Good shot from Colgate on the rebound, Bergmann didn't have much of a chance. 2-1, us.
We might be challenging?
Challenging for a missed major.

Penalty to Jockims at the tail end of the period has us going into the 3rd with about 1:30 of PK and a 2-1 lead.

That more than takes the sting out of the lacrosse disaster. What an amazing job by the players and staff. They didn’t look tired at all after playing over five periods less than 24 hours prior. That has to have been a better home crowd than you’d find just about anywhere else.

Back in December 1962 Cornell hosted a holiday invitational tournament. Bowdoin, Williams, Norwich, Hamilton, Colgate, and Cornell. Three days, three games each day. Bowdoin went and Williams went 3-0, Norwich 2-1, Hamilton 1-2, Colgate and Cornell 0-3. Cornell's Laing Kennedy was named the tournament all-star first team goalie after making 125 saves over three days, including 56 against Williams.

4. Minnesota, hosts 5. Colgate

6. Minnesota-Duluth
7. Penn State
8. Clarkson
9. St. Lawrence
10. Boston U.
11. Sacred Heart

Frozen Four hosted by Minnesota (Ridder Arena)

Actually, that was in December 1960. In December 1962, however, we played in the ECAC Holiday Tournament at MSG and lost both games (Clarkson and St. Lawrence). Kennedy was named first team goalie and, I think, MVP. I was there, but it was a long time ago.

You're right, George. I interchanged the years. Kennedy was the 2nd team goalie at the 1962 MSG tournament. How the second game went. I was at home listening on the radio.

Wisconsin is incredible this season but it gives us hope. 1-5 seeds are pretty set in stone by the pairwise but the committee can do some finagling for 6-11, although it would be hard to argue against maintaining bracket integrity this year, with the pecking order fairly stratified. I wonder if Clarkson and St. Lawrence could get save money sharing a charter flight out if they do get slotted in against each other.

So wait, seeds 6 and 11 play at Lynah, and then Cornell plays the winner a couple days later (also at Lynah)? Or do the first three games for the teams without byes happen next weekend at the higher seeds’ rink (eg. 6 hosts 11), and Cornell is off next weekend?

Sucks that the finals are in Minnesota. Is the weather there this year more like 2018 when I froze my butt or like the temperate times last year when I skipped the Frozen Four?

Thank you. Seems like getting a top 3 seed was nice.

Top 5: get a bye (huge upside)
Top 4: get to host quarterfinals (big upside)
Top 3: get to play against a team that had to play two(?) days prior, as opposed to 4 and 5 having to play each other (medium upside), and get to avoid Wisconsin until the final (small upside)

Committee swapped St. Lawrence with Boston U. (from a strictly pairwise-based seeding), surprisingly, but Cornell still slated to take on the winner of UMD-Sacred Heart

And it's a real bummer that our Regional finals game is at 4. Ending after 6 means you can't get to Colgate for the faceoff.

And that probably means reduced turnout for both.

If the men win on Friday, do I watch all of the women's on Sat, then leave for Colgate?

If the men lose on Friday, do I watch the women and leave in time to catch the men's start?

Decisions, decisions!

How much easier it might be if the women started at 3 or earlier. Then I could get to both.

Heaven knows in the men's NCAAs there are some different start times, arranged so that most games can be watched on TV.

its a big bball weekend.

I would think the women's games are being streamed so TV time isn't an issue

I see mention of ESPN+ for Semi/finals but nothing on the first weekend in the PR.

Having all 4 women's semis on at the same time does not help with building the game? that's a strange schedule

I posted similar thoughts in another thread.

I wonder if we could lobby Cornell to lobby the NCAA to start the women's game at 3:00 instead of at 4:00, to accommodate fans that want to see both in person.

Thanks for the shout - got both games. I'll give general updates on MinnD/SHU but I'll probably mostly watch that for the joy of puck. In my Cornell jersey, of course.

i have to ask, since i think you said you are from europe, which country sparked the joy of hockey (since i always mentally default to continental europe when i hear that but should probably be thinking scandanavia/eastern).

Does "American" mean from a Native American tribe, or rather that they have forgotten where they came from?

Front page of the print Daily Sun is the NCAA Hockey Tournament Supplement, complete with a full page photo of the women's team hoisting the ECAC trophy. Page 2 is all about the women. The guys get their flowers on page 16, next to a playoff preview for the women and a discussion about the history of women's hockey in the NCAA.

Okay so MD just spent the past... 13 minutes bullying SHU up and down the ice, including a SHU PP that looked worse than the Cornell mens' PP, and they just scored. Credit to SHU, they have a LOT of will, but MD just looks significantly better. It's like I'm watching a Sharks game.

MD 19 SOG - 6 SOG SHU. SHU's on the PP again to start period 2 because MD's captain enjoys committing crimes. Not that it matters, given how badly their first PP went.

MD got 3 more this period, including 2 in the last 20 seconds. 34 SOG to 8. That's how this one's going.

As expected, the Bulldogs are the far better team... should be a very tough test for Cornell. If results hold in the other openers, we're looking at 4 ECAC vs. 4 WCHA teams to go to the Frozen Four.

It’s tough to tell against a NEWHA team. Cornell beat the NEWHA champ like 8-0 in the first round last year.

PSU was 31-5 and STL is handling them

Sacred Heart was the 3rd best NEWHA.

The lost to Quin 8-1, RPI 4-0, brown 3-0

Duluth split with Colgate So they will be a good test. Lost to Wisc 5 times which is what you would expect

Wisconsin is like, the superteam right? Ohio too, iirc?

Anyway. MD wins 6-1. 58 SOG to 12. MD's 21 looked to take a bad tumble with a few minutes left, might be injured.

I was able to see the first period and a half and it wasn’t close. But NEHWA teams are not competitive with the top teams in the WCHA and ECAC on most days. That said, yes UMD will be a huge test.

I haven't seen a team dominate another that hard since the first round of the Beanpot. Now, idk whether that means MD is good or SHU is just trash, but Cornell has, from my watching, not really dominated play against an opponent in that fashion maybe ever this year.

UMD is very good, but Sacred Heart is weaker than anyone we’ve played this year. Don’t take too much from it. Last year we similarly dominated our 1st round game against a similar opponent, but then had no answer for Colgate in the quarterfinal.

Alright, gotcha. Perhaps the SHU goalie was giving me shades of Bergmann, but we can't let ourselves be outchanced like we were in several games this season. Gotta get the pucks on net and in. What I will say is MD's goalie seems to like to challenge skaters on the rush - iirc the SHU goal was a 2-woman rush where the goalie stuck to the puck carrier, blocked it, but gave up a juicy rebound on an open net to the other player.
