One of my fondest memories is from '85 when we lost a close one to eventual national champion RPI. The crowd seranaded portly RPI coach Mike Addessa with chants of "the coach is fat", and the RPI fans were taunted with "you live in Troy".

Quote from: Jeff Hopkins '82Most of my favorite memories at Lynah were associated with taunts of individual players, such as Princeton's Ray "Bozo" Casey or Clarkson's Brian "Beaver" Cleaver.  It the admin has truly outlawed that kind of interplay, and I have no proof that they have other than the hearsay on this board, then they've destroyed the Lynah experience for the students as least as I recall it.
My favorite is still when we had Ryan Smart and Dartmouth had some poor guy named Dumas.  "Smart!  Dumas!" was the order of the day.

O.K., I give......
Living in BhumFaq, Egypt I had no idea how restrictive it had/has become.
The sheep thing notwithstanding, no telephone cheer!? What!!??
I guess I side with the students!!
Booooring!!!!

Telephone cheer is still going on, too. Clearly audible (somewhat) on ILDN for the Clarkson game.

Would really be a shame if we lost what makes Lynah so great.

Thanks, now let's see if we can get him to come.

Can't say I've ever seen a price cut on Lynah tickets for a non-break game, but here we are.

Interesting to revisit some of these old threads. I think fan attendance and energy is clearly not as good as it was 15 years ago, but at least it's mostly plateaued over the past 10 years.

My general thoughts
—winning doesn't have much of an effect on attendance. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between the two. I can imagine that, if you're a marginal fan, Cornell winning the game you attend will make you more likely to come back. But 99% of
students on the fence about buying tickets have literally no idea what Cornell's record was the prior season.
—cancelling the 2020-21 season hurt cheer cohesion. Not sure how to remedy this. Most of the old cheers are lost on the student body at this point.  I'm not sure how this affects fan energy on the whole. The "Fuck you Harvard" chants, while not very creative, were plenty lively this season.
—being able to watch decent-quality streams of the games probably has an overall neutral effect. While an alum considering traveling back to campus to catch a game in-person may instead be content to watch online, the fact it is now so easy to watch fosters fan interest and engagement. Fans can now follow the team much more closely.
—relatedly, the Cornell athletics/hockey social media team has done a solid job fostering engagement and keeping the hockey team at the top of people's minds. Pretty much every student has an Instagram, and regular posting by the hockey account keeps the team at the forefront of kids' minds (so long as they're "following" the account on Instagram).
—I still believe ticket pricing is the only variable over which the program exerts real control and which directly affects attendance. Cheaper tickets—>more fans (especially along students). $300 season tickets is a no-go for most kids. Though, it's possible $200 tickets wouldn't move the needle, and cost-conscious people are only buying single-game tickets anyway.

I'd be curious to hear the thoughts of Ithaca dwellers on here, especially current students (if any), regarding whether there exists a buzz about the hockey team on campus and how people view the hockey team and attending games in person.

Compared to 20 yrs ago where I could find 25 people who wanted tickets when I couldnt go, I cant give them away anymore and haven't for a good 7-10 yrs.

CAS

Cornell reported for the 2023-4 season an average attendance of 4,178, or 98% of capacity.  I presume this is the number of tickets sold, not actual attendance at games.  The attendance was the highest in the ECAC

From Section M, across from the Cornell bench, we saw way more than 2% empty seats. Unless a lot of fans aree going to the bathroom with cocaine frequency. Someday there'll be an iPhone app that pans the crowd, counts people, and makes attendance counts more accurate.

This is from like a week ago but student season tickets in B and C sold out for the first time in over 10 years.

Nice. Let's hope they also start arriving earlier, as in by the opening faceoff, for the first time in over ten years.

Yeah, I'm not gonna hold my breath on that.
Is next year here yet?

I think the only way to ensure that would be to do what the nfl does and advertise a 7:00 start time but actually start at 7:15 or so. I'm very content with season tickets being sold out though so I'm certainly not gonna grouse about when people show up before anything happens.
