Here's an USCHO article about some "town meeting" where some rather, uhh, interesting possibilities were discussed...

http://uscollegehockey.com/news/2002/04/05_004383.php

This was the passage that caught my attention:

QuoteWhile the WCHA, CCHA, and Hockey East balked at increasing their membership, the MAAC, CHA, and even the 12-team ECAC would be open to new teams.

"Provided we could work out travel partner situations, a team like Syracuse with seem to fit along with our other programs like Cornell and Colgate," said ECAC assistant commissioner Steve Hagwell.
::laugh::

Bring 'em on!!!

Question Hagwell's sanity over the Syracuse comment, if you must...  But, at least he had this to say about the Home of the Big Red:

QuoteHagwell and Bertagna both noted that the schools in the East do not have the new facilities that have been popping up across the Midwest. Few Eastern schools have anything like North Dakota's new Engelstad Arena, with its marble Sioux head. But Hagwell was willing to rate the Cornell crowd at Lynah Rink with any in the nation.

(Of course, that's a no-brainer...  But, still, it's nice to see "in print"...)

More from Bertagna:

Quote"We can't forget the history of our game as coming from small, northern campuses," he said. "Just because there are no Taj Mahals being built [in the East], it is still special on a Saturday night to see the small, older buildings filled for college hockey."

Amen!

Forget Syracuse. A few years ago they cut wrestling, due to money and gender equity. If they can't fund wrestling, they won't fund hockey.

Until I get the html done for this year's archives, you can listen to the Town Meeting at:

Well, cutting wrestling was much more likely a gender issue with the funding bit used as window dressing (I'm speaking NCAA generalities here - I don't know for sure at Syracuse).  But I remember there was an effort on campus within the past few years to upgrade the club team and they barely got so much much as one second of attention from the administration.  Or at least that's what I remember from various HOCKEY-L or forum type sources.  So I doubt there's any chance of orange hockey.

I really appreciate the idea of the town meeting at the F4, even if I've never heard/seen it.  But it's too bad when they say things like this which might give people false hopes.  Then again, better to have a guy talking freely and off the cuff then to have him reading from prepared statements or reciting a bunch of cliches...

but I still love the cozy feeling of Lynah where you can still feel the cold of the ice while standing at the top of the stands :-)

Me Too!:-)  I hope I didn't imply that I dislike Lynah. That is very far from the truth. I love our little rink.

Hockey Man

Their rink is bigger and shinier than ours.  Yay.  How exciting.  Sarcasm ensues.  We made the NCAAs and they didn't.  That's all that matters.  Long live Lynah....but more importantly, keep the NCAA appearances coming!

Keith, the money was a big issue at SU. They even went so far as to tell the team and alums that if they could raise a certain amount of money (I think $2 million) for endowment the would let the team stay. Well it never happened. The idea for upgrading the team started, I think, when they got money for a new rink. However that never had anything to do with a Div. 1 team.

I hope everybody who loves Lynah takes every opportunity to tell the AD and the administration.  Cornell has a habit of dealing with "repair" by following a time-honored procedure: neglect, neglect, neglect, Massive Overbuild.  The Ag and Eng quads are typical examples (the Arts quad is still nice -- than god we don't make money ;-).

I wouldn't want to see a 5000+ seat white elephant and a passified crowd.

re syracuse
there are actually two new rinks in town + another outdoor rink. AND the crunch do have away games...
syracuse just built a new rink themselves right?
in terms of new cornell rink, didnt the university just buy a huge plot of land out past the orchards???
ps
dont forget about destiny. maybe they can add a rink to the mall!
