wouldn't match up with today's, but I can attest that the Cornell fans were more excited then. Talk to anyone who was walking into the old Boston Garden.

Finally, and probably most importantly, these years are what started the whole idea of Lynah Faithful.

I completely agree. Was just musing. The last three years have been great but not comparable to those. But the flip side is that man there were some shockingly bad teams in the league then. Some of those scores were disgraceful.

AHL players salaries vary widely based on the type of contract (AHL-only or two-way NHL contracts). Here’s a recent breakdown -

AHL-only contract players typically earn between $50,000 and $90,000 per season. Players on NHL two-way contracts earn more, often between $70,000 and $150,000, depending on their NHL salary and terms.

Salaries range from around $52,500 (AHL minimum salary as of the 2024–25 season). Some players earn $300,000+ in the AHL if they’re on generous two-way contracts with high AHL guarantees, though this is rare. Entry-level players on two-way NHL deals might earn $70,000–$80,000. Median AHL salary is estimated at around $75,000–$85,000.

Recent graduates (Class of 2024) from the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (seemingly, the modal school for hockey players) have reported an average base salary of $96,394, with an average combined bonus of $11,896. The school reported that 95 percent of graduates accepted offers within four months of graduation.

So, try the AHL for a few years while you’re young and care-free. If you make it to the NHL, you’re set, if not, there’s investment banking.

Good article. It's a bummer to lose Bancroft but overall I think this is positive for the program. Cornell won't be a factory team like BC, BU, UMich etc. but I think it has been able to compete with those teams in part because players on the cusp have developed here and raised their level of play sufficient to make it at the pro level including the NHL. A story like Bancroft's where he was undrafted but by his junior year had apparently five NHL clubs interested in him can be a selling point to recruits, as can the B's being satisfied with Walsh's development here and content to have him remain for his junior year. (At least that's how I choose to look at it. :-) ) If the team was losing players through the portal to other colleges, that would leave me with a sense of dread; guys making the leap to the pros does not.

i guess scoring to bring your team within two in the final minute of the game isn't how most people want to score their first pro goal. bancroft's only reaction was to coast to a stop along the boards.

i love watching our guys get wow goals in the pros. much more satisfying than when they pop in a grinder rebound. makes me think about what they'd look like if the red had a more free-flowing offense. i know that it is the yin to the yang of having a great defense for the last 30 years but i have to admit if we're going to have an adjustment period that involves more losing (not saying we will, just IF) i wouldn't mind watching a little firewagon hockey for a bit.

I know we have speculated that D-first wasn't only Mike's personal preference but also the better way to survive as a team less likely to get the highest end blue chippahs.

But Yale did it, so it can be done.
