Earlier than usual official announcement of the incoming players for next season. There will be three freshmen and a transfer (with three years of eligibility) joining in the fall.

F Lindzi Avar and D Rose Dwyer have been known for a few years, and both were on the U.S. under-18 national team. They're bringing in another goalie, too, in Jeanne Lortie, so it looks like they'll go with four goalies again this season (two will be graduating in 2025).

Also coming in is F Delaney Fleming from Ohio State. She didn't score much for the Buckeyes but had good numbers at Shattuck St. Mary's in high school, so will be interesting to see how much she contributes.

The ECAC portion of the schedule has been out for a bit, but it looks like the non-conference games are set, too, based on opponents' posted schedules. (And we'll see about exhibitions.)

Oct. 18 at Mercyhurst
Oct. 19 at Mercyhurst
Oct. 25 vs. Penn State (Ice Breaker Tournament at Ohio State)
Oct. 26 vs. Ohio State or Stonehill (Ice Breaker Tournament at Ohio State)
Nov. 26 vs. RIT
Dec. 31 at RIT
Jan. 14 vs. Syracuse

Cornell picked to finish third in ECAC, behind Clarkson and Colgate. Cornell did receive two first-place votes.
Lily Delianedis named to the preseason All-ECAC team.

All of Mercyhurst's games have been against ranked teams (Colgate, St. Cloud, St, Lawrence), so it was going to be tough for Cornell to open the season against a team that had already played six tough games. (Cornell also didn't play any exhibitions for the first time in many years, though I think they had a had a couple of Ivy scrimmages.)

The Red had 40+ SOG in both games; I didn't have a chance to watch, so not sure if they ran into a hot goalie or if the shots more just more low-quality. If anyone did watch, I'm curious what the lines were.

Here are lines as I saw:

Game 1:

K. Chan - Delianedis - Adam
Prefontaine - Van Gelder - Fleming
Avar - Rud - Jockims
Schiff - Perron-Roy - Yu

Guilday - G. Dwyer
Regalado - Messier
MacEachern - Grober
R. Dwyer

Game 2:

Same except Rory Guilday was out, replaced by Rose Dwyer. Abby Thibodeau replacing Rose Dwyer.

I will post my impressions in a separate note.

Only 1 goal before an empty netter. Strange, considering we should have a sufficient amount of offensive talent. It is early though.

It's not that strange considering the team is still adjusting to the absence of Izzy Daniels, who was the Player of the Year in women's hockey last season.

Cornell continues to struggle getting untracked, losing to Union on Friday, 3-2. Union was voted to finish last in the ECAC preseason poll. The win was Union's first ever at Lynah Rink and only its second win ever over Cornell.

The Red have won 3 in a row after sweeping Yale and Brown on the road, 2-0 and 2-1. Brown’s goal game on a 6x4 late in the third that broke something like a 200-minute shutout streak for Cornell. Pretty good results for Cornell with Rory Guilday and Karel Prefontaine not in the lineup.

This is a team that looks like it’s going to go as far as its defense and goaltending can carry it for now, and hopefully the offense comes along as the season progresses.

I wasn't able to watch any of the games this past weekend. Does anyone know the seriousness of Guilday's injury? Having both her and Prefontaine out of the lineup would explain why we are having so much trouble scoring goals.

Lineups for Brown this past Saturday:

Rud - Van Gelder - Adams
Schiff - Avar - Jockims
C. Chan - Perron-Roy - Yu

R. Dwyer - G. Dwyer
Regalado - Messier
Thibodeau - Grober

Overall, much much improvement in passing and skating last week. I think the lines are starting to gel a lot better and I the passing is becoming a lot more crisp and confident.

This weekend, the bottom two teams in the ECAC (Harvard and Dartmouth) come into Lynah. We should get Guilday back from the Rivalry Series although Derraugh may choose to give her some rest.

Anyone more tied in know what the deal is with Préfontaine and when she is expected back?

Harvard game today!!! :D Assuming fish are not thrown at women's games, correct? Just to check.
Also, is it taboo to try to stream the men's game on my phone while the women are playing? Just to keep an eye on the scoreboard, because that's who everyone talks about...
Anyways, will be one of about twenty (rough guesstimate) spectators at Lynah today, if anyone else is around to shoot the shit. Is it bad I prefer hockey to the fall formal at the law school happening today? Maybe, but eh... am I rambling again? :')

Fleming for slashing. Just saw three guys scamper over to the left side of the penalty box (like, Section C rows 1 and 2) and try to get her attention, breathing on the glass and drawing a heart. Observation from my first game at Lynah this season: The PA system has gotten to the point where it is somehow both too loud and too quiet at the same time. What’s involved in getting the tech that live captions PA announcements on the scoreboard? This is standard at pro arenas and really should be required for accessibility reasons IMO.

4-0 win today for Bergmann’s fifth shutout of the season. Nice to get a better feel for this team seeing it in person. That Chan-Delianedis-Fleming line should get better as they play more games together.

Side note: Eveey season I’m amused by how Derraugh has no qualms at all burning his timeout in a situation like today, up 2-0 with five minutes left in the first. The team did not play great after it went up 2-0, so I guess he wanted to make sure they didn’t give one up there after the icing to let Dartmouth back in it.

I think part of why he used that timeout was it looked like one of the girls (I think 2, maybe 3) got hit by a stinger and needed the breather? Specially cause the refs seemed to want the same line back out.

Cornell rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period on Friday to tie Quinnipiac, 3-3. Cornell had a chance to win the game in OT after Q was called for too many women on the ice, but we couldn't score on the power play. Q had a power play for the final 30 seconds or so.
For what it's worth, Cornell won the shootout, 2-1.
Another tough road game Saturday at 3 in Princeton.

Another big rally today, from down 3-0 at Princeton for a 4-3 win. Delaney Fleming seems to commit some penalties at inopportune times, but Cornell got a lucky break from a mistaken whistle when Princeton was pulling their goalie to make it 6 on 4 late in the third and was able to kill the late penalty.

Cornell definitely had more jump in the second half of the game and got all 4 goals in maybe 9 or 10 minutes, I think? No box score online right now.

Cornell beat RIT, 5-2, Tuesday night. Cornell was ahead 3-0 and completely dominating the game until taking some ill-advised penalties in the second period. RIT scored once on a 5-on-3 advantage and then again on the ensuing 5-on-4 advantage, and all of a sudden it was one-goal game. But Cornell added two power play goals in the third period to seal the game.
Cornell outshot RIT 33-12, and after entering the game having scored only four power-play goals all season, scored three last night. Ashley Messier scored her first two goals of the season, her first goals in over a year.
It's not the ideal schedule for Cornell, which now has over a month off before playing RIT again on New Year's Eve in Rochester. That will be Cornell's final non-league game.

A long winter break is standard for the women’s teams, though Cornell does often play Thanksgiving weekend. In any event, Bergmann, Guilday and Grace Dwyer will be with Team USA for a good chunk of December so I wonder if there was some strategic scheduling.

Also, Cornell still has a game against Syracuse in January. Grady got that wrong during the broadcast yesterday.

The Big Red resume play by beating RIT, 5-1, in the back half of the home-and-home series and will close out 2024 at 9-3-2, with the last loss on Nov. 1. Five goals from five scorers today.

And now a huge stretch of games coming up -- at Clarkson and SLU this weekend, then the home-and-home against Colgate the following weekend. They and Cornell are the top 4 in the ECAC standings.

Cornell outshot RIT 43-17, and had a 43-14 advantage on faceoffs. Hopefully, this dominating performance against a team with a winning record (9-8) will give Cornell some added confidence heading into the upcoming stretch of crucial games.

Cornell ties St. Lawrence, 2-2, but wins the shootout to get the extra half point. A good weekend for the team against two Top Ten teams on the road.
Cornell was dominating play until St. Lawrence got a power play midway through the second period. Cornell failed to clear the puck out of the zone despite having control of the puck with three Cornell player skating toward the blue line. Instead, St. Lawrence was able to keep the puck in and scored a few seconds later. That opened the scoring and Cornell trailed 2-1 after two period, but Georgia Schiff had a beautiful shot to tie the game early in the third period.
After a bit of a slow start this season, Cornell is playing really well, even without a standout player like Izzy Daniel.

There are no points gained for a shootout win for the women. Both teams get 1.5 points for the tie. The shootout win comes into play only for standings tiebreakers.

I propose Calvin Ball for next year's shit shoot outs - men's and women's.

Holy hell, according to the box score, since I didn't feel like paying for FloHockey, Cornell got off 84 shots -- 52 on goal -- against Syracuse in a 6-3 win. Syracuse had gone up 2-0 on a couple PPGs in the first against one of the backup goalies, and then Bergmann came on in the second period and Cornell scored 5 straight across the second and third periods.

The women's team is better than the men's. Has been since the start of the year imo. Wish I could make it to the games this weekend :(

A lot of scoring balance on this team, and I feel like they're still getting better.

Of note, Cornell moves to 6-0 in the Ivies. I didn't look super closely, but I think they have a chance to clinch the Ivy title next weekend.

Katie Chan with some nice moves to get goals in both games this weekend. She's a really good finisher when teammates get her the puck near the goal.

If she's going to play for #6 Cornell, she must be pretty good.

Are any of the current seniors going to be eligible next year due to COVID? It would be really cool to have a legitimate McDavid playing with a legitimate Messier.

I'm pretty sure that many of the current seniors were supposed to enroll in the fall of 2020 but held off, so they will have used up their 4 years of Ivy eligibility after this season. That said, there are very few players listed as incoming freshmen for next fall on the usual recruiting sites, so I'm wondering what's out there that isn't public. It's also an Olympic year next year, so that could make for some interesting situations with the transfer portal as teams look to fill spots of the top-end players.

I got to watch Bobby Orr skate in Lynah. Of course, he wasn't playing a game. He was brought to Ithaca as a promotional thing, and they opened practice so everyone could see him.
